Hi Stephanie, sounds like this happened because you were referencing these photos in Flickr but then removed them from Flickr. https://community.esri.com/thread/223162-journal-help-852-images-disappeared

Hi Samantha Sorry about the issue. We didn't resolve this issue so far but I am hoping the workarounds above that Kate mentioned can help authors fix this if they have it. The links in your story are working OK for me at the moment. Rupert

You can download the source code and try and do that as a customization. See the If You're A Developer section at the end of our Resources page for an overview of this: Resources | Story Maps . I'm not sure however how much work would be involved in doing that, or whether that particular customization is possible. In general I think I'd push back a bit on this enhancement and say that if you have a block of text that is so large that you'd prefer not to show it all at once, it would be better to simply reduce or edit down the amount of text instead, or restructure your story so that you can break that long text into smaller sections. Or at least, I don't think it would be worth trying to customize the app just to provide this specific text handing. Rupert

If the story can't be shared publicly, then readers will need an ArcGIS account so their identities can be validated. If they have accounts in your organization you can just share the story with that Org and they will be able to see it. Other members of that Org will also be able to view them. You could restrict viewing inside your Org further by creating a group, sharing the story into that group and choosing who in the Org can view that group. You can also use a group to share your story with people who are signed to other Orgs. The above sharing methods require Org subscription accounts. Public accounts (ie. free non-commercial use) accounts can view publicly shared stories but can't participate in Orgs or groups. (If you are using a Public account, a very low budget and definitely not recommended way to share a story map you create with just a few people you trust would be to give them your account credentials so they can log in as you to view it, but of course they could intentionally or unintentionally delete or modify your work, or start making their own cool story maps with your account, or forward your credentials on to someone else who isn't trusted).

Hi Deborah Sorry about the issue. I have seen this now and then with some images and it is indeed super frustrating when it happens, especially as I've not been able to figure out why this happens. I don't think this is specific to Story Maps. For example I've had people email me a pic taken with an iPhone that ends up sideways if I save it and then forward it in an Outlook email. I think it is some odd internal metadata thing about the actual file itself. My workaround is to create a new image file by taking a screenshot of the errant image the correct way up, rather than try and modify/edit the original file. Rupert

Hi Kenneth We don't support expanding a block of text specifically. Like you say you can do a hyperlink to an external web page. You could add a Story Map action into the text that jumps readers to another section in your Story Map Journal or Story Map Series. So for example you could create another section in your Story Map that goes into a topic in more detail, and then allow readers to jump directly to that section if they want to find out more. Rupert

Thanks Scott and Megan. Can I also confirm the behavior you are seeing when it doesn't work: in a Story Map Tour there is always one tour point currently selected (it's point marker symbol is shown larger on the map than the other points). Are you finding that you can't drag that marker to a new location? Note that Map Tour doesn't let you click on the map to specify the new location for the currently selected tour point: you have to drag that point to a new location to relocate it. It also won't let you drag a different marker to new location: it only lets you drag the currently selected marker to a new location. Does any message appear in the Map Tour Builder when it doesn't work? Also if you open the Console for your browser (i.e in Chrome press F12) do you see any errors listed when this doesn't work? I don't know what is causing this issue but here are a couple of other things to try. It would be good to eliminate if this is something to do with the particular map you are using in your Map Tour, such as the basemap, the specific spatial extent it is using, or any Organization wide geocoding locators defined in your ArcGIS Online Organization's Admin settings.I t would be good to check on a machine on which you get this issue, do you get the same issue if you create a new Map Tour using a different basemap and extent? And it would be good to check if you get the same issue if you sign in to ArcGIS Online using a Public Account instead of an Organizational account to see that if that eliminates the issue. - If you are using ArcGIS Enterprise (as opposed to ArcGIS Online) there may be an issue in Story Map Tour in ArcGIS Enterprise versions prior to 10.6.1 where you may not be able to drag points in the Story Map Tour Builder if your map uses a vector basemap that uses a reference layer, such as the Imagery Hybrid basemap or the Light Grey basemap. It would be good if you could try changing the basemap used in your Story Map Tour to see if that fixes the issue. - Story Map Shortlist has an issue where an invalid locator specified at the Organization level causes entering street addresses in that builder to fail, and we see the same issue via HTTPS if there's an Organization wide geolocator that uses HTTP. It's not quite the same as what you are seeing but that is another thing that signing in with a Public account instead of an Organizational account and making a new tour, would help to eliminate. Hi Kevin Are those reports shared publicly? In other words are you wanting to embed those reports inside a publicly shared story map, or is this all for use inside an organization. If they are publicly shared and don't contain any private or sensitive data perhaps you post the URL of one of the reports? Rupert

Hi Jamie One thing to check is how is your group shared. Are you able to share other content, such as a web map, into that group so that other users can open it. In other words, it would be good to narrow down if what you are seeing is specific to the Story Map app or something generic. Rupert

Hi Ian Thanks for the note and sorry about the lost places. I prefer not to use the term "user error" especially with something like this that isn't that clear and that has tripped a few people up with Story Map Tour and Story Map Shortlist. Those apps store their underlying data in a web map and so this can lead to issues if you are working on the map in a separate tab or browser window while also working in the builder for your story, This can cause overwrites like you describe as there's not a item locking or multi-session mechanism on the map. It is a bit tricky because if you want to add additional layers into your Tour or Shortlist map you have to do that via the ArcGIS map viewer outside of the builder. It works OK but be sure to close your builder session first before tackling the web map update. And if you've got a lot of time invested in places you've added, you could also save a copy of the underlying web map used by your Shortlist in order to make a backup, using the Save As option in the ArcGIS map viewer. One workflow you may know about which may be good if you are worried about losing your places again is to define your Shortlist content outside of the builder as a GIS data layer, for example as a layer based on a spreadsheet, You can then create a Shortlist using the 'as-is' workflow in which the Shortlist displays the places defined in that layer 'as-is' without allowing you to edit them in the builder. In that workflow, you manage your places by editing the layer in your map, or replacing the layer with an updated one, and when you work in the builder (for example to define the colors for the tab defined in your layer), the Shortlist doesn't write anything into the map or update it. It is a handy workflow if you want to display existing GIS features as Shortlist places or you prefer managing your places as GIS data or in a spreadsheet. The one gotcha with this workflow is that your pictures have to be referenced via URLs you store as attribute data for each place, so it works best if your pics are already online or you are able to put them onto a web server, and in this case you should be aware of the recommended sizes for those pics because we don't optimize images referenced via URLs like we do with images you upload or access from Flickr. Hi Maja. It's not possible to add a freeform search like that. This isn't quite what you asked for but you could define story actions in the description text in your Map Series, such as in the first tab that your readers see, that take them to different tabs in your Series. So a reader could click on a story action link in your description text for a particular topic and get taken to the tab that contains the Map Journal about that topic. You can also add story actions into a Map Journal's narrative text to take people to a particular sections in that Journal. But you couldn't make a story action in a Map Series tab that takes your readers to a particular section in an embedded Map Journal. Rupert

Hi, sorry about the issue. I'm not sure what caused it but here are some thoughts: - Can I check to make sure you are returning to the Story Map Shortlist Builder in order to view your content? When you view your Story Map Shortlist in the builder, it will show you all your content, whether or not your places all have images and are located on the map. When you view a Shortlist outside of the builder (in other words when you view it the same as your readers will), it automatically hides places that don't have images yet or that aren't located on the map yet. This can lead some authors to think that some of their places are missing. We hide incomplete places when Shortlists are being viewed so that readers only see finalized ones. - Can I also check that you haven't copied your Story Map Shortlist (using ArcGIS Online Assistant). This isn't recommended because Shortlists (and Map Tours) store their places in an associated web map, and copying Shortlists or Tours can result in two apps using the same web map, which can result in places being overwritten if edits are being made in both apps. - Also there's no auto-save in the Story Map builders, which can cause issues if you are more used to cloud-based apps not having a specific Save function. Good to hear you got it to work: sorry for all the hoops we made you jump through. I also feel like I don't want to hear that horse ever again We'll look at getting that blog post updated to avoid the issue where for some reason copying that embed code out of it is losing vital spaces from the tags.
