Hm... how are the roads digitized? From the crusher point outwards? You mentioned that "the measures of each new haul road begin with the value taken from the point of intersection with existing haulroads." So each haul road has it's own route identifier, and the m-value at the beginning of each route should start at 0?

Have you looked at the Attachments toolbox? There are tools in there for creating match tables that can be used to assign features attachments.

I'm not aware of any other styles specific to geology. I'm not sure if you've already reviewed this option, but you can create your own styles for symbology. This can be done with point, line, or polygon symbologies.

So you'd like to simple merge the two datasets, so that you'd have one layer with both sets of data? If so, you can use the Merge or Append tool, which will combine two or more datasets. You can play with the field mapping section to manage fields between the datasets. If you want to combine data from their geographic position, you can look into the Intersect tool. If I'm missing your actual objective, let me know so we can consider other options.

Have you looked into creating separate label classes for the different feature groups you want to label within the line feature class? You can create separate labels for highway shields, major roads, minor roads, etc.

You don't need XY information in the text file; the equivalent of the XY information would be the route ID to determine which stream the station is located on and the distance along the specific route that the station falls on. That information represents the geographic location of the points. It looks like the RM values are the length along the river that the stations are at and the WSE values are the elevation? Here are some steps you can follow to create points from your data: 1) Create two fields: a From_Field and To_Field 2) Since your text file has route measurements in miles, calculate a 0 for the From_Field and use the Calculate Geometry function and calculate the length of the route in Miles for the To_Field. 3) Use the Create Routes tool to create a route using the Reach as the Route Identifier field, the Two_Fields as the Measure Source and specify the From and To Measure fields accordingly. 4) The output should automatically be added to the map, so right click on your Excel file in ArcMap and go to Display Route Events. 5) Make sure the Route Reference is set to your new route layer, the Route Identifier is Reach for the first section. 6) Set the Route Identifier in the second section to Reach. 7) Leave the type of events to point and set the Measure to the RM field. The output is a feature layer, so it doesn't reside anywhere on disk. Right click and export it to a shapefile to save it.

Do your river stations have measurement values for where they fall on the stream, and do you have some sort of stream ID field in both the river features and text file? If so, it sounds as if you can just create routes from your river features and then use the Locate Features Along Routes tool to create station points that fall on the river features. If that's not possible can you provide a sample of your data?

What service pack are you on? Can you add a basemap from a GIS Server connection? 1) In ArcCatalog, expand the GIS Server folder. 2) Double click on Add ArcGIS Server and select Use GIS Services at the screen that appears 3) For the URL, enter http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services 4) Once the connection has been made, either use the Add Data button or drag and drop the basemap you'd like to use into the map.

Are you on 10 or 10.1? Style files need to be in the appdata folder, as they need to be linked to the account you're logged in with, so you "update" a style file rather saving a new one. The dialog is to "Open" a style file, rather than "Save" one, so you don't save a new style file. You should browse to the one you have in that folder location, (it should be set by default), and then you'll save a new style in the style file. You can then browse to this style file through Windows Explorer. Make sure the App Data folder is visible by going to Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Aside from style files, you can also save the symbology as a layer file. Right click on the layer in your map and go to Save as layer file. This layer file stores the symbology you've used for the layer, and you can move this layer file to a place on your network.
