Thanks so much for testing that. We need to look into this here to see if we can hook those text strings up. I can ask about this but this won't likely be added to our immediate development agenda. One thing that might be relevant: there are several map tour examples where audio and video have been embedded into the tour.

Hi The problem with ALT text is that it usually causes a hover-over tip to appear when the cursor is positioned on top of the image which would get in the way in the map tour. I've not tested this yet but the name and caption should be screen readable in a map tour.

Hi Trent See the email I've sent you as well. Support for feature services as a source for the points in the tabs in the Shortlist is on our list but it not being actively developed currently. Feature services can be added into a Shortlist but cannot currently be used to define the points in the tabs or a clickable supporting layer (such as a study area polygon or boundary). See the link at the bottom of the Shortlist page on the Story Maps website for the Github location.

Hi. The Shortlist created by this author has been customized to show an additional hyperlink field in the Details panel: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/104401-Presenting-a-geographic-discovery-tool-for-books-based-on-the-shortlist-template

Here's an example that uses Soundcloud in a map tour deployed via a download: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=3000c16ef9814c7dadd5ccc9a237435f See this blog post too: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2014/02/20/adding-audio-to-your-story-map-map-tours/

We generally avoid auto-zoom in the story maps so that the user can control the map extent themselves. It can be frustrating for users we feel if they zoom to an extent and scale they are comfortable with only for the app to suddenly override their choice. We do pan the map automatically if the point the user has indicated they are interested in is not currently visible on the map, although that situation never happens in the Shortlist because the tabs don't display places that aren't in the current extent. The map tour has an auto-zoom option that lets the author choose to zoom the user to a specific scale once they start to proceed through the tour, which is nice because authors can start off showing an overview of all the points and then have the map zoom in as the user starts the tour. But even in that case we've built in a rule that if the user does choose to manually zoom the map as they proceed through the tour, the auto-zoom automatically turns itself off to put the end-user in charge of the zoom level.

Hi. sorry about the issue. Could you check that your web maps are all shared publicly. Also could you post the URL of your side accordion app so we can have a look?

Hi Ben This is awesome work! I really like the customization to pop out the marker symbol on the hover event in the tab. I'm replying here in addition to the email I sent you yesterday so that people on the forums can see some feedback from us. Thanks for sending us the sets of numbered marker symbols. As you noticed, the Shortlist wasn't designed to handle this many points in one tab and there's some enhancement we could do on our end during the initial load to make it clearer to the user that the map is loading. Like I mentioned in my email, in the current version of the Shortlist template download, we made an enhancement so that shortlists with only one tab of places no longer have a tab 'handle' control at the top of the tab at all, which gives one-tab shortlists a cleaner look. But it may not be worth downloading that new version again just to get that enhancement because you are actually using the tab handle control anyway to convey some info to the user. Rupert

Hi Keith That's great you got that to work and it is a really nice customization of the Shortlist to make additional features appear when the user switches to a different tab. A couple of suggestions from me: - The road centerline features that you turn on via the Road Maintenance tabs are a bit hard to see on the map - The road centerline features can be clickable if you want so users can get a popup about them and also hover over them to get the street name. To do that though they'd need to have the full set of attributes that the Shortlist template expects (same as the point features in your tabs) and would need to be added into your web map as a zipped up shapefile rather than a feature service). (Feature services currently aren't supported as clickable supporting layers in the Shortlist but can be added as non-clickable features like you have done). - You've added behavior that auto-zooms when the user clicks on a point of interest either in the tabs or in the map. Nothing wrong with that technically but we would perhaps recommend against doing that in the Shortlist template because, as the tabs are context sensitive to the current extent of the map, it means that the contents of the user's tabs will change dramatically as soon as they click on anything, because they'll only see places listed that are inside their current extent, and they have to click the Home button to get back to the initial state where they can see all of the places

Hi Luke What type of custom basemap do you want to use? It should just work as long as your custom basemap is publicly accessible. Rupert

As long as the image file you are referencing is publicly accessible on the web somewhere via a URL, it will work. For the Shortlists I have made, I just put my png files into a folder on a web server I have permission to put my files onto, so that each image has a URL, like http://downloads.esri.com/blogs/places/palmsprings/palm_canyon.png. But you could use a photo sharing site instead (just make sure the URL you use to reference your image on the photo sharing site is a URL to the actual image file, not to a page in which the image is embedded). I then just put the URL for the appropriate image into the IMAGE_URL attribute for the corresponding place in the shapefile or CSV file for each of the point layers in the web map I'm using. The Shortlist template then automatically displays the contents of those layers as tabs: http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-palmsprings

You could use the Shortlist application template for example and have separate tabs for each set of places. Then simply include the places for all seven locations on the web map you use. You could set up bookmarks in the web map for each location so that the user can choose between the seven locations. and in the Shortlist application template these bookmarks automatically appear in the Zoom menu in the upper right. When the user zooms to one of your seven destinations, the tabs of places automatically update to show the user just those places that destination. http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-phoenix/

And just to let you and other Shortlist users know, today we updated the Shortlist zip file to release an update to the template. You can download the update from the Shortlist section of the new Story Maps website: http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/shortlist/ This release includes the fix that we showed you how to do manually above to update the JavaScript API version number that the Shortlist uses. This release includes some additional fixes as follows: a) fixes the bug where there was a bad screen refresh at the bottom of the screen when you maximized your web browser. b) fixes the bug where if you opened a Shortlist and immediately pressed the home button, the map extent would shift a little. c) allows authors for the first time to add supporting point layers in their maps. Previously you could only add line or polygon supporting layers into your map, because all point layers were used to define tabs. There's a new configuration parameter in the Index.html that lets you specify which point layers, if any, you want to be displayed on the map as supporting layers that do not define tabs. For example, you may want to add a point feature onto your Shortlist representing a convention center or a set of points representing transit stations, and allow users to click on these to get more information. So you can now do that. Use any of the CSV files or shapefiles in the Shortlist /Samples folders as a template for your point layer(s), add the point layer(s) into your web map, and then enter the name of the layer(s) in the new configuration parameter you'll see in the Index.html called: POINT_LAYERS_NOT_TO_BE_SHOWN_AS_TABS. For example, in this Phoenix Shortlist, zoom in on the urban areas http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/shortlist-phoenix/ and the transit stations appear as supporting point features. d) if a shortlist only contains one tab, the actual tab control is no longer shown, so the look is much cleaner for one-tab Shortlists: http://storymaps.esri.com/templates/shortlist/?webmap=10b8cbf55e44423e98806fdc7f05e0a9
