@K_Jueckstock - In StoryMaps, that navigation bar is intended only to link within the story. If your client needs a navbar that links to other locations on the web, you might need a tool that is more of a website builder such as ArcGIS Hub or Experience Builder. I believe those tools may offer this ability.

@TimothyHoeflich - Wow, great story! I reviewed it and I really don't see anything that required the use of HTML, so I'm still a little confused why you chose to author it that way.Part of the appeal of both the classic Esri Story Maps templates and the new ArcGIS StoryMaps is that you can create engaging web content with an interactive, easy-to-use builder rather than needing to use code. Either way, it's an impressive piece of work!! Regardless of how the story was originally created, I see no reason why you could not recreate it in ArcGIS StoryMaps. You could A) manually bring over all the content, which would involve copying/pasting chunks of regular text (not HTML) and re-uploading the images, or you could B) use the conversion helper tool mentioned above. I would use this as an opportunity to think about how you organize the story as a whole. One way to do it would be to create a single long story and use the story navigation feature to add chapter links across the top, like in this story: Coastal Flooding (arcgis.com) But I also might recommend thinking about whether it would be better to divide the story into a 3-4 major parts. Each of those parts could be individual stories (they could have chapter links too) and you could group the stories in a collection. Here's an example of this technique: The Deep (arcgis.com) Here's more info about using a collection: Start your first ArcGIS StoryMaps collection (esri.com)

Hello @TimHoeflich1 - Thanks for sharing your feedback on this topic. When we built ArcGIS StoryMaps we looked to provide more storytelling capabilities, a higher level of security, and make it easier to do many things that required special coding skills in the classic templates. There are now lots of things you can do with the builders that you needed code for in the past. It would be great if you could provide more information about what you did in your classic story that required using HTML. Could you share some details? At this time, using HTML code inside a story is not supported. This is something that may come in the future, but currently you can use one of the available themes or make your own custom theme selecting from over 1000 fonts, using your own colors, and choosing from different style options. You can also use our classic conversion helper to assist the process of migrating your text and media to ArcGIS StoryMaps. Try the Classic Story Conversion Helper - Esri Community We also have several helpful articles that provide tips and guidance for migrating. Recreating a classic story with ArcGIS StoryMaps (esri.com) Moving to ArcGIS StoryMaps Mimicking the classic templates in ArcGIS StoryMaps (esri.com) The screenshot you've shared is a code block. The purpose of a code block is to include code snippets as part of your story. For example, you have a short Python script or Arcade express you want to share with your readers. Check out this story as an example of how the code block is used: Spike Maps (arcgis.com)

I'm sorry, we don't know. I would think the work the Dashboard team did would allow file downloads in other embedded scenarios outside of StoryMaps. It would be good to check with those teams if you are seeing an issue with that combination of apps.

@SaraJL - No worries, and sorry about the back and forth. I understand it is not always clear where to post things, but the main things is that it's good you are getting the conversation started somewhere! Once we dig into an issue, it sometimes becomes clear that a different audience is needed to hear and implement the suggestion, and I think that's the case here. This is essentially an idea to improve the core ArcGIS sign in experience that ArcGIS Online and other apps use to help new users understand they are part of an org and prevent signing in or creating new accounts. ----- One other note is that you should be sure to tell people to check the "Remember this URL" box when signing in. This is how you can store the context of your organization on your computer. (This isn't a complete solution since it doesn't apply across different computers and still falls under user education, but it is something you can try to do now if you're not already.) So if a user who has done this navigates directly to another ArcGIS app, like StoryMaps, when they sign in they'll be prompted to click their org name (in my case the org name is "Story") to get their org-specific login options. After clicking that button, you'll see only the sign-in options your org has enabled. You can see below in my org we have a SAML/Okta login option and no social logins available.

> Why not redesign the system to match user expectations and be more intuitive? Other than users with public-only accounts, aren't users tied to an organization? Perhaps the user experience could treat organization-centric access as the primary mode of operation? This is an interesting idea! However, to get any traction, I would recommend posting it to the ArcGIS Online ideas board since it is the platform's sign-in experience that would need to be changed. Any changes implemented there could then be picked up by individual apps. > Perhaps single-purpose sites, like storymaps.arcgis.com could also be eliminated... More discussion on the idea of consolidating ArcGIS app sites is on this thread... Consolidate Story Maps into ArcGIS Online - Esri Community

@PeterKnoop @SaraJL Thank you for these thoughtful comments. I certainly understand and acknowledge the situation you describe. Our intent is never to create more work or confusion because of our internal organization or development team practices, and we appreciate you raising some of the workflow difficulties you've encountered! The solution prescribed here (consolidating into ArcGIS Online the StoryMaps site -- and potentially other similarly architected ArcGIS app sites like Hub, Experience Builder, Insights, Survey123, Urban, Business/Community Analyst, GeoPlanner, and more), however, is an enormous amount of effort (even for just one of those teams) and would eliminate many tangible benefits in terms of performance, frequent/flexible releases, improved SEO, and many other features. So while I'm not sure that suggestion is the best place to start, we're very interested in thinking about how we can address some of the usability issues that you've identified. From my team's perspective, we'd like to understand more about specific pain points using StoryMaps (like the multiple BACK arrows, creating StoryMaps from the ArcGIS Content page, etc.) so we can look into addressing them. From a larger perspective, true consolidation is a complex issue that involves many parts of ArcGIS. It may be helpful to discuss it, as well as specific workflow issues, at our annual education group meeting at UC with some members of the core ArcGIS Online team and possibly other app teams. WDYT?

Hi @SaraJL -- I understand the confusion you describe; however, I'm not sure what can be done about this beyond trying to educate your users. The issue you describe is not an issue with the StoryMaps site, it's the expected behavior for any entry point into ArcGIS. If you do a web search for ArcGIS Online, arcgis.com, Survey123, Experience Builder, or any number of other ArcGIS apps; go to one of those pages; and click Sign In you'll get the standard ArcGIS Online login experience. This is because when anyone initially comes to ArcGIS or any of its apps, the site doesn't know what organization they are in. If the site doesn't know what org they are in, they can't be presented with customized login options. The admin setting you are referring to only affects your organization's specific login page. That means someone would have to go to https://[myorgname].maps.arcgis.com to see those customized options. If someone comes to the ArcGIS Online login page from anywhere else they'll necessarily see the generic login options. If there is another workflow or ArcGIS app where you see these customized options working as you expect, please let me know so we can look into it!

@BJones1 - There is not currently a way to disable/hide the standard themes, but you can use the feature called Approved themes to promote specific themes to organization members. For more information, see Managing approved StoryMap themes for your organization (esri.com) P.S. I moved this comment to a new thread since it was a different idea than the one on the thread where it was originally posted.
