ArcGIS Experience Builder allows you to create responsive web apps using a wide variety of widgets that can interact with one another. With the latest update of Experience Builder and ArcGIS Business Analyst, you can now also include the Business Analyst widget in your web experiences. The Business Analyst widget gives app authors the ability to include infographics that display demographics, Tapestry segments, market potential, and business information specific to a location. Since there is so much customization possible with Experience Builder, it can sometimes be time-consuming to create a well-designed app. Thankfully, Experience Builder has a large template gallery to kick start the process of creating experiences – now, with Business Analyst curated templates. What are templates? Templates are pre-configured layouts and experiences that you can modify to meet your exact requirements. Experience Builder provides a variety of default preset layouts as templates, allowing you to drag and drop widgets into the layout. Other templates are pre-configured experiences with widgets and interactions already set up that are shared with you. The Business Analyst team has created several pre-configured templates designed to highlight the Business Analyst infographics. How do I find the templates? You can find the curated Business Analyst templates when you create a new web experience. Here’s how: Open ArcGIS Experience Builder from your ArcGIS Online organization. Click + Create new. On the Select a template to start page, click the ArcGIS Online tab. In the search field, type Business Analyst or Community Analyst. There you have it – all the curated templates, ready to be used and customized. For any template, you can use the Preview button to launch the web experience so you can see how it’s designed, test the widget interactions, and decide if it’s the best one for you. Each template includes a window that appears on launch with some information on the template, including which mode it’s using (Workflow or Preset), the intended use of the app, and the specific configuration of the widgets used. I’ve picked a template – now what? Now you make it yours! Once you have chosen the best template for your web experience, you can customize it with your own data and theming – or just leave it as is. As an example, if you wanted to create your own “What’s in My Community” web experience, you can click Create on that template, and you will be taken to the builder. From there, you can leave everything as is or make any changes you want. I suggest at least removing the window that pops up with the template information. Before you do, note the valuable information included. You can remove the window by going to the Window tab in the Page pane and choosing Delete from the Window options menu. Now, maybe like me, you live in Canada and want to use this application for finding what’s within a 15-minute walk time in your Canadian community. Since the What’s in My Community infographic is also available in Canada, you can change the Business Analyst widget’s location and infographics settings to reflect this. Select the Business Analyst widget to open its configuration options. In the Location settings section, choose Canada from the Country or region drop-down menu. Optionally, you can choose a default location for the infographic. In the Infographics section, choose What’s in My Community. Now this same template is set up to be a web experience tailored for Canadian communities. Note that not every infographic is available for every country. Since the infographic is connected to the map widget (where users can search for a location), you should also change the initial view of the map to reflect your new area. You can also do things like change the app’s theme, text font, or even add more widgets. When you’re happy with the web experience, click Save and then click Publish. The What’s in My Community template is now your own custom web experience that you can share with others. What templates are available? As of now, we have a curated set of 12 templates for you to choose from. They include: Demographic Summary of Arizona Counties Key Demographic with Map (light) What’s in My Community City wide demographic and health analysis Key Demographic Facts with Map Population Trends report Demographic and Spending Dashboard Analyze existing businesses using infographics Learning about LA metropolitan using infographics Explore your community using infographics Health Care and Insurance Analysis Community Profile and Superfund sites We are always continuing to build and curate new templates and infographics – so expect to see more ready-to-use templates for your next experience.

After several updates of ArcGIS Dashboards, the time has come for ArcGIS Dashboards Classic to retire. For ArcGIS Online users, ArcGIS Dashboards Classic is currently in mature support and with the Fall 2022 update, it will be officially retired. For ArcGIS Enterprise users, ArcGIS Dashboards Classic is set to be retired in ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0. We have already put out an announcement with some key information about the retirement and what you need to know. As the retirement party draws closer, we thought we would put out another reminder to upgrade your dashboards and provide some details on how you can do that and what to look out for. What do I need to do to prepare? We have made this transition as smooth as possible for you. Wherever possible, the Dashboards team has ensured dashboards authored in ArcGIS Dashboard Classic continue to just work in ArcGIS Dashboards. If your dashboards were last updated in ArcGIS Dashboards Classic, we strongly recommend you check them and their data sources before upgrading. If you are logged in to your organization, you can use the search to find dashboards that have not been upgraded. In the search field, enter the following: type:dashboard typekeywords:'Operations Dashboard' -typekeywords:'ArcGIS Dashboards' The team has done a lot of testing to ensure that dashboards upgrade smoothly, however, since upgrading a dashboard is permanent, taking the time to verify functionality is important. We recommend doing the following: Open your dashboard in ArcGIS Dashboards Classic and save it. If your dashboard was created or last edited in an older update of ArcGIS Dashboards Classic, this will make sure any updates to the classic application since your last edits have been applied. In Map Viewer (not Map Viewer Classic), open your dashboard’s web maps and standalone layers. Ensure that everything displays correctly and make sure that all layers that are used in your dashboard are set as visible. Save any changes you make. Open the dashboard for editing in ArcGIS Dashboards. Verify that your dashboard is working as expected (see the checklist below). Save your dashboard. Once you save your dashboard, it is permanently upgraded. If you encounter issues when upgrading your dashboards, you can reach out to Esri Technical Support for assistance. If you are an ArcGIS Enterprise user and you want to continue using ArcGIS Dashboards Classic – you still can. As long as your enterprise remains on a version that supports it (10.9.1 or earlier), ArcGIS Dashboards Classic will still be available to you. Since there have been a few changes over the last few versions, the classic version of Dashboards is named any of the following: ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 – ArcGIS Dashboards Classic ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8.1 and 10.9 – ArcGIS Dashboards ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8 and earlier – Operations Dashboard ArcGIS Dashboards upgrading checklist The following checklist includes some key areas in your dashboard you should verify before upgrading as you might notice changes. Follow feature action ArcGIS Dashboards no longer supports the follow feature action. If your dashboard included this action, it will no longer be shown in the action configuration and if a user makes a selection on the action’s source, no action will occur. If your dashboard requires the follow feature action and you are using ArcGIS Enterprise, we recommend remaining on a version of Enterprise that supports it (10.9.1 or earlier) until your dashboards can be modified. Map element visibility Make sure any map elements on your dashboard are sized to a visible height and width (height and width greater than 0%). This is especially true if your other elements are powered by the map’s operational layers. If your map is not a visible size, the elements that are powered by the map’s layers will have data source errors. If you want your map hidden, you can stack it behind another element on your dashboard. Indicator percent symbol If you have indicators on your dashboard that display values as a percentage, verify that they are displaying as you want them to. In ArcGIS Dashboards, a percent symbol (%) is automatically added to the indicator value if you are using a percent value, so if you manually added one previously, there will be an extra symbol. Indicator configuration in ArcGIS Dashboards Classic (left) and indicator configuration in ArcGIS Dashboards (right) To resolve this, open the indicator configuration and remove the % symbol from the value prefix/suffix field. Map service tables Using a map service table as a standalone data source is a known limit in ArcGIS Dashboards. If you need to use a map service table as a data source, add it to a map first and add that map to the dashboard. You can then select the table from the map’s layers as a data source. Embedded PDFs The built in PDF plugins for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge no longer allow PDFs embedded into your dashboard to display when viewed in those browsers. If you are embedding PDFs, ensure that dashboard viewers open the dashboard for viewing in Firefox or use a browser plug-in. Pop-up attachments If your dashboard has a details element that is displaying a pop-up that includes attachments – verify that your attachments are displaying properly. If your attachments are not displaying, open your map in Map Viewer and in the pop-ups pane, ensure that attachments are set to display as Auto or Gallery. Learn more about how attachments are expected to display in pop-ups. List element selection For lists in ArcGIS Dashboards Classic, the selection color renders as the entire background of the list item. As an author, you may have configured your selection color a darker color and then configured your selection text color to a lighter one so that the text is visible when a selection is made (as shown below). In ArcGIS Dashboards, the selection color now renders as a bar on the side of the list item instead. This means if you have configured your list selection colors similar to the above, your text might become difficult to read when a selection is made. Double check that your list selection colors are configured as you intended and make any necessary changes. Stream layers If you configure a stream layer with track history rendering (currently requiring Map Viewer Classic), the track history does not display in ArcGIS Dashboards. This is currently a known limit. If your dashboard depends on stream layers with track history as data sources, and you are using ArcGIS Enterprise, we recommend remaining on a version of Enterprise that supports it (10.9.1 or earlier) until support is added. Next steps There are multiple resources available to help you get going with ArcGIS Dashboards. Read the help documentation and past blogs to find more information. You can also visit the ArcGIS Dashboards product page and explore the Dashboards gallery for inspiration.

In ArcGIS Dashboards, the details element and any pop-ups in the map element are based on how your pop-up is configured in Map Viewer. Depending on the display settings of attachments in your pop-up, your attachments may display as a list (attachments show as links) or as a gallery (the whole attachment is displayed). New maps authored in Map Viewer and stand-alone layers are set to Auto by default. Auto allows the app to choose the best experience for the attachment. For Dashboards, this means that your attachments will display as if they were in Gallery mode. If your attachments are not displaying correctly on your dashboard, verify that they are set up correctly. Open your map in Map Viewer and in the pop-ups pane, check that attachments are set to display as Auto or Gallery. Pop-up configuration pane If you are in an ArcGIS Enterprise environment, depending on the version you are using, you may be restricted in how your attachments display. Server-based layers and hosted feature layers from previous versions of ArcGIS Enterprise (10.9 and earlier) can only display attachments as a list. This means that on your dashboard, your attachments will always display as links. When you open your layer in Map Viewer, you will see the following message. Pop-up attachment options Starting at ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1, hosted feature layers can display attachments as a list or a gallery. As you begin to upgrade your dashboards from ArcGIS Dashboards Classic to ArcGIS Dashboards, take the time to verify your pop-ups and ensure they are displaying as expected. If your dashboards were last updated in ArcGIS Dashboards Classic, we also strongly recommend you check them and their data sources before upgrading. The team has done a lot of testing to ensure that dashboards upgrade smoothly, however, since upgrading a dashboard is permanent, taking the time to verify functionality is important. We recommend always doing the following: In Map Viewer (not Map Viewer Classic), open your dashboard’s web maps and standalone layers. Ensure that everything displays correctly and make sure that all layers that are used in your dashboard are visible. Save any changes you make. Open the dashboard for editing in ArcGIS Dashboards. Verify that your dashboard is working as expected. Save your dashboard.

In ArcGIS Dashboards, you can now allow dashboard users to download the data that is powering your visualizations. The data downloaded from a visualization respects all filters that have been applied to it. For spatial filters, there are some things to keep in mind before downloading data. When a spatial filter is applied to an element, the returned query in the visualization includes features within the selected geometry. However, the downloaded CSV will include any features that intersect with the entire extent of the selected geometry. See below for an example of how it works. The selector above is filtering for features within the yellow polygon. The list and indicator are filtered and are showing the one feature in the polygon. When data is downloaded from either of the elements, the resulting CSV also includes features outside of the polygon’s geometry. These features are in the polygon’s entire extent. To limit the features downloaded, you can use an attribute field filter instead of a spatial filter. Learn more about filtering by attribute fields.

The previous release of ArcGIS Dashboards brought forth the new ArcGIS Dashboards (formerly ArcGIS Dashboards Beta). In this latest release of ArcGIS Dashboards, we have added in a few improvements to make your dashboards even better. Here’s some of the things you’ll notice when you next open your dashboards. New selectors A big part of interactive dashboards are selectors. Adding selectors to your dashboard is a great way to allow users to interact with the data and trigger actions on other elements. In the latest release of Dashboards, selectors have been redesigned and have a fresh new look. On top of their sleek new look, there are also some new configuration options to look out for, including: The option to choose a presentation mode for your selectors to better display them on your dashboard. The ability to add icons to your selectors to make them more distinguishable. New configuration options, including the option to allow users to clear their selector inputs and view their selections in category selectors. Learn more about the new enhancements for selectors. Improved header design As an extension of the new selectors update, the header element has gotten an update as well. The dashboard header element still has two distinct sizes, small and large, however, you will no longer see an option for choosing the size. Instead, the size of the header is automatically determined by its contents. For example, if your header includes a subtitle placed in the same line as the title, the header size is small. If the subtitle is placed below the title, the header size is large. When a header includes a logo, the logo size determines the header size. Headers that include at least one selector are always large. Another change you will notice with the header element is the application of the background setting. To help with visibility, selectors in the header element are no longer transparent. Instead, selectors in the header will use either the element background color (set in your dashboard settings), or the background color set in the header’s configuration. If your header is using a background image, the image will not span into the selector. This allows selectors to remain visible when background images are used. Summary These latest enhancements are all now available, along with some back-end work done to improve dashboard performance. Create your first dashboard or open your existing dashboards to start using these new enhancements! You can find our team at the upcoming Esri UC and learn more about creating effective dashboards with ArcGIS Dashboards in our technical workshop. Register today! As always, we love seeing the dashboards you make. Share them with us on Twitter and LinkedIn using #ArcGISDashboards.
