Hi @JonathanMurphy2 and @JoHeOEAV - I created another post on this issue: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-dashboards-questions/problems-with-category-labels-in-arcgis-dashboards/m-p/1711273#M12059 Through a bit of investigation, I realized that the issue seems to be related to the fact that even though the load categories option displays the label value, the dashboard is using the coded value to decide how to apply the custom text. This may sound a bit confusing, but hopefully the other post explains things pretty well. In one case I used the code value by adding an override item, and it worked just fine. However, even though this approach worked to solve my specific problem on one dashboard, this is obviously less than ideal. It seems that there's an underlying coding error that needs to be fixed.

@StephanieW - I was able to figure out the reason that the label text in this dashboard (https://epa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/ac7397d07f66410bb39890ce8d791512#) was not working as it should. When clicking on Load categories (now and before the update), the category label options that populate were/are drawn from the Label (displayed value) of that field in the data layer (Approve for public release? field in https://unhcoopext.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=4c31038c1a00490e807ad59ec79a0ed7&dataTabView=fields#data). However, after the update, the dashboard seems to be referencing the Code (stored value) when determining how to apply the custom text in the category labels, not the Label (displayed value) as it had done previously. I fixed the issue by using the +Override option to add a new category which reflects the Code (yes) instead of relying on the Label (Yes) that was loaded by the dashboard when I used the Load categories button. The dashboard now appropriately displays the text I want it to in the location it should. The problem is now fixed in this dashboard (which is great) and I'm now in the process of trying to figure out if a similar approach will fix similar issues in other dashboards. However, this is still a problem that needs to / should be fixed with the code base of ArcGIS Dashboards. If Load categories presents you with options based on the Label, it should apply the text based on the label. If it needs to use the code value, that is what it should present at the option. (Hi @MartinCopping - thought I'd bring this thread to your attention, since others may be having similar issues...)

Thanks @StephanieW. I may wind up doing that in the end. However, the issue is not isolated to just this dashboard. Similar things are happening in other dashboards as well (with completely unrelated data). Another dashboard I built years ago (inside a different Org) is experiencing a similar situation. https://unhcoopext.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/fa3bd81fb20442c6842483a223df7a2f# The label text is not being respected, in this case in only one of several bars on a graph. In this case, the custom series color is not being respected as well. Neither of these things were true before the recent update. So... seems more like a pervasive issue with the new version of ArcGIS Dashboards rather than with something specific to my configuration settings. However, I could still submit a ticket if it would be helpful to communicate the idea to the right people.

Got it @SandraLuken1! Thanks so much. I use custom themes all the time, but I hadn't looked for any new options that were available. Having that option will solve the situation most of the times, but sometimes it won't. If a dashboard features elements with different foreground colors (most of my dashboards do), only one color can be chosen for the icons. Knowing that option exists is great, but I think it would be good to also let users set that for each element like you do for many other colors. Thanks again for your response!

I frequently use category labels in my ArcGIS Dashboards and it seems that the June 2026 update has created a situation where some of those labels are ignored. In this dashboard https://epa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/ac7397d07f66410bb39890ce8d791512 I have two similar tables (they are single field, single record, so they look like one cell) that are set up in the exact same way as each other, one using the delta field of this data layer (A - https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=0c0090b13a404d018bd883064bc11ef2#overview) the other uses the Approve for public release? field of this data layer (B - https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=4c31038c1a00490e807ad59ec79a0ed7#overview). The recent update caused the discrepancy, since both tables were acting the same up until late last week. I also used to have category selectors in this dashboard (got rid of them due to different dynamics introduced by the new update) and the same exact thing happened to them - the selector based on layer A continued to respect the label I entered, while the selector based on layer B did not. I'm not sure why one is respected and the other isn't. I tried recreating the table and it didn't see to have any effect. Perhaps there is something I can tweak to fix the problem, but It seems like perhaps I have to wait until there is an update. If that's the case, I definitely need to redesign the dashboard. Looking for any idea out there about a fix - thanks in advance!

I agree 100% @KenBouchard! The effect on my layouts of the additional icon is not great, particularly when I have many elements which go blank intentionally when no selection has been applied to another element (they now have random "i" icons floating in the middle). I have been trying to figure out how to control the color of that icon to have it disappear into the background, but I have not yet been able to find a way to do so.

Thanks so much (as always) @OwenGeo! The info you provided above was what I suspected, but it was great to hear this from you directly. I sent this info along to the person in our organization who was worried about losing web traffic if we created a new ArcGIS StoryMap using the NRI content current housed at the link above. I suppose you can already guess which side of that argument I came down on regarding the usefulness of the info as housed on the current webpages vs. housing that same content in an ArcGIS StoryMap (expanded and improved, with lots of maps of course). Thanks again! Shane

Can anyone provide information regarding what part of an ArcGIS StoryMap is indexed by search engines? For example, is it the title, the info on the "card", and the first bit of content at the top of the page? Or is the ArcGIS Storymap indexed by the search engine? (even the REALLY LONG ones..?) I'm trying to get my head around how to make content in and ArcGIS StoryMap as discoverable as possible, particularly in comparison to how similar content would be indexed if housed on a number of different webpages on a website (for example - https://extension.unh.edu/nhnriguide). Thanks so much in advance for any info people can share. Shane PS: I imagine this might come across your desk at some point @OwenGeo, so I went ahead tagged you and help the process along!

Hi @elpinguino! I'm not sure that this will help with the order of the fields, but you could potentially control which fields are found in the download for that element by creating a layer view to use for the data source for that specific element. You would need to have enough fields visible that you are able to make any connections (I'm thinking about actions) to other elements, but it would give you the ability to potentially remove some excess fields from the downloaded file.

This is a great tip @JenniferAcunto! I almost never used tables in my dashboards until I figured out this potential use. It certainly gets around the lack of a "grouped values" (or display distinct) option in the list element. I used it for the first time in the NH Seafood Finder dashboard (the list of locations and type of seafood available once you choose a location) and have continued using it in many dashboards since.

Unfortunately @KimberlyK, I'm still stuck. I'm certainly not happy to hear you are running into the same roadblock, but at least I know that I'm not alone! I find this issue to be THE primary limitation I have encountered in ArcGIS Dashboards and I really wish they would change this capability. I've posted this issue in several places in the Esri community and, so far, there has been clear best approach to solve this problem. I keep hoping that I can find a way to get the right person is Esri to understand this issue, and that once they do, they can make the necessary changes to eliminate this limitation. To some people this may seem like a problem only in the case of large and/or complex datasets, but that is not the case in my opinion. I have come up with ways around it when datasets and number of options are limited by making somewhat ridiculous data tables (for example, when creating this https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/cc8b79af0b754e2bab77522d4bc53df7), but that workaround is awkward and certainly not scalable.

I still think this is a good idea and have some specific, tangible use cases (which I would be happy to describe, if/when it would be helpful). Fingers crosses that this comes to pass at some point! Cheers, Shane

When an ArcGIS Dashboard element uses Categories from > Grouped values for data options, the source field menu is unable to be changed (it's grayed out) when referencing elements in the Dashboard driven by different data layers (for example, a different hosted table). However, the source field menu is able to be modified if the same data is used in an element which uses Categories from > Features. The result of this situation is that when using the Grouped values setting, the ability of element A to influence the element B is very limited if the element B is driven by a different dataset than element A. This is the case even if the two data sets have a field in common (different than the field used to display data in element A) which could be used to drive the action of element B, since the source field menu can not be modified to allow the action to use compatible fields in the two different datasets. The Grouped values option used to be more limited in the past regarding the types of map actions it could drive (like zoom, pan, and flash), but that limitation has since (happily) been removed. I'm hoping that a similar advance takes place for the ability to alter the source field when using this setting.
