Have you included the references to these other css files in the HTML code? That would be something like
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/iPhone.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/pavement.css">
I guess I don't know exactly how stylesheets work. You can reference more than one and they won't conflict?

I downloaded the Simple Map Viewer template and have been poking around in the html and css files. I can't seem to figure out where I need to be making changes in order to see them in the application with regard to layout, padding, colors, etc. In the html file there is this bit
<!--Use protocol relative urls that way if the browser is viewing the page via HTTPS the js/css file will be requested using the HTTPS protocol--> <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://community.esri.com//js.arcgis.com/3.9/js/dojo/dijit/themes/tundra/tundra.css"> <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://community.esri.com//js.arcgis.com/3.9/js/esri/css/esri.css"> <!--Load any application specific styles--> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/main.css">
and I feel like this is an important area but I only see changes when I change the css file on the last line. The template comes with a few css files but not all of them change anything. the iPhone.css and the pavement.css files make some pretty big changes, but then when I go to edit those css files, those changes don't show up on the page. Am I trying to edit in the right places?

Hi Michael, Make sure you have the other .js, .css, etc files with the associated index.html. Your index.html file appears to be correct. I've zipped up the other files that are needed to have the application work. You can extract this to your C:\inetpub\wwwroot folder, and then access the application by going to: http://<server name>/BasicViewer I had all the template files in the right directory, there must have just been an error somewhere in my code. I did like another poster suggested and just wiped it all out and started over and it works fine now. I only use Linux so C:\ isn't an option 🙂 Thanks for the help everyone, this is an interesting way to learn to work with JavaScript but I am starting to get the hang of it. Now off to download and try out some of the other JS templates!

So I downloaded the "Basic Viewer" JavaScript template and extracted it all into the "www" directory on my web server. I edited the .html with my AGOL webmap id as well as a couple other fields like title, owner, description, etc. yet all I get when I go to the page is a blank browser. Is there more I need to do? I read about a configuration file (other than the commonConfig.js and the configuration_panel.js) but I don't know where that is or what to do with it if I find it... I have attached my index file. Thanks everyone!

I want to use a file path as a link in my pop ups but instead of opening the file (an image) in a browser I want to open it up in an image viewing application. Is this possible? I read in another thread to place "file:" before the path but this didn't work for me. Thanks everyone!

Did you georeference then use the Rectify... menu? If so, did you leave the No Data value at its default of 256? If so, your output raster was saved as a 16bit tif. To display it properly, build statistics or change/remove stretch in the layer properties->symbology tab. Alternatively, set NoData to 0 when exporting and your tif will be saved as 8 bit and should display properly. The different associated files are nothing to worry about. ArcGIS uses a new raster library "under the hood". The old library created .rrd files to hold the reduced resolution overviews (pyramids), while the new library saves them to a .ovr file. Thanks for the suggestions, Luke! I tried them all but I was still having issues. One of the ArcGIS savvy guys was able to get me straightened out. Apparently all I need to do was bring the image into ArcMAP, georeference it, and then just use the "Save Georeferencing" option in the drop down menu. Simple as that. Once I got the two images figured out and saved properly my end user sent me a whole bunch more! Ain't that how it always works? Thanks again!

Very briefly, you can post feature services and tiled services to ArcGIS Online. IE. serve features or cached tiles. If what you want to serve through a webmap falls into that category, then ArcGIS Online would probably be enough. Besides the data you want to publish to ArcGIS Online, my feeling your biggest hurdle will be your "home web server". Does your current internet provider (IP) allow you to serve HTTP requests, can you open up your router/modem/firewall to serve those requests, does your IP assign you a dynamic or static IP address (or are you purchasing a domain and referencing it to your computer). I believe you can serve web content from a personal computer through most IP's, just note that some are more complicated than others to get setup. The alternative to hosting your own app is to host it in ArcGIS.com: http://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/create-maps/create-map-apps.htm (apologies if you're already savvy to the whole hosting at home. I just consider it an area that most people wouldn't be familiar with. However, this point on serving content would be true for webapps, or if you installed ArcGIS Server on your home network.) I'm not an expert, but I'd say "yes" based on this link: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-home: ArcGIS Online Named User account and 100 Service Credits Hi Kevin, Thanks for the info! I think that's pretty much everything I was looking for. So far the idea is to only be hosting feature services on AGOL so I am confident that part of the plan will be fine. As far as the web server goes, no apology necessary! I am very new to all of this and had not thought about whether my IP allows its customers to serve HTTP requests. I checked with my project SysAdmin (my little brother!) and he says he's set up web servers using the same IP in the past. He also volunteered a Dell PowerEdge! If I can't get this tiny project working on my BeagleBone Black I may have to switch gears and use his big boy machine. He also says it won't be hard to configure the modem/router to allow the traffic through. And I remember him mentioning the IP address and that the easiest way would be to shell out a few bucks for a dynamic DNS service since I don't have a static IP at home. I think that covers everything. Or at least I hope the stuff it doesn't cover is not hard to set up. The whole point of this project is to learn how to set up web servers and to host applications on them, learn how to publish GIS services to AGOL and/or an in-house ArcGIS for Server machine, and get a small app running well. Since I have all the hardware and the software is only $100 for home use I think this is a great way to gets some real education. I took a few web courses through ESRI and, honestly, the prerequisites were horribly understated and most of the classes went straight over my head. Hands-on always works for me so I think I'll give it a try. Thanks very much!!

I've searched high and low and haven't found a solution to this issue and I'm stumped! I was given a .cgm file and asked to georeference and output a TIFF from the georeferenced file. I used 4 control points to georeference the image after adding it to my map as a .png file. When I export the result is a TIFF image along with .aux, .tfw, and .ovr files. The TIFF thumbnail is a solid black rectangle, though, and it opens up in the program the end user is trying to use as a black rectangle. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Also, the end user says the other georeferenced TIFFs he has include a .tif, .aux, and a .rrd if that helps at all. Thanks!!

ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server are not funcationally equivalent. For example, you can publish image services to ArcGIS Server but not ArcGIS Online. The list goes on. ArcGIS Online is much more limited in what it supports. Thanks for your reply rlwatson, I am aware of the limitations of ArcGIS Online but it is more than capable of handling the types of things I wish to accomplish. That said, is there anyone who might be able to shed a bit of light on my original question? Thanks everyone!

I sent this as an email to esri support (waiting to hear back) but I thought I would also ask here to get as much input as possible. Thanks everyone! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The (hopefully brilliant) idea I have is to host my own JavaScript apps at home. I want to configure an application or two and use them as examples/demos in conjunction with my resume and host everything on a personal webserver. My thinking is I could purchase an ArcGIS for Home Use license for map creation, publish services to ArcGIS Online, host the JavaScript, browser-based application on my home webserver and configure it to consume services from AGOL. Is this something that would work or would I actually need ArcGIS for Server? Are there aspects I possibly don't know about/haven't thought of to make this idea work? Also, can you tell me if it's been sorted out yet that when one pays for ArcGIS for Home Use they actually do receive an AGOL account? I remember reading last year there were some issues with that... Thank you 🙂

Michael: You were trying to run that Javascript code on a machine without tomcat or iis? I was running the code on a machine with iis and I was getting numerous errors, so I think that will only solve some of your problems. Yeah, so I don't know what I'm doing. Honestly, I appreciate you guys chiming in to help me but I just don't think I have the knowledge to do this right now. I didn't even know what Tomcat was until Jeff mentioned it. I have some learning to do. Thank guys!!

no its not, just an old template. Just so you know, you cant just run the file from the filesystem, it must be hosted in a webserver such as tomcat or iis Jeff! I just saw something saying I need to have this on a server for it to work. Tomorrow I am going to IKEA with my little brother who is sysadmin. I think I'll see he can teach me about servers during our four hours of drive time 🙂

Is this template part of the Beta testing for a configurable JS Viewer that ESRI plans on releasing some time in the summer? No, this is the Basic Template javascript template that is posted at Github. When you create an application from an AGOL map there is an option to download the template and that redirects you to Github to download a zip file. I thought maybe it was as easy as unzipping the files, reference my AGOL web map's ID in the html file, and then open it with a browser. I'm starting to understand I may be a little too noob for this!

Have you tried using any debugging tools such as FireBug for FireFox or Developer Tools (F12) in Chrome? There is definitely an issue with the below line <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/layout.css"> as the code does not know where to look for this stylesheet. Yeah, I don't really know how to use those types of tools yet. I am new to JS so I was sort of hoping downloading the template would be almost plug an play. As far as the CSS goes, it wouldn't see the "css" folder and the layout.css file in the css folder? The html document and the css folder are in the same directory...
