Hi Wdcep, Today we released an update to the Shortlist template that addresses the issue you raised in this thread. In the new version, you can now have a clickable point layer in your shortlist that gets displayed as a supporting layer rather than defining a tab. This allows you to add CSV or shapefile-based point layers into your web map with the same attributes as your point layers that define the tabs, but which are displayed on the map with their static web map symbology and are not used to define tabs. See point c below. Here's the details on this new release: Just want to let you know that today we updated the Shortlist zip file to release an update to the template. You can download the update from the Shortlist section of the new Story Maps website: http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/shortlist/ If users have already downloaded the template, they may want to download it again, but if they have done a lot of customization to the template it may not be worth it just to get these fixes. This updated version: a) fixes the bug where there was a bad screen refresh at the bottom of the screen when you maximized your web browser. b) fixes the bug where if you opened a Shortlist and immediately pressed the home button, the map extent would shift a little. c) allows authors for the first time to add supporting point layers in their maps. Previously you could only add line or polygon supporting layers into your map, because all point layers were used to define tabs. There's a new configuration parameter in the Index.html that lets you specify which point layers, if any, you want to be displayed on the map as supporting layers that do not define tabs. For example, you may want to add a point feature onto your Shortlist representing a convention center or a set of points representing transit stations, and allow users to click on these to get more information. So you can now do that. Use any of the CSV files or shapefiles in the Shortlist /Samples folders as a template for your point layer(s), add the point layer(s) into your web map, and then enter the name of the layer(s) in the new configuration parameter you'll see in the Index.html called: POINT_LAYERS_NOT_TO_BE_SHOWN_AS_TABS. For example, in this Phoenix Shortlist, zoom in on the urban areas http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-phoenix/ and the transit stations appear as supporting point features. d) if a shortlist only contains one tab, the actual tab control is no longer shown, so the look is much cleaner for one-tab Shortlists: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=10b8cbf55e44423e98806fdc7f05e0a9

I was fearing that would be your next question 🙂 For the features in supporting layers, currently the map tour doesn't support popups when you click on them or maptips when you hover over them. That is an enhancement on our list that folks have asked for. PS. In your tour, the opening image is really narrow. You could make that image taller by adding some blank space at the bottom so that the caption has a blank area to sit on top of.

The map tour app will treat all of the points in your Locations layer as being points in your tour. To add those red points as static features instead that are on the map but not part of the tour, you'll need to remove them from your Locations layer and add them into your web map as a separate point layer. The map tour will default to using the uppermost point layer in your web map to define the tour points, so make sure your new layer is below your Locations layer in the layer hierarchy. You can also add other additional layers into your map tour's web map as well, such as lines or polygons. These will be displayed in the map tour using symbology that you specified for them in your web map. For example this tour includes static line features added by the author: http://dcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=cae59ad120464b118421da33ceb1d1af and this tour includes static points and lines added by the author: http://kygeonet.ky.gov/StoryMaps/KyStateParkLodges

Hi Oliver. I am so pleased that is working now, and we'll update our code so that other people using the new tiled layers for their basemaps don't run into the same issue. We'd like to see your story map when you are finished. Can you add a 'web mapping application' entry into ArcGIS Online to represent your Shortlist story map app, like this one: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6de17002eb9e4ad0bf014575d21e242e . Add 'story map' and 'shortlist' into the Tags to help people find your entry. To add a web mapping application entry, go to My Content and click 'Add Item'. In this way, when you have finished your Shortlist, it will show up in ArcGIS Online if people search for examples of Shortlist apps with a query like this: http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=shortlist&t=content&sortField=modified&sortOrder=desc&focus=applications Thanks

Thanks Oliver, and thanks for raising this issue here on the forum: It looks like the Shortlist app template code needs updating in order to point at a more recent version of our Javascript API in order to support tiled layer basemaps like the one your map is using. Try making a copy of the folder you've downloaded the Shortlist template into, and in the index.html file in that copy, update the following three lines of code: Update line 11: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://js.arcgis.com/3.8/js/esri/css/esri.css" /> Update line 12: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://js.arcgis.com/3.8/js/dojo/dijit/themes/claro/claro.css"> Update line 20: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://js.arcgis.com/3.8/"></script> We believe it your Shortlist will work if you make those three changes. Sorry about the issue. PS. It may be a bit hard to see the numbered symbols against that basemap you are using because it is quite colorful. One thing you could do is to apply a transparency to that basemap layer in your web map to lighten the basemap a little bit.

Hi Oliver I can reproduce the issue and I'm looking into it. If I try and launch your web map: http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=bb54c07ecd3d43e8bf5fce2875df30f6 in the Shortlist template, it doesn't launch: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=bb54c07ecd3d43e8bf5fce2875df30f6 I've made a copy of your web map, and I've changed the basemap to be one of our standard basemaps: http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=21ccf49a74194757a3fd770531e91608 and this web map does launch successfully in the Shortlist template: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=21ccf49a74194757a3fd770531e91608 Is there an entry in ArcGIS Online for the basemap that you are using in your web map. In other words, what did you add into your web map in order to make that your basemap?

Your web map: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=bb54c07ecd3d43e8bf5fce2875df30f6 won't work in the Shortlist template because it is using a feature service. The Shortlist only supports shapefiles (uploaded into the web map directly as a zip files) or CSV files (uploaded into the web map directly) for the point layers that define the different tabs. So your shortlist will work fine if you, for example, export your ArcMap layer to a shapefile from ArcMap (or maybe you already have the shapefile because you started off with a shapefile). Tip: To test a shortlist web map easily, put its web map ID into our generic hosted URL: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=8504932f183c4b8699dc6ba28235e398 replacing the web map ID in the URL above with the ID of your web map: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=bb54c07ecd3d43e8bf5fce2875df30f6

Hi Royce This would be a nice enhancement and it is on our list. Currently in the map tour you can specify a scale that you want people to be taken to once they start the tour, but it would be great if you could also specify an extent for one or more of the points in your tour so you can have more control over what users see. For example in this app: http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/2013/maptour-sandiego-transportation/ some of the tour points refer to sections of roads or rail networks and it would be good to be able to zoom the user to the extent of those features when they go to them in the tour. Another example is: http://kygeonet.ky.gov/StoryMaps/KyPhysiographicRegions/ in which each point in the tour describes a region on the map, so it would be cool to be able to take the user to the extent of each specific region.

Yeah, this is an optional step. When you download a template and self-host it, you don't need to add a web mapping application entry into ArcGIS Online that points to it. But it's a best practice because doing this enables other ArcGIS Online users to find and launch your app easily, and also allows your app to be added into ArcGIS Online galleries. In ArcGIS Online, just go to My Content and click the 'Add Item' button. Chose the 'An Application' option in the 'The Item is' dropdown list at the top of the dialog that appears, and then enter the URL of your app. In the Tags field, it's good to add 'map tour' and 'story map' as tags to help people find your entry if they search for examples of story maps or map tours. (It means your app will also show up nicely when we in the Story Maps team search ArcGIS Online looking for cool new apps people have made!). And don't forget to also add a full range of geographic place names in the Tags field. So if your map tour is about a particular US city, put name of the state the city is in into Tags field. This all makes it easier for people to find your tour. After you've added your item, ArcGIS Online will take you to the new entry you've created. On that page, use the Edit button to perform any further edits to the entry, especially adding a nice looking 200x133 thumbnail image, such as one of the images from your tour for the thumbnail, or a screenshot of the tour. After you've saved your edits, click the Share button to share your application item publicly. I'll update the Readme.pdf file for the map tour download to make it clearer how to add a web mapping application entry into ArcGIS Online to represent a map tour that you self-host. Thanks

Glad it is working. Hey when you are ready to public with the app, could you add a 'web mapping application' entry into ArcGIS Online to represent your app, like this one: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6de17002eb9e4ad0bf014575d21e242e Be sure to add 'story map', 'shorlist' and the name of your city and state into the Tags on the entry you add so that people who search ArcGIS Online for examples of story maps will be able to find your app. With that in place, it will ensure that your app shows up in this search which returns story map apps in ArcGIS Online: http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=shortlist&t=content&sortField=avgrating&sortOrder=desc&focus=applications and also enables your app to be added into a gallery. (Note: Manually adding a web mapping application entry into ArcGIS Online to surface your app is totally optional and only needs doing if you deploy an app by downloading and self-hosting an app. If you use a hosted app like the map tour or swipe, then you don't need to add an entry like this in order for people to find your app when they search ArcGIS Online because ArcGIS Online automatically makes a web mapping application for you when you make a hosted app). PS. You said: "I completely forgot that we had to add the underscore as the field name in the shapefile would not come in without it." That sounds a bit odd because you don't need to rename the icon files in the app in order to use a shapefile, and the names of those files are unrelated to the fields in the shapefiles that you can use to define the points in your shortlist web map.

Hi Penny Interesting looking project! It's OK to use shapefiles or CSV files in the 'shortlist' template you are using (in fact it currently doesn't support feature services). I can reproduce your issue with those two points in your app. When I zoom out so that places 37 and 38 are displayed in the Transit tab, I see that marker points are not being displayed for those two locations on the map: if I click on either of those places in the tab, I get a popup showing their location on the map but there's no colored marker symbol there. At first I thought perhaps your installation of the shortlist template was missing the icon files for those two numbers, but I can access those via a URL directly using the URL pattern that matches the file names that the icons have in the Shortlist template download: http://gis.missouricitytx.gov/Shortlist/images/icons/green/NumberIcong37.png http://gis.missouricitytx.gov/Shortlist/images/icons/green/NumberIcong38.png but what is odd is that I can't seem to access all the others via the URL pattern. If I go to your app and right-click one of the green marker symbols that is appearing, and get its URL, it is using a different naming convention than the two above (it has an underscore between Number and Icon): http://gis.missouricitytx.gov/Shortlist/images/icons/green/Number_Icong5.png In the Shortlist download all those icons have the same naming convention so I think some of the files have been renamed at your end but not all of them. Anyway, if you go to your /Shortlist/images/icons/green folder and rename the files for 37 and 38 to add an underline into their name I bet it will work OK.

Your Shortlist sounds interesting. When you are ready to go public with it, could you post a link here and also add a 'web mapping application' entry into ArcGIS Online to represent it (add 'shortlist' and 'story map' into the tags so it shows up in this query: http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=Shortlist&t=content&focus=applications&sortField=modified&sortOrder=desc )

Hi Olivia, it sounds like you are not referencing your images via a URL to a publicly accessible web location. Your images need to be on the web at a location so they can be accessed publicly via a URL. When you upload a shapefile CSV containing these URLs into an ArcGIS.com map viewer, the default popup will just show you a 'more info' link, like you describe. But when you display your web map in the Shortlist tmeplate the photos will be displayed correctly if the shapefile or CSV file you added into your web map uses the expected set of shortlist attributes. If it isn't working still, could you share your web map publicly and put the URL here so we can try it out ourselves and see what is wrong?
