Note there are a couple of cosmetic issues you may notice when defining or changing the cover page for a side-panel Map Tour in the builder. 1. You can't use a video instead of an image for the cover page for a side panel layout. The Story Map Cascade''s cover page supports video but Story Map Tour's cover page doesn't. The Map Tour Builder will let you select a video, but when you preview or open your tour outside of the builder, you'll notice that it doesn't work. There is a message in the builder saying that video isn't supported but we don't prevent you saving your tour in this case. 2. If you are using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge, when you view the cover page configuration in the Story Map Tour, your image doesn't appear in the Builder: you just see a grey box instead of the image. This looks bad but don't worry because the image will still work, and you'll see it if you preview or open your tour in a new tab. You can replace that image in the Builder with a new one successfully: you just won't see the new image in the builder. We (actually I should really say I) somehow didn't spot that in time to fix it for this first release . We'll look to address this in the next release. 3. If your cover page image is defined via a URL link to an image (i.e. a Flickr image or an image on any server that you are referencing via a URL) and you click the little pencil icon in the top left-hand corner of the cover page image to change or review that URL, the URL isn't shown in the little dialog that popups up, Don't worry because that image will still work, and you'll see it if you preview or open your tour in a new tab. You can paste in a different URL to replace that image with a new one successfully too: You just won't see that URL in that dialog the next time you open that. This is not an issue if you are uploading your images directly into the Map Tour Builder. In that case clicking the little pencil icon in the top left-hand corner of the image lets you browse to a different image to upload: it doesn't show you a URL. We'll look to address this in the next release. Rupert

Hi Alison To add a cover page to a Map Tour using the new 'side panel' layout, first add at least a few of the points in your tour, then click the Organize button. In the dialog that appears, make sure the first place in your tour is the place that has the image and text you want to use in your cover page. Now check the 'Use the first point as a cover page' box in that dialog. You won't see your cover page in the Story Map Tour Builder in the same way that it will appear to your readers when they launch your tour. But you will see a blue button called "Cover" that you can click in the builder in order to review or edit the text and image used for your cover page. Once you have defined a cover page for your side panel Map Tour, that cover page configuration will be the first thing you see the next time you launch the Map Tour Builder to edit your tour. To see what your cover page will look like to your readers, click the Share button and either preview or open your tour. It will open in another tab so you can see what your readers will see. This is a bit hidden but we are using the same logic for cover page option in the new side panel layout in Map Tour that we use for the 'intro' picture option in the original 'three-panel' and 'integrated' layouts in the Map Tour. So if you have an existing Map Tour using one of those two original layouts and it has an 'intro' picture, that intro picture will become the cover page of that tour automatically if you switch it to use the new 'side-panel' layout. We have some FAQs about the new 'side-panel' layout for Map Tour starting here in the Story Maps FAQ page. Rupert

Hi Charlie, the easiest way to find the item details page for any publicly shared ArcGIS online item, whether it is a map, app (like a Story Map), data layer, etc, is to search for it. By definition, you'll always be able to get to the item details in ArcGIS Online for any publicly shared item in ArcGIS Online by searching, either generically at www.arcgis.com or when you are signed into your own ArcGIS Online Organization. For example here's a cool Story Map about New Orleans: APA National Planning Conference 2018 New Orleans Orientation Tour & Planners Guide http://nolagis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=9aa42e3c620046cca96a24e9d23bca1f To search for story's item details to find out who authored it and perhaps leave a comment for them, you could search ArcGIS Online for the title of that story. Alternatively, to get directly to that story's item details without seeing other entries that might have the same or a similar name, copy the appid part from the URL, type id: into the ArcGIS Online search, and then paste in the appid. This tells ArcGIS Online you want to search for specifically for that id and it will never fail to find the item for you as long as it is publicly shared and exists: https://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=id%3A9aa42e3c620046cca96a24e9d23bca1f&t=content&start=1&sortOrder=desc&sortFie… The method you mentioned above where you paste the ID into a URL is OK too and I do that instead of search because it is faster I do it so often as part of curating the Story Maps Gallery, but like Owen says it has to be a generic ArcGIS Online URL, i.e,: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=9aa42e3c620046cca96a24e9d23bca1f or a URL on the ArcGIS Online Organization you belong to, such as this URL in my case: https://story.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=9aa42e3c620046cca96a24e9d23bca1f You can't use the URL to an Organization you aren't a member of because like Owen says, that Org may not allow non-members to view item details pages, even for publicly shared items. Hope that helps. Rupert

Hi Maureen I've also not been able to reproduce this issue, If you can provide the exact steps it would be great. Story Map Tour does work a little differently than Story Map Shortlist with respect to adding locations for places. When you add a place, if its location can't be determined automatically (for example if you upload an image with geotag info), then you locate it in the Add dialog's Location tab as part of adding the place. There's not a Set Location button that gives you a crosshair tool like in Story Map Shortlist. If you bring existing images in from Flickr, the Import dialog will let you assign locations to images that don't already have geotags in Flickr, as part of the Import process. To change the location of a place in Story Map Tour, first click on that place (either click its numbered symbol on the map, or browse to that place in the tour) and then click on it and drag it to move it. Like in Shortlist, you can only edit the location of the currently selected place in Map Tour. If you get stuck or seem to lose your place on the map in Story Map Tour, do these three steps: 1: click the Settings button and in the dialog that appears go to the Extent tab, and make sure the spatial extent shown in that tab is the spatial extent you want your tour to have. This will normally be the area covering all the places in your tour. This is the extent that your readers will get taken to if they press the Home button in the map. It is also the initial extent that your readers will see when they launch your Map Tour (unless you are using the new Side Panel layout with a cover page and a zoom level set for your tour). 2: click the Save button to save your Tour. 3: reload the Story Map Tour builder by pressing Refresh in your browser, (or going to ArcGIS Online > Content > My Content or My Stories and start editing your Tour again from there. Hope that helps. Rupert

Our patch that fixes the issue with the Shortlist Builder not launching in non-English browser environments has now been released on ArcGIS Online. Prior to the update we have just made, launching Shortlist Builder to create or edit a Shortlist wouldn't work except in English, so for example this URL would fail to load: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/Shortlist/index.html?fromScratch&locale=de So I'm hoping this addresses your issue, assuming the issue above caused it Rupert

Thanks Peo, and thanks for raising this issue. Esri Technical Support has reported to us that the Shortlist Builder isn't launching if the language that the author views the web with in their browser (i.e, their browser locale) is not English. Like you say in your post, using a browser locale other than English, if you try and create a new Shortlist or edit an existing Shortlist, the Shortlist Builder hangs and fails to load. The issue doesn't affect viewing Shortlists. That is a bug on our side and we are in the process of applying a fix for this. I'll post here when the fix is applied to ArcGIS Online. I'm hoping that this solves the issue you raised. It may have been your contact with Esri Technical Support that helped us track down the issue, so thanks for doing that. Rupert

Hi Kelly In Story Map Tour, the Color tab in the Settings doesn't apply to the new 'side-panel' layout: Those color settings only apply to the original two layouts ('three-panel' and 'integrated'), so we disable that tab if you are using the side-panel layout. In the new side-panel layout, the color of the layout elements: header, the cover page banner, and the panel where the captions appear, is fixed in our design. So, for example you can't change the color of the header at the top of the layout like you can in the other Map Tour layouts: we use black for the side-panel layout's header, so it matches the appearance of the header in the Story Map Cascade app. We could relax this restriction in a future release if it is something that a lot of people would like to be able to set, but for this first release we aimed to unify the look of the side-panel layout. Hope that helps. Rupert

Hi, Shortlist doesn't support this for the layer(s) in the web map that contain the places you are displaying in the tabs. It does support this if your layer is a supporting layer that has also been added to the map, but which is not one that contains the places shown in the tabs. Rupert

Hi, this could be caused by a few things. For example the layer(s) in the map may have been unshared for some reason. Or the permission/role on your account may have been changed. We recommend checking your story map in: My Stories | Story Maps It may be best to check with Esri Tech Support who can help walk you through what may be causing this. Rupert

Hi Mike I see what you mean. Crowdsource won't let you do that. You are really talking about data entry, update and editing. Story Maps aren't designed to be apps for data editing. There are other configurable apps that are set up for that though. In particular see the Crowdsource Reporter, GeoForm, Basic Viewer and Edit apps you'll see listed here: Choose a configurable app—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS . In ArcGIS Online, to gather data you'll set up a feature service so it can be edited, and then add it to a map. You can then use that map in configurable apps like the ones above. See also the Help on editing features on this part of the ArcGIS Online help: Create maps, scenes, and apps—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS Hope that helps Rupert

When you say the web map has evolved, I wanted to check if the web map has just been updated, or do you want to switch to a different web map. The Story Map apps automatically show the web map as-is, so the latest changes will be reflected on the map you see in the story. To switch to a different web map, in the Story Map Series builder, go the tab or section you want to edit, click Edit, then in the Edit dialog that appears click the Map dropdown list and choose the Select a Map options.
