You can manually add labels to an ArcGIS web map by drawing them on. You simply type in the text, so it isn't the same as feature labeling you are asking for, and the text doesn't scale with the map (so it remains the same size as you zoom in and out) but it might be a useful alternative. To add text labels to an ArcGIS web map, open your map in ArcGIS Explorer Online, choose Add Features, and you'll see a Text option under Map Notes.

Just a note that ArcGIS 10.0 for Desktop Service Pack 3 is now available: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPatch&PID=160&MetaID=1802 This update enables ArcMap to open web maps. When you open a web map, a map document is automatically created and saved in a folder named after the web map in your My Documents > ArcGIS > Web Maps folder. Note: The support for web maps in 10.0 Service Pack 3 is limited. It doesn't provide support for all the different types of data found in a web map, so some web map content is dropped out when you open a web map in ArcMap. It does support ArcGIS map services, ArcGIS image services and OGC WMS services. It does not support web map layers based on uploaded shapefiles, CSV files, GPX files, KML network links, or map note features (feature collections simply drawn on the map with the drawing tools in the web clients). Web maps containing these unsupported layers can still be opened in ArcMap but the unsupported layer types are dropped out and don't appear in ArcMap. Also note that in Service Pack 3 some web maps may take several minutes to open in ArcMap. Support for the full range of web map content is coming in the ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 release in Q1 2012. Sorry again about the lack of full compatibility at this point in the desktop clients with the latest functionality in the ArcGIS web map format.

Hi Ben Sorry about the issue preventing web maps from opening in ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. The fix for this issue (NIM065725) is in the upcoming 10.0 Service Pack 3. This will allow you to open ArcGIS web maps in ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. When you open a web map in 10.0 Service Pack 3, it gets converted into an MXD file. Opening ArcGIS web maps isn't supported in 9.3.1, but if there is a particular map service used as a layer in a web map that you would like to use in any version of ArcGIS Desktop, you can make a connection in ArcCatalog to the server from which the service is being served. Look in the details page in the ArcGIS.com entry for the web map to see a list of the services it contains. Note: The support for web maps in 10.0 Service Pack 3 doesn't provide support for all the different types of data found in a web map. It will support ArcGIS map services, ArcGIS image services and OGC WMS services in web maps, but not web map layers based on uploaded shapefiles, CSV files, GPX files, KML network links, or note features (features simply drawn on the map). Support for this wider range of web map content is planned for the ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 release in Q1 2012. Sorry again about the lack of full compatibility at this point in the desktop clients with the latest functionality in the ArcGIS web map format.

Hi Michael Sorry about the issue. Since my last post on this thread, we have updated the internal format of web maps and as a result you can't bring map notes drawn on top of web maps into ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 1700 or ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. 😞 We are still in the process of updating those desktop applications to convert map notes to feature layers. I don't have a date for when this support will be released in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. This support will be in ArcGIS Desktop 10.1. Ths story is similar for support for layers in web maps that reference CSV and shapefiles, etc. Those currently aren't supported when you open a web map in the desktop clients. Ideally it would all be synchronized and all supported in the Desktop clients but basically the ArcGIS Online folks have got this great new web map functionality and as this can be released on the web faster than on the desktop, we didn't want to hold it up. I looked into why that map service in your web map that isn't appearing when you open it in Explorer Desktop 1700 and it turns out it is a bug we have whereby service layers get dropped out of web maps by the desktop clients when you open them if there are any map note layers underneath the map service layer in the web map (Explorer Online allows you to move note layers so they come below map service layers in your web map's Contents window). We'll get that fixed in the Desktop clients so they won't drop out service layers in this situation. If there are no note layers below the service layer, the service layer won't get dropped out. So that explains why all the layers in your web map (except the basemap) don't appear when you open it in your desktop client. 😞 Definitely not great and we are definitely working on improving this! PS. I saw from your ArcGIS Online profile and your test map that you work on GIS at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Beautiful place so close to the city! I was lucky enough to stay at Cavallo Point last Christmas and hiked around the Marin Headlands.

Hi Josh Sorry about the issue preventing web maps from opening in ArcGIS Desktop 10. This is still a problem in 10.0 Service Pack 2. The fix for this issue (NIM065725) is on track for being released in 10.0 Service Pack 3 later this year. However, this won't provide direct support for all the different types of data found in a web map. It will support ArcGIS map services, ArcGIS image services and OGC WMS services in web maps but not web map layers based on uploaded shapefiles, CSV files, GPX files, KML network links, or note features. Support for this wider range of web map content is planned for the ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 release in Q1 2012.

Hi Clem Here is how to make your map note layer appear in the legend of your web map. 1. Open your web map in ArcGIS Explorer Online. 2. In the Contents window, click the > control next to your map notes layer to see its properties. 3. Check the 'Show in Legend' box. 4. Save the map. Your map note layer will now be shown in the legend when you view your web map with either of the web clients.

Hi Fraser Sorry about the delay with this. We're going to put this fix into the next service pack for 10.0, Service Pack 3, which will be released later this year. This fix will enable you to open an ArcGIS web map in ArcMap 10.0 but this unfortunately won't add support for all the new functionality and data types that have been added into ArcGIS web maps in the last couple of weeks, such as CSV and SHP files. As the ArcGIS Online platform moves ahead and the range of data that can be used in an ArcGIS web map is enhanced, the Desktop platform won't be fully in-sync with the new functionality until we release 10.1 next year. So although 10.0 SP3 will let you open an web map, not all of its contents will be supported. For the workflow you are looking to do, your best bet is to manually add the map services that you want to work with into your ArcMap map document by connecting to them in the GIS Servers folder of the Catalog. Sorry again for the limitations in this area.

Rupert, When do you think the patch will be available? I would like to bring my added edits (the graphics) from ArcGIS.com maps into ArcMap for conversion from graphics to geodb features and I can't seem to do that until this patch you speak of is complete. Michael Hi Michael, The patch that will allow ArcMap 10.0 to open web maps in the latest format is still being tested and I'll ping this thread when it is announced. It will be a few weeks still before this happens. Sorry about the delay. I should have also mentioned in my post above that while this patch will let you open the new web map format inside ArcMap, it doesn't include support for note features (features and annotation drawn on the map using the editable layers functionality) so with the patch installed if you open a web map containing note features, they won't appear in ArcMap. We are working on adding this functionality so that note features get automatically converted into geodatabase feature layers when you open a web map in ArcMap but this is planned for the 10.1 release which we will be talking about more around the time of the User Conference. Actually for the workflow you are interested in, where you enable a user to create and edit features via the web which you then collect and bring into your geodatabase, our recommended workflow would be to use ArcGIS Server to create a map service with feature access capability turned on (i.e. create a feature service). You can then create a web map in ArcGIS Online that includes your feature service that people can access either using ArcGIS Explorer Online or ArcGIS.com's map viewer so they can create and edit features in your service. Here's a video of a session from the 2010 User Conference that is intro and overview of using feature services in web maps. It takes you through how to serve up a feature service, how users work with it out of the box in a web map to edit your database (no development required!!!!) and how it all works. http://video.esri.com/watch/156/web-editing-in-arcgis-server-10

Sorry about the issue you are seeing. At the beginning of March we updated the internal format used by web maps in ArcGIS Online in order to introduce some new functionality, like the really nice configurable popups for map service layers, and the ability to save these popups out of the web map they are defined in and into the ArcGIS.com entries for the map services you own, so the popups get used automatically in any web map the service gets added into. Unfortunately ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 can't open those web maps, so that is why you seeing a message when you try and open a web map that uses the new format. Any web map created or modified after 2 March 2011 is in the new format. Web maps with a last modified date of 2 March or earlier can still be opened in ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. We are still working on releasing a patch for 10.0 so that it can open web maps in the new format. Sorry that we did not get this fix into 10.0 Service Pack 2. If you want to add the services used in a web map to ArcGIS Desktop 10 (or 9.3) go to the Details page of the web map, scroll down to the Map Contents section where the services used in the web map are listed, click the link to the service you want to add into your map, and then click 'View in ArcMap' in the ArcGIS services directory page that appears. (If you do that and you get a broken layer in your map don't give up yet: there is probably a configuration issue in the server that you are accessing that prevents the correct connection being made, but if you copy the first part of the URL of the server and delete the 'REST/' part of the URL, you should still be able to connect to the server in your Catalog via the GIS Servers > Add ArcGIS Server command). To one add any of the ArcGIS basemaps into ArcMap 10, go to this page or use the File > Add Data > Add Basemap command. To add a basemap into ArcGIS Desktop 9.3, go to this page or use the File > Add Data From ArcGIS Online command.

My previous post was incorrect in that it said "This will be fixed in the upcoming Service Pack 2 for 10.0". Unfortunately we were not able to get our completed fix into the upcoming Service Pack 2 for 10.0, so you'll still encounter this issue when trying to open a web map created after March 2 2011 in ArcMap. Sorry about the issue. We hope to be releasing a fix for this for 10.0 users soon.

Hi Mike Sorry about the problem. ArcGIS Desktop 10 currently can't open web maps in the new updated format that we released this week. So this applies to new web maps created after 2 March 2011, or existing web maps that have been modified and saved after that date. Web maps with a last modified date of 2 March 2011 or earlier can still be opened in ArcGIS Desktop 10. This applies to web maps created in ArcGIS.com and the ArcGIS Explorer Online client. This will be fixed in the upcoming Service Pack 2 for 10.0. It will also be available as a separate patch that can be installed over 10.0 with no SPs and over 10.0 SP1. I'll ping this thread when it is available. Note that this fix will allow web maps in the new format to be opened in ArcMap 10 but map notes drawn on top of the web map (i.e. geographic features and annotation you add to web maps using the new editable layers functionality introduced in ArcGIS.com this week) are not yet supported in ArcGIS Desktop, so they won't appear in your resulting MXD file. Support for map note features in ArcGIS Desktop is being prepared for our next release (10.1) that is currently in development. In the 10.1 release, map note feature layers in a web map will get converted into geodatabase feature classes when you open the map in ArcMap and will appear as feature layers in your MXD. The workaround if you want to add the services used in a web map to ArcGIS Desktop 10 (or 9.3) is to go to the Details page of the web map, such as this page in the case of one of your maps, go to the Map Contents section where the services used in the web map are listed, click the link to the service you want to add, like this one, and then click 'View in ArcMap' in the ArcGIS services directory page that appears. To one add any of the ArcGIS.com basemaps into ArcMap 10, go to this page or use the File > Add Data > Add Basemap command. To add a basemap into ArcGIS Desktop 9.3, go to this page or use the File > Add Data From ArcGIS Online command. The (very misleading) message '"Invalid Web Map. Web Map must have at least one layer present." you are seeing is what you get if you try and open a web map in the new updated format in ArcMap 10.0 without Service Pack 1 installed. If you have Service Pack 1 you'll get the message "Could not open the specified file" (still not of course what you want but arguably less misleading). Sorry again for this issue with syncing the Desktop with Online.

There are four basemaps that work in ArcGIS 9.2 but information about them is rather hidden. See this ArcGIS 9.2 help topic for full info: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?topicname=an_overview_of_gis_service_layers Here are the four MXD files that you can open in 9.2 to easily access the four basemaps: http://links.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/en/arcmap92/layers There's no support for Bing, OpenStreetMap, Physical, Terrain, or the World Topographic Map service in 9.2. Also note that the four services that are supported in 9.2 are older versions that are no longer being updated, so the content you see in them may not be as up-to-date as what you see for the same services in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop.

Notes in web maps you create using ArcGIS Explorer Online currently aren't supported in the ArcGIS.com viewer, ArcGIS for iOS or ArcGIS Desktop. Sorry about that. This functionality is still under development. However, they are supported in the free ArcGIS Explorer Desktop app and using build 1500 of that app you can convert them into geodatabase features using the following steps: Load your web map into ArcGIS Explorer 1500 using the ArcGIS Online window you can access from the ArcGIS Explorer button in the top left hand corner of the app. In the Contents window, right-click the notes (or folder containing notes) that you want to convert to features. Choose Share and then in the dialog that appears choose the Layer Package option. If you now open that layer package in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 or 10, you'll be able to access the notes as features, change symbology, work with the attributes, export to shapefile, etc. Tip: In the ArcMap Table Of Contents, open the Layer Properties dialog for the notes and turn all the fields on in the Fields tab in order to access all their attributes. Direct support for notes in ArcGIS Desktop when you open web maps is planned for 10.1. Bookmarks in web maps are supported in 10.0 Service Pack 1 which is now available.
