Could you make your map tour story map public and post a link to it here so we can see what you mean? The map tour template is designed so that the images+caption are off to the side of the map so people can see them together with the map at the same time.

Great to hear. If you go public with your Shortlist, we'd like to see it. We recommend adding a 'web mapping application' entry like this one to represent your shortlist app (or any other app you create by downloading a story maps template) in ArcGIS Online. In this way people who search ArcGIS Online looking for cool examples (including Esri staff!) can find and launch your app. Put 'story map' and the name of the template (i.e. Shortlist, Countdown, Playlist, etc) into the Tags field so it will show up in queries like this one, which lists all the app entries in ArcGIS Online with shortlist in their metadata, sorted by date most recent first.

Hi Scott It Should Just Work if you have marker symbol files for the additional numbers installed. See this zip file which contains the additional numbered files we have: http://links.esri.com/storymaps/numbered_marker_symbols

Try leaving the Name and Description fields blank. It will then give you no caption area so your image won't be obscured at all. This is especially useful if there is text in an image that you want people to be able to read without the caption getting in the way

And here's an additional zip file of marker symbols that may be useful. Several authors have made additional marker symbols and kindly shared them with us. http://links.esri.com/storymaps/numbered_marker_symbols

Hi Anthony (and also Gwen) for pointing out that the button for flagging a thread as answered is missing in this forum. We've asked our forum person to add this feature in. Sorry about the prob and thanks for alerting us.

In order to keep the map tour UI fairly simple we didn't add a legend option or add support for the native popups in your web map, but these are among the things we are thinking about for the future based on feedback from authors. Some authors are adding their own legends by using the intro picture option and using that to show their legend. You can also download the template and customize the code to add a legend and I'll post an example of that if I come across a good one. My colleague Tim Craig in the Esri California regional office came up with this ingenious use of the map tour subtitle to provide a legend for this demo map tour. He just used HTML tags in the subtitle text to do this. No custom coding needed: http://caro.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=4b456fa5a437429ba8eaa59496a43c6f&webmap=ab82b9f88c3944f6a01f4f2323416738#

Hi Seth Sounds good! The Spain In Books map includes a lot of customization. But if you are interested in customizing your shortlist map you can also do some simpler tweaks. Here's a handy blog post about that: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/esri-insider/2013/10/30/creating-and-customizing-a-story-map-from-a-non-giser/

Hi Dale We don't support multiple images in the out-of-the-box templates so far. Some users have worked around this, to really nice effect, by creating montages of images: City of San Luis Obispo, CA street art: http://slocity.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=8276112a27a24dc7af0c3daa3b07c595&webmap=67fabd122dc547b99b54ead037831889 NJ American Water tank rehabilitation: http://njaw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=6473b53f8be641459e24faf9ebcd56a9&webmap=549289c725b24e6785f7e5c162db7b51 Some of the custom apps we've created do have multiple images: Beating the Odds: A Year in the Life of a Piping Plover http://www.audubon.org/plover I think long term we would like to add support for multiple images in some of the templates because it has lots of applications. Thanks for trying the story maps!! See more examples here: http://storymaps.esri.com

Hi Mike, One additional tip is that if you want to do more customization, you can download the template and put it onto your own website or webserver. By hosting the template yourself you can do unlimited customization of the app. There are some examples of story map customization tweeted on @EsriStoryMaps. To download the map tour template, go here.

Also, here are two examples of customized map tour story maps that present some multi-media content. This one simply adds video and audio links to the captions in the tour: http://calvertgis.co.cal.md.us/historytours/Mackall_rd/ This one replaces the photos in the map tour with videos: http://blacksburg.bev.net/WalkingTour/ Here's a link to their main website...you may be able to contact them to see how they made the tour. http://www.blacksburg.va.us/Index.aspx?page=213

Hi RuthAnne We have just released the updated version of the map tour template download. Here is the link to the updated zip file: http://links.esri.com/storymaps/map_tour_template_zip Your existing web map will work with this update OK. This should fix the issues you saw. You will have to re-apply any customizations you have made to your existing template download files, such as changing the logo to be your own instead of Esri's. To all map tour template download users: We recommend that all users who have deployed a map tour story map by downloading the previous version and putting it on their own web server or web site download the updated version of the template and update their deployment using those files. You will need to re-do any customizations you have done to your existing map tour. So it is a good idea to make a copy of your existing map tour first. It's worth doing the update because our updated version fixes several issues. Note: with the recent update of ArcGIS Online this week, we have enhanced the map tour template so all user accounts, not just ArcGIS Online for Organizations subscribers, can create map tours without downloading the template by using the hosted version of the template which is built-in to ArcGIS Online. Previously the hosted map tour template was only available to ArcGIS Online for Organizations subscribers at the Publisher or Admin level. Now it is available to all user accounts including Public Accounts. All you need to do to get started is to create an empty web map, save it, and then share it as a web application using the Map Tour template you will see in the Template gallery. Follow the instructions and when you configure the app, you'll be prompted what to do. Also, if you have created a map tour with the hosted version of the template (the one that is in the template gallery when you share a web map) then there is a new option now available in the Organize dialog that lets you nominate the first point in your tour to be an intro image+caption for your map tour that isn't shown on the map as a point. Previously this behavior was only available in the template download (where it is the default behavior). But now you hosted map tour users can opt in and get that behavior if you want. It is nice because it lets you give your audience a picture and some text to set the scene for your tour, without the caption+image having to be about a particular place on the map. So hen users press the > arrow next to your intro to start the tour, they get take to place 1, instead of place 1 being what they see when the tour first starts up.
