Brian, I appreciate and and all comments/suggestions/advice. So we may not know all the directions we are going but we do know some things that would help us where we are right now and that's where we suspect Server is the right approach (at least, I think that's the correct path). We will be wanting to post a lot of data to AGOL and we will want to be able to update that data on a somewhat regular basis. It would be ideal if the updates could come from desktop ArcGIS or from AGOL (and therefore update each other, if that makes sense). I presume that is one advantage of having Server. I am not too concerned about the credits for the moment (and we do have the regular beginning allotment of credits). As for the secure services, maybe this is not the best approach. Maybe I need to just think about having named users in my organization that are allowed access to a 'group' of maps in my content that only the group can see (and these would not be public groups, per se). What my users would like to do is, update web maps and have those updates reflected on the desktop/server end (and vice versa). I do not like the wasted efficiency in having to make updates in both places since there is a high chance of error. In any case, I really appreciate the advice as this is getting me further along in the decision-making process (though things are still cloudy!). Thanks, Adrian EDITED to add: yes, the labels... Labels have 'improved' in AGOL but are still virtually useless unless you have something super simple and no one cares about style. In this world, no one wants super simple anymore...

Hi Lizeth, Have you considered using a WMS (Web mapping service) in IDV as opposed to downloading a basemap? It looks like IDV can utilize WMS, if you can obtain the proper URL to that particular WMS. Unidata IDV User Guide | Web Map Server(WMS)/Background Image Control

Hi Matthew, This sounds like it might be a projection issue. When you first dealt with your original data in ArcMap, were you able to verify that things looked "normal" to you? Meaning that the spatial data was where it was supposed to be initially? The way I do this is to add a simple basemap behind my data just to visually check this. I would also attempt to validate the data after the geoprocessing as well to see if it is where it is supposed to be. If your initial data is not appearing in the right place then you may have to mess with the coordinate systems of your data to make sure it is being projected properly.

Hi Jacob. Consider using a Map Package. This way it keeps things together that you want together and you can choose whether or not you want to include Enterprise geodatabase data. Take a look at this article: http://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/map/working-with-arcmap/creating-a-map-package.htm

Hi Keith, I really appreciate the response. We currently have a Server Workgroup Standard license for 10.4. That likely is as far as we will go until the owners of the company see more value (which will take a long time). To give a little more background, we're a small Utah-based engineering and surveying firm. We work a lot with local government projects but primarily with the State of Utah's DOT. We will be producing data for the State that we will want to host on our AGOL subscription. We will also want to be able to have this data easily updated, which seems to be something we could utilize with Server. We will also need some secure services due to some private info (that we do not want the public to see). The first hurdle is that we do not have a dedicated server that I can deploy our Server license to. I was thinking of just testing stuff with my local PC but that seems like it may be a little wasteful and I'm afraid of publishing stuff and having it break due to the PC not always being on. In any case, I think there are still more things we need to figure out and just storing stuff "in the cloud" through AGOL does not seem to be the best approach for us for now. We want to have Map Services instead of Feature Services (in order to utilize labels appropriately). I like the links that you share, those will help us with our decisions. Thanks again, Adrian

Brian, I really appreciate the response and this is good info. Server workgroup was purchased prior to me starting at this company and it is still unclear on our exact needs (unfortunately). I fully understand about being considered an “IT” person just because “I know computers”. But, I’m sure everyone has gone through this and for the most part, us “IT” people have helped fix a few things (like, did you restart your PC???, etc.). I finally did call my Esri sales rep and it just left me more confused than before. I suppose my company does not know exactly what we need or where we think we are going, so there are problems there. The Esri rep I talked to said that if we wanted to use Secure Services and have people outside of my organization access these services, then we would have to upgrade to the ‘higher’ version of Server that involves “Application Service Provider” and would cost waaaaay much more than my company would ever shell out. From talking with the Esri guy, it sounds like my first steps might be just to install the Server Workgroup and kind of see what we can do from there (though, first we need to get a dedicated server, or go with Amazon web services or so). And… with Server Workgroup Standard license, I can only use a MS SQL Server Express. So that really isn’t an option for now. Again, thanks for your help and suggestions. I really do appreciate it. Cheers, Adrian

To build on to what Chris Donohue, GISP was saying (utilizing a batch process to convert your shapefiles into geodatabase), there are some resources online you could utilize (or build a model through ModelBuilder and/or utilize a Python script to do this). Here is a very old 'resource' I found from Esri's site to do this (assuming it still works): Convert shapefiles and coverages to a geodatabase in batch mode Or, here is a blog post that describes a simple way: Migrating your existing data into the Geodatabase | ArcGIS Blog

There doesn't seem to be a lot of support for Foxpro with ArcGIS. From looking through past forums, some questions were never answered and others had solutions that didn't work out: How to join a external  database table for a feature class by a common key field (there are links to arcscripts that appear to not really work?) Maybe take a look at this article from Esri. It's for a much older version of ArcGIS but it may be helpful: 17152 - Unable to preview certain FoxPro tables in ArcCatalog using an OLE DB connection

Hi Phyllis, Can you list the exact steps you are taking to make it crash? Is it only crashing on certain tools? Are there any error messages that you are receiving when the crash happens? If the problem keeps happening, maybe performing a full uninstall and a fresh install might help, unfortunately. Beyond that (if it still isn't working), there are some pretty extensive things you can do in order to 'make things work' again (see this thread: Uninstalling/reinstalling Version 10.1 ) Though, I would consult with Esri support before going that far.
