Solving real world problems is the Esri way, and ArcGIS Indoors embodies it!

Read a great advocacy StoryMap by the Michigan State University to solve some very real, every day problems they faced when navigating around campus, which can be daunting for anyone new to campus and even for campus veterans.

MSU had been doing GIS outside the building for years.

Conversations now needed to happen about referencing and exploring how they could extend the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) inside the building!

ArcGIS Pro 2.7 includes a new map template and a collection of editing rules that support the manual digitization, editing, and maintenance of indoor data in the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model. These new tools allow you to quickly and easily modify existing features quickly and easil or create new features without manually populating each attribute field. When you create a new feature and provide its spatial location and vertical order (which defines the level on which the feature is located), the attribute rules calculate the remaining attributes required by the Indoors model.

Using both the map template and attribute rules you can, for example:

  • Create a new unit feature by drawing a polygon on the map and providing the Use Type, Name, and Vertical Order. All other mandatory attributes are calculated by attribute rules and a hole is automatically generated in the existing Units feature data as needed.
  • Update the name of a facility in the Facilities feature class and have the FACILITY_NAME attribute automatically update throughout your indoor dataset for features that are located within that facility.

Prior to ArcGIS Pro 2.6, ArcGIS Indoors stored category information in a standalone table within your Indoors geodatabase. Now, with ArcGIS Pro 2.6, you can create, configure, and manage Indoors categories for your maps right in ArcGIS Pro.

If you started using ArcGIS Indoors at ArcGIS Pro 2.4 or 2.5, you can upgrade your Indoors geodatabase to take advantage of the new Configure Indoors Categories tool and new capabilities of ArcGIS Pro 2.6. The ArcGIS Indoors team at Esri has provided tools to help automate the upgrade process.

  1. Download the resource ZIP below and extract it to its own folder.
  2. In ArcGIS Pro ribbon, click the Insert tab.
  3. In the Project section, click Toolbox > Add Toolbox.
  4. Browse to the folder mentioned in step 1. In the tools subfolder, select indoors-pro-2_6-upgrade-tools.pyt, then click OK.
  5. In the Catalog pane, expand the new toolbox and use the tools in order:

  1. First, use the Upgrade Indoors Database tool to automatically update your Indoors geodatabase schema.
  2. Then, use the Upgrade Indoors Categories tool to migrate category information from the Categories table directly into your maps.

The resource ZIP includes an 01-read-me-first.pdf with details on each tool.

You can download the resource ZIP here:
