Hi Wei, One possibility: if you run the model from the ModelBuilder window, you don't get geoprocessing results (see first paragraph of A quick tour of creating a geoprocessing package). You have to run the model as a geoprocessing tool as in Exercise 7D. Another possibility: if you ran the model as a tool but didn't save the map document where the model outputs were displayed, you would also not get geoprocessing results. As long as you saved the map document (Lesson7.mxd) you should be able to find geoprocessing results under the heading Previous Session in the Results window. If neither of these explanations is the right one, let us know and we'll keep working on it. Tim Ormsby

Hi John, I haven't been able to reproduce your problem with IE9. I did notice that the error message you attached said "This file is too large to import and display in your web browser (Internet Explorer 7 or 8)." Just want to make doubly sure you're using IE9. I'll try and find out from ArcGIS Online people here if they're aware of problems with IE9 failing to import shapefiles. In the meantime, see how things go with Chrome or Firefox. If you like, send us your parks shapefile (and the others too if you want) as an email attachment to UnderstandingGIS at esri dot com. Hi Jill, On the previous step in the book (Step 4J p. 266) when it says, [INDENT]"Rename the output element of the Buffer (3) tool to Park Access Zones"[/INDENT] you did rename the green element, right? Previously it would have said "Recommended Sites_Buffer" or something like that. I'm just wondering if possibly you renamed the tool (the yellow icon) rather than the output element. If it's not as simple as that, could you send me a couple of screen shots showing what your model looks like and what you see when you open the Spatial Join tool? Hi Madhur, The video tutorials are supplements to a book called "Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Project Workbook." The book includes the working files on a DVD as well as a download code for a trial copy of the software (180 days). The videos are based on the first edition of the book which was published in 2011. There is now a second edition published in 2013. The videos are still quite relevant, but if you buy the book, you should be sure to buy the second edition. You can get the book directly from Esri or from Amazon. The working files are not publicly available except with the book. Let us know if you have more questions. Tim Ormsby

Settings on the Measure tool in ArcGIS Online revert to the default (like area measurement and square miles) when you close the tool. I'd like the tool to remember the last settings you made and use those when you reopen the tool. Here's the thing: you may want to make several measurements of the same kind--like several distance measurements in feet--but you don't want to make them continuously. I mean you want to do other things in between your measurements. That means you have to close the Measure box. Then when you reopen it, you have to reapply your settings. It would also be nice if you could set some preferences on the Measure tool. Distance measurements only have one decimal point of precision. It would be nice if you could change this to two or three--especially for measurements made in miles.

The requested functionality seems similar to what you can get in ArcGIS for Desktop using My Places--basically a list of named map extents which is independent of any particular map but can be loaded into any map. I wonder if it would be possible to create a unique Bookmark item type for ArcGIS Online. New entries could be saved to this item from any web map and this item could be added to any web map to populate a list of bookmarks. The item could be edited directly by its owner (for example, to remove, rename, or reorder entries).

I agree. I might want to list bookmarks alphabetically, or by increasing map scale, or something else. I can't plan ahead of time what all my bookmarks are going to be to make this come out right. A Move Up/Move Down command or drag up/drag down functionality would be very nice. I've actually found myself in the position of deleting and recreating bookmarks just to get them sorted in the order I want.

Hi, I'd like to be able to remove features from the display (i.e., filter them out) interactively. Suppose I've narrowed down a layer of potentially suitable sites (parcels) with attribute filters. I'm visually inspecting the remaining sites against an imagery basemap and I can see that some of them are no good--maybe too close to a freeway or on a steep slope. Or maybe I've geoenriched them and I don't like their demographics or something. In ArcMap, I could interactively select these bad sites, switch the selection, and create a layer from selected features. It would be nice to have equivalent functionality in ArcGIS Online. Like if you could select multiple features on the map (why can't you do this if you remove pop-ups?) and then in the Table Options have a choice to Hide Selected Features or something like that.

Hi, sorry about the problems. Issue A) I assume you're using the first edition of the book (based on the page numbers you gave). This edition is designed to work with version 10.0 of the software, where the Maplex label engine was an extension. At version 10.1, Maplex became part of the core software. So probably you're using version 10.1 or 10.2 of the software and that's why you don't see the extension. Follow these steps instead: In the table of contents, right-click the name of the data frame (Site 1) and choose Properties. On the Data Frame Properties dialog box, click the General tab. At the bottom of the tab, set the Label Engine dropdown list to Maplex Label Engine. Click OK. Issue B) I think the reason why the outline on the feature stays blue is that the feature is selected. On p. 304, Step 2D, where you right-click on the record in the table to zoom to the feature, the feature isn't supposed to be selected. But if you left-click first, you'll select the feature. It will be highlighted in blue in the table and on the map. Try this: In the table of contents, under the Site 1 data frame, right-click the RecommendedSites layer and choose Open Attribute Table. Assuming a record is selected, right-click the small gray box at the left edge of the record and choose Select/Unselect. Close the table. The feature on the map should look yellow. If these aren't the right solutions, write back and let us know. Thanks, Tim

I'm frustrated by how hard it is to discover and communicate with the author of an ArcGIS Online hosted web application. I don't know if it's true for every template, but it's true for many of them, that nowhere on the web app do you see who made it. This is an issue when the map is trying to show authoritative data (e.g., Health Insurance Marketplace Premiums for 2014) that you have questions about and it's an issue when the map is telling a personal-interest story and you just want to say hey, there's a big fat typo on one of your captions. I guess if the mapmaker is thoughtful enough they can include contact information in the map description or something that gets exposed in the app, but it seems like most of the time they don't. Why don't we facilitate this by building in a contact name and email address as part of the configuration of every template? People could omit it if they wanted to, but at least it would be there to encourage them. Right now, it's like if you want to get in touch with the author, you have to go to a lot of trouble. Search for the source web map(s) that the app is based on, leave a comment, and then check back to see if the comment was even read. Or see if the author has included contact information in their user profile, which it seems like they usually haven't. I don't even bother with this whole process because it's too much work. Ultimately, it would be great if there were some kind of ArcGIS Online messaging system that users could opt into, but in the absence of that, it would be nice if we took some steps to make feedback and communication more dependable and effective. I also forgot to ask a basic question: what version of ArcGIS for Desktop are you using? 10.0? Another possible cause is that you don't have a current service pack for the software. Instructions for finding out what service pack you have are at this page: http://training.esri.com/campus/catalog/softwareversion/SoftwareVersionText.cfm Service pack updates are available at this page: http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks But maybe you already took care of this when you reinstalled the software. I found a colleague here who had the same problem a couple of years ago. He said that he dealt with it by turning the Transportation sublayer off, which--at least in his case--avoided the black screen problem. It's not the happiest solution, but it would be an easy thing to try. Tim

Hi Gregory, it doesn't look to me like there should be any problems with your system configuration. There is a utility you can run to confirm that you meet all systems requirements. It's available from this page: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/system-requirements/10.2/index.html#. Scroll down to the Hardware requirements section, and in the Video/Graphics adaptor box, you'll see a link to "Check your computer's ability to run ArcGIS." It's fast and easy, although you need a current Java plug-in. One piece of advice I got from tech support was to make sure your graphics driver is current, so I think this test is worthwhile. You're probably sick of jumping through hoops at this point, but one more idea I had--because I'm still confused about why you see an old version of the Imagery basemap--is to clear your ArcMap cache and see if that helps. From the Customize menu in ArcMap, click ArcMap Options, click the Display Cache tab, and click Clear Cache. Relatively painless (compared to reinstalling the software). I am waiting for an email response from some other tech support guys, so a better idea may still come along. But try these two suggestions and if it's still no good, send me an email at [email protected] and we'll keep pursuing it. Again, really sorry for the difficulties and the trouble it's putting you to. Tim

Hi, Sorry for this problem. It has occasionally happened to others, but it's not quite clear what causes it. Here are some suggestions: First: make sure hardware acceleration is enabled. To do this, from the Customize menu, choose ArcMap Options. Click the Data View tab. If necessary, check the box to enable hardware acceleration for supported layers. Second: remove the Streets basemap from the map document. I don't think it's needed anymore in the exercise and see if that helps. If not... Third: remove the Imagery basemap from the map document, then add it again. See if that works. If not... Fourth: Replace the version of the Imagery basemap you're using with the current version of Imagery or Imagery with Labels from the Add Basemap window. From the screen captures you sent, it looks like you recreated an older version of the Imagery basemap... perhaps by adding a layer package from ArcGIS Online? The current version doesn't have sublayers for Boundaries and Places or Transportation. If you add the current Imagery basemap from the Add Basemap window, this may perform better. (Although your screen won't exactly match the images in the book.) Let us know if any of that helps. I have also contacted Tech Support to see if they can give some additional information, as I noticed that this same issue was reported to them in 2011. If they have some other ideas, I will post them as soon as I find out. Tim
