Hi Pam This is a little bit of a limitation in ArcGIS Online that it is good to be aware of. The view count you see for maps and apps in listings in ArcGIS Online, such as the List and Grid views in My Content, search results, and group contents isn't the most up-to-date view count for the item: it's a cached value stored behind the scenes. My Stories also gets the view count it displays from the same listing, so the view count in My Stories is also not showing the most up-to-date count: it is also the cached value. This is why you may check back in ArcGIS Online My Content or My Stories and not see any change at all in the view count for your story map, even though everyone loves it and it is pretty much going viral on Twitter . To see the most recent, dynamic view count you should go to the Item Details page for your story map in ArcGIS, e,g. https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=d1ef0471365e400ebb540472b477871e and look at the view count on the Overview tab on that page. If you are the owner of the item you'll also see a Usage tab that lets you see the views in graph form. To get to the Item Details page from an ArcGIS Online listing, like My Content or search results, click on the title of the item. You currently can't get to the Item Details page for a story map directly from My Stories but that's something we would like to add, not the least because of this issue. The cached view count that you see in the ArcGIS Online and My Stories listings does get updated with the most recent count occasionally. It happens if you make an edit to the item details metadata (like adding a thumbnail, brief summary and tags - which you should all be doing for your stories to make them look their best in social media and search) either directly in ArcGIS or via My Stories, or if you make an edit to the story itself. It also happens if you or someone else leaves a star rating or a comment on the item details page, which can only be done directly in ArcGIS. So one of these things probably explains why one of your view counts suddenly jumped up after not moving for sometime: either you edited the story map or its item details, or someone in ArcGIS rated it or left a comment. So to get the latest view count for a story, open its item details page. And if you want the cached value in ArcGIS Online to be updated to reflect the latest value - for example if you want your colleagues or group members to be impressed when they see your story map and its high view count in listings - then do one of the things above. For example if I am mining ArcGIS Online to find, say, the publicly shared story map about Los Angeles that has the most views: https://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=story%20maps%20los%20angeles&t=content&start=1&sortOrder=desc&sortField=numvie… I will usually open the item details pages for the ones at the top of the listing to see the latest counts. We would like to improve this so that you always see the most up-to-date value but the above is my best understanding of how it currently works. Rupert

I just saw another example of this same issue with the Facebook preview when posting a Story Map Crowdsource. The story didn't have a thumbnail, and adding the thumbnail (via My Stories) seemed to fix the issue. I'm not sure if that explains the issue, but will report back if we can track it down. Rupert

Hi Claire This isn't supported. When you make a Cascade, a cool looking cover page is part of the reader experience. Is there a particular design effect you are looking for? Rupert

Hi Venkat Sorry about this issue. It's a bug in ArcGIS Enterprise 10.5.1 that is fixed in 10.6. The workaround is to handle your images without uploading, such as referencing them via a URL or via a web service like Flickr, but we understand that those may not be appropriate for story maps that you want to share only inside an organization, where you may very well want the images to similarly only be accessible to the group and not accessible publicly or more generally. Another workaround would be to create your Org only stories using Story Map Journal instead. Rupert

Hi. sorry about the issue. Can you confirm you are using the Story Map Basic app? Also if the web map you are using in your Story Map is shared publicly could you post its URL so we can have a look, and the URL of your story. Last thing : what are you seeing in the app that shows you the search settings have been reset: for example are you not seeing a particular locator listed in the search box, or are the options you are specifying in the configuration UI not being saved correctly. Tip: It may be better to go through Esri tech support to get this resolved because depending on how your search is configured, things like different sorts of custom locators can be quite involved. I'm able to add the feature service on your Portal to a web map in ArcGIS Online: https://testing-story.maps.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=17735d3da36b49348164ad4e61da4ffd and then generate a Map Tour from it, but like you say, Map Tour uses the images hosted in ArcGIS Online rather than the ones stored as attachments in your feature service. I think this is because the two image fields in your feature service are given precedence over your attachments by Map Tour, and those fields are pointing at ArcGIS Online. You could try publishing that service without the two URL fields and see if Map Tour uses the attachments instead. If you only have two Map Tours to move, you could also just rebuild them from scratch by uploading the images again into fresh tours. It may be easier in the long run but see if the thing above works. Rupert

Hi Fuglavernd In Shortlist it isn't possible to do a text only tab so that a tab can serve as an intro or to present other info. It's a good idea though! You could assign that info to a place in your Shortlist and just have one place in the tab,but your readers will still have to click on that place in the tab, and the place will also appear on the map. There's not a way to have a tab default to showing a particular place's info panel when it opens. So there's no equivalent to the intro pic in a Story Map Tour which lets you give some context to the reader when they launch the tour without that being a place that appears on the map. I'm making a note of this because we've seen several authors trying to present this sort of additional, non-place based info in their Shortlist. It would be cool if you could configure a Shortlist tab to show the info panel for one place and for that place to not be shown on the map. Our future longer term plans for our apps is to start to combine the functionality into an integrated builder: for example that could potentially (not definitely) let you add a Map Series-type tab into a Shortlist, or a cover page to any app. Rupert

We love these self-answered posts Out-of-the-box, uncustomized Story Map Tour doesn't support popups on the supporting layers, like study area polys or hiking trail lines, in the web map. We did this to keep things simple in the limited space in the Map Tour and (dare I say it) a lot of popups in web maps aren't configured by the authors to look really great. For place based story maps though where you want to show popups for supporting layers, the Story Map Shortlist does support popups for these layers. One of the issues with this though is that some Shortlist authors are including supporting layers, like county or city boundaries, that don't have good looking popups, so perhaps they are not realizing that these popups are appearing for their readers. They could just turn off the popups for those layers in the web map if they aren't needed. If you want total out-of-the-box freedom for the popups, supporting layers and map extent/appearance for your place-based Story Map project. you could try using Story Map Journal and authoring each section manually. See this cool example from New Zealand. Rupert

Hi Eric, yes the actual deployment of the files is pretty straightforward. It's one of those things that sounds hard if you are new to it. On the Story Maps Resources page: Resources | Story Maps scroll down to the "If You're a Developer" section for some general resources about customizing the Story Map app code, including this useful Introduction to Hosting A Story Map App blog post. Note that there may be free options for hosting files on the web you can access. You can also set up the built-in ISS server on Windows-based PCs so you can at least test your customization on your machine using 'localhost'. I'm not a dev so other folks may want to pipe in on this. Rupert
