In case you're asking about side-loading in general, a good place to start is the "Go Offline" section of the Collector documentation: Go offline—Collector for ArcGIS | ArcGIS You might also want to take a look at the "Using your own Basemap layers with Collector for ArcGIS": Using your own Basemap layers with Collector for ArcGIS | ArcGIS Blog Otherwise, hopefully my replay above to Ron Knepper covers what you need?

Most of the time we are working with our own imagery. We use Desktop to create tile packages of that imagery, and then side-load those tile packages. For ESRI basemaps, the overall workflow is to set-up the project up on one device for offline use, then use side-loading to copy the basemap tile package from that device to all the other devices. The basic steps for an iOS device are: Configure your web map in ArcGIS Online for offline use. Download the web map in Collector on a device, during which you will be asked to specify the ESRI basemap's Work Area (or extent) and Map Detail (or maximum resolution or zoom level). In iTunes, select your Device, then navigate to its Apps settings screen, then scroll down to the File Sharing section. Locate the Collector app in the list, select it, and on the right you'll see the list of "Collector documents" on your device. Select the Basemaps folder in that list of documents, and click on the "Save to..." button near the bottom right of the screen. The Basemaps folder you just saved on your computer will contain folders for all the basemaps you currently have stored on your mobile device. So if you have more than one basemap on your device, then you'll need to figure out which one is the one you want. Inside each basemaps' folder is the Tile Package or .tpk file for that basemap. This is the file you want to copy to all your other devices. I usually rename the .tpk file to something more meaningful, as that is the name that will show up in Collector's Basemap menu when you are selecting a basemap to use. Proceed with your other devices, using iTunes to side-load the above tile package to your other devices. You can follow the standard side-loading directions to do this. Basically it is just the reverse of above, attach a device, goto the Apps settings screen, down to the File Sharing section, select Collector, and now use "Add.." to copy the .tpk file to the new device. If you are using Android devices, then it's pretty much the same thing. You just use your file browser, instead of iTunes, to copy around the appropriate tile package. Hope that helps!

We often find ourselves in a similar situation, and we usually leave the GPS on, so that it pans the map to the general vicinity of where we want to collect the data. When we go to collect an actual feature, we simply drag the location from where the GPS placed it to the correct location, based on our own high-resolution aerial photo we're using a basemap. If you traveling a distance between locations -- at least the scale of the map -- we find it helpful and saves a bit of time to have the GPS get us close to the right place and do the panning and zooming work for us. Also, even though we are operating online, we still find the performance is better when you have the high-resolution aerial photo stored locally on the device as your basemap. As our imagery is usually quite large, we leverage the side-loading approach to quickly and easily get it on the devices, rather than downloading it over wifi to each one.

You can also toggle an apps' access to the camera on or off via the device's Settings. Go to Settings --> Privacy --> Camera, and look for Collector in the list. As you discovered, apps only ask that question once. After that, you have to go to the Settings page to change your answer. Note also that an app will not be shown in that Settings list until AFTER you have answered that question.

We are mostly an iOS shop, however, I'll see if I can find an Android device or two with which to test. Is there a list of suggested enterprise login solutions and their reliability with Collector? Should we be considering something else besides Shibboleth? There was a bug in Collector and Explorer last summer which prevented us completely from using Shibboleth logins online or offline. Is using ArcGIS built-in store the only reliable way to go at this point for user and role management? Thanks! -peter

Is there a standard timeout for credentials obtained for offline use of Collector when used with enterprise logins, in our case we are using Shibboleth? How long is the authentication good for that you obtain when you are online, after you switch to using Collector offline? It seems that some of our users who spend enough time in the field offline -- something more than one day, but it's not clear -- can no longer access their maps. If Collector is being used offline and it crashes, a user powers their iPad off/on, or the iPad is soft reset because of problems with Collector or other apps, then Collector picks up again just fine, but only if the user last logged in online only a couple hours beforehand. If they have gone longer than a day (or maybe it's more), then Collector breifly flashes the view of the maps and then resets to the login screen, and leaves them stuck with no access to their maps; they're offline, so they have no way of logging in again. This is with Collector 10.2.7 and 10.3 on iOS. Thanks! -peter

I left a copy of the original problematic Map Journal at: http://umich.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/?appid=f5adefea12414083b8b75a337c2edd62 If that helps you troubleshoot where the builder is letting the user go wrong. Thanks. -peter

I was able to get the above Map Journal working by using the ArcGIS Online Assistant to delete the last section the student had added to the map. To delete that section I removed: { "title": ... ... ... ... "contentActions": [], "creaDate": 1428554887286, "pubDate": 1428554887286, "status": "PUBLISHED", "media": { "type": "video", "video": { "url": "//www.youtube.com/embed/21OXQ4m1-Bo?wmode=opaque", "type": "video", "display": "fit" } } } This was the last section in the Map Journal, so there was no comma after the final brace above. If I was removing an earlier section, then I suppose the comma would need to go as well.

I have a class using Story Maps for a group project, both Map Tours and Map Journals. A couple of the students have reached a point with adding content to Map Journals where they are now failing to open. The error displayed when trying to view or edit their Map Journal is, "Something went wrong, the Map Journal did not load correctly." Is there any way to recover from this error, without having the students start over with a new map? I've checked the permissions on the maps, and the Map Journal is shared publicly. If the Map Journal incorporates other Story Maps, or other web maps, I've verified that they are all shared publicly. I've tried copying the map with the ArcGIS Online Assistant, and that copy fails the same way. Is there someplace to look for more information on what is causing the error? Is there something one can edit in the Map Journal's JSON (via ArcGIS Online Assistant) to remove whatever is causing the error? Here is the URL for one of the problematic Map Journals: http://umich.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/?appid=cfb7b67614d54c09803b850ee90937d0 Thanks! -peter

I should mention that I'm seeing this problem in both Chrome 41.0.2272.89m on a Windows 7 machine and Safari 8.0.3 on a Mac OS 10.10.2.

I am attempting to embed audio in a Map Tour caption following the instructions here: Adding audio to your story map map tours | ArcGIS Blog It appears to work fine when I cut-and-paste the code block from the example into one of my map's captions. The audio control appears, and I can play the horse sound just fine. I then save the changes. When I go to re-open the map, however, all the html code has disappeared from the description. Other text I had in the caption remains, but the whole <audio> section is gone. Is this a bug? Is there a different way to include an audio file with player in the caption for a Map Tour point? Thanks! -peter

Thanks, Gregory! That worked. Is there a way to use the ArcGIS Online Assistant with enterprise logins? I seem to only be able to login to Assistant using an ArcGIS Online account, which I've added to our organization.
