I figured this out on my own. There's probably a better way to do this, but this is what I do (using Desktop Basic). I wanted a layer on AGOL that contained a domain where I could change the color of the symbol to indicate an inspection. I had 5 colors, a Null (not visited), Good, Marginal, Needs Repaired, and Needs Replace 1. After adding the domain to my hydrant layer, and using the "catagories with unique values" to show the colors, I created a layer package within Arc Desktop by right clicking on the layer name, and selecting "create layer package". 2. I drag and drop this layer package into a new blank map. This gets me around having to fix some errors in my original .mxd map. I should fix them, but time is always an issue for me. 3. Create a service definition by going to "File", "Share as", and select "service". Then choose "save as service definition file." Follow the on-screen prompts. You have be logged in to your AGOL account to complete this. Save to a specific spot. 4. From AGOL upload the service definition and it should also convert it to a featured service layer. The Domain should remain after upload. Add the layer into you map and your users should be able to change the colors when editing each symbol.

We are using Collector with an external GNSS receiver to gather points on water line repairs, hydrants, valves, etc. After we have gathered additional points or updated points, I would like to take the updated layer from AGOL and update/replace the layer on our local machine that's running desktop basic. So I connect to the hosted services from within Arc Desktop, add that layer to the local desktop. I then create a Local Copy for Editing and disconnect that copy from the server. I now have the layer on my local machine and the domain structure is preserved. So I have two layers that are the identical in arc desktop. The copied layer is the up-to-date layer from AGOL. The one contained on the local machine is the original, out-of-date layer. I want to simply replace or write over the out-of-date info with the up-to-date info. The old layer is in a geodatabase on our server that contains many layers, and the new layer is contained in a geodatabase on my C: drive. What's the best way to replace the old with the new and still maintain the Domain? I have tried importing the disconnected layer by right clicking within the "master" geodatabase in arc desktop and clicking import, and that works, but I loose the symbols and also the domain information. The layer is a Hydrant layer that we use for inspection and we change the color of the hydrant symbol to indicate whether the hydrant is Good, Marginal, needs Repair, or Replaced. Just trying to figure this workflow out and make it simple. water systems agol tools collector gnss water utilites Thanks for any help. Travis

Thank you for your replies. I believe it was my mistake. I had a map with some layers, and then created another map and used one of those same layers (valves). I then changed the settings in that layer and it disabled the option of being able to download it. Thank you both for your help.

I was previously able to take maps offline that I created on ArcGIS Online. Now, when I go into Collector the cloud icon that allows you to download the map is gone. If I view the map settings on AGOL, the "Offline Mode" is not shown. The only difference that I can think of is I used to have a free account because we had the yearly maintenance program. We then purchased 5 user account license, but the original account is still one of the 5 and is the administrator. I created a new map, and the "Offline Mode" is shown in the settings with the check box shown. If I enable Offline with this map, that Offline option is available in Collector. Anyone else experience this? I know this is sort of unique. I'm just trying to avoid having to rebuild my maps. Any help is greatly appreciated. I guess I'm just rying to figure out why the entire "Offline Mode" is missing from my basemap.

Jaimie, I should have also said by publishing it through the File, Share As, Service within ArcMap, I believe it retains the domain contained in each field. Thus you would have the drop down of "Pass" or "Fail" in that field. I think anyway. Travis

Thanks for the reply Jaime. Here's where I'm at at the moment. I'm still trying to plug along. I created a new field in my Hydrant layer called Inspected and set the data type to text. I then created a new domain and added the two codes Yes and No. Then under the field properties of the layer Hydrant I added that new domain. Now in ArcMap I have drop down menu where I can select yes or no if it's been inspected. Once you publish the file to use in Collector, I think you should be able to use the field value of "Yes" or "No" to change the color. There's an option in the symbol settings in AGOL to change the color based on that value (yes or no). It's would be similar to the "draw categories based on unique value" in symbololgy tab under a layers properties. The part where I'm stuck now is if I export that layer from ArcMap as a shapefile and upload and publish that to AGOL, I loose all my domains. I'm not sure if I could upload a different file format to retain them or not. It appears that the solution, or more correct way of doing this is to upload the file to AGOL by using "File, Share As, Service within ArcMap. I'm not exactly sure what all that publishes. I don't know if you can select individual layers, or if it publishes all the layers contained in the Contents of your map. I haven't got that far because I have some errors in my mapping and I have to resolve those before it will let me publish the service. And I'm not sure how to resolve all the errors that I have so I'm now off on another tangent screwing with that. I did see this article which sounds like what you are trying to do with tables and such. I pasted the link below. Hopefully it helps you out. Luci, Yes. I have done that. I created a Domain with the option of Yes, or No, but I’m not sure how to keep that drop down menu available when I upload them to AGOL and try to use them on collector. All of the fields are available but nothing that was contained in the Domain. I’m not sure what file type I would need to export it as to maintain the functionality of the domain choices. Thanks for your help Luci. Travis

I'm a novice when it comes to ArcMap and Collector so hopefully one of you folks can help me out with this. We are water utility in Ohio and are developing (rather slowly) a hydrant and valve inspection and maintenance program. We currently use Collector, iPad and an EOS Arrow 100 external receiver to gather field data and so far things have worked fairly well. I would like to use Collector to facilitate in our hydrant and valve inspections. What I would like to do is create a way for the field staff to be able to change the color of a hydrant or valve once it has been inspected. If I would tap on the hydrant and see the attribute window display, is there a way to create a drop down arrow or something similar to change the color to indicate that it has been inspected or that it needs replaced, etc.? Visually, the field staff and office staff could quickly access what has or hasn't been inspected. Thanks for you help. Travis

Nick, After looking a little closer, this is what I discovered. I pasted a screen shot below. This seems to be what you were talking about. I assume this error that I'm receiving has something to do with that check mark on the "Coordinates include Z values". I'm not sure why it is grayed out. I'm also using Desktop Basic so I'm not sure if that's the reason or not. This error only occurs if I try to take a point while using an Offline map in Collector. It seems to be the only layer that we have in our mapping that has this checked. I tried using the Copy Feature command in Data Management and Disabling the Z values in the output, but it does away with all the existing points in that layer. Not sure what to try except creating a new layer and adding the existing points back in. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply Nick. This particular data set has no z values. I don’t know where this error has come from. I have had this data on my map for months and then all of a sudden I have an error involving z values. I think I will delete the layer, and then reload it to the site and see what happens. Thanks.

I am using the latest version of Collector with an iPad Air (iOS 9.2.1), and an Arrow 100 external receiver. I am using a offline map and everything seems to be fine. When I try to add a point in a layer called "locate" and then hit the submit button, I get an error saying "The shape must have a Z value". Using a different layer, I can gather a point and submit it with no problem. If I delete the offline map, and then use the map with data access, I can gather the point in the layer "locate" and submit it without any problems. I do not have any requirement to gather a z value. I'm not even sure what this "Z" pertains to. I assume an elevation maybe. I wouldn't even know how to require this. I uploaded this layer from Arcmap 10.3 Basic several months ago and haven't changed anything. I can't say if this error would have been there since the original upload or not. We are new to Collector so I'm not sure if anyone has tried taking a point in this layer up till now, or not. Any thoughts? Would I just be best to delete the layer and upload it again? Thanks Travis
