No, it works seamlessly for the end user. There are documented ways to create backups, but we run in our whole GIS in a VMware environment with real-time replication to an offsite location, so we haven't bothered. We still use traditional backups for SDE though. Some habits are hard to break This page is worth a read What is ArcGIS Data Store?—Portal for ArcGIS (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server

As an early adopter of portal, I can attest to the speed benefit of using the Data Store over an SDE database, The one downside, and it's minor if you pull the data in through portal, is that the Data Store Database is not SDE, and it's not able to be connected to like an SDE-enabled database, at least as I've found.

It sounds like a folder permissions issue on the host machine, make sure the account that Portal and ArcGIS Server are running on have read/write on the respective directories.

Ravin, You have to have Web Adapter installed for Portal to work. About the ArcGIS Web Adaptor—Portal for ArcGIS (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server first line specifies: ArcGIS Web Adaptor is a required component of Portal for ArcGIS... It sounds like you skipped the following steps outline here: About the initial administrator account—Portal for ArcGIS (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server Portal does not let you go any further until you setup the initial Administrator account. In addition, Portal does not run on IIS, you need a web adapter to run in IIS that serves as a reverse proxy to Portal. I also see you're using IE, i've had mixed results with IE and Portal setup playing well together, I'd consider using Firefox or Chrome.

That's the easiest way I've found to set ArcGIS Server up, with public shared folders and private shared folders.

Hey Ismael, thanks for the help thus far. I noticed that it's only supporting the baked in authentication right now. Any ETA on SAML / ADFS authentication being supported?

I have professional services coming in at the end of September, I've been running the most current 1.x version for 6 months now. It'll be of interest to see what the results will be when we migrate to the new architecture. The one thing I would consider is using multiple machines per cluster in the site, this will give you the failover you're looking for.

As far as federation, unless you're making portal accessible to your employees off-site, you can just share everything to public and only users on your domain will be able to use the Portal site.

You sure can, just select My Hosted Services when you select which connection to publish to, then you'll get the options you get on ArcGIS Online.

Thanks for posting, I hadn't caught the change either. I've been running four 2 core, 16 gb machines for 2 years now without issues, but i'll look at performance since updating to 10.3.1.

In the config.js file, there's a variable called sceneViewerEnabled, change it to false and restart your portal. This page will help you find the file in question: Setting advanced portal options—Portal for ArcGIS (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server You should be good to go!

Hi Camilla, As James said, a mosaic would most likely be your best option, but it's not available at the basic level. You could try some general house keeping like calculating statistics and building pyramids if you haven't already. More than likely, you're going to have to work with less images at a time though, 200+ DEM's would be a challenge for any 32 bit application to render. Keep in mind that you can run multiple instances of ArcMap on one machine too.

As Derek said above, Seneca has been using Portal successfully across our entire enterprise for a little over a year now. We have ours configured for onsite and offsite access for our employees. Portal was fairly straight forward to deploy, and many of the hiccups we had a year ago have been resolved, either through bug fixes or major improvements to documentation. Portal serves as our spatial backbone, we are running several applications, both esri and 3rd party, that rely on the data provided. We have about a 75% user rate currently, with the majority of those people using it everyday.
