OK, please ignore the paragraph below (my original response) I realize now that I completely misread Scott's reply to my question. Yes, I understand now and will take a look at the symbol's properties to see if I can set an angle field. Thank you! OLD: Let me try to restate my question: I use shapefiles with character point features, and a couple of years ago when I first started working with them, I had tried to rotate them, but they would just snap back into place when I let go, so instead I converted to graphics. Then, just recently, for some reason I tried to use the rotate button again, and this time it worked: the points stayed rotated, AND, when I looked at the attribute table, I saw that a value had been placed into the field called rotation (I did not put the values there - they were put there automatically when I rotated the points by hand). So, encouraged by this, I tried to create a new shapefile, and included a field called rotation, and tried to rotate those points, but they did NOT stay rotated and did not automatically put a value into the field. I think I must have just stumbled across a very strange bug, because I swear to you that the points stayed rotated and they had values in a rotation field that I did not enter.

I thought for the longest time that I had to convert point symbols to graphics in order to rotate them, but then just the other day I discovered that I WAS able to rotate them using the rotate tool on the editing ribbon. This is the same shapefile template I've been using for years and couldn't rotate, then all of a sudden I CAN rotate... very confused. I noticed that the attribute table does have a field called "rotation", and when I scroll down, it is all zeros until I get to the symbols that I was magically able to rotate, in which there are now numbers representing the degrees rotation, which were put there automatically i guess, because I just rotated them manually. I then created a new shapefile and added a field called rotation, but have not been successful in rotating those symbols by hand. Is this just some weird bug, or is there a setting that I haven't discovered that I am somehow inadvertently turning on and off? Thanks, Amy

I have a symbol that is suddenly displaying differently than it should. The symbol property editor box shows the correct symbol, but when it is used in the map, it is conflating the symbol with another one for a different layer. I tried closing and reopening, but it's still there. Here is the dialog box alongside the actual symbol in the map. It's a little hard to see, but in the middle there is another, smaller symbol. It's easier to see when you create a point - the conflated symbol briefly appears before the correct one is added on top. Is this a bug? (this is not actually Pro, but ArcMap 10.5)

Hi Kelly, OK, thanks for the detailed and very informative reply! I will try reducing the scale of the map in order to reduce the number of features. Thanks, Amy

Tried publishing as Tile layer from AGOL (in Overview page of the hosted feature layer), but it didn't retain the time-slider functionality.

Well, now the layer is no longer out of alignment. Don't know what changed, but simply closing and reopening in map viewer seems to have helped it align better. ???

Hi Kelly, there are about 3800 features. I've shared the map with public, but since I tried to project the original layer to WGS84 it's way off alignment with the basemap, but that's another problem. The behavior I described is still there. Here's the link, I think: http://ucmerced.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=c17a8f6df9764972a36b8f4524863cbe However, I did get a warning when I uploaded it that it might not display properly for some reason (I can't remember the wording now, would have to go back and try it again I guess). So, if you can't see it, let me know and I'll try to redo it. Thanks for your help!

update: Tried doing Vector Tile instead of Feature, but got the error: "The layer can not be added to the map because its coordinate system or tiling scheme can't be adjusted to align properly with the basemap." Tried projecting the layer to WGS84 and sharing again, but got the same error. Why would the layer projection be OK when shared as a feature web layer but not when shared as a vector tile layer?

I successfully uploaded a Web Layer to AGOL (Yay!), and the time-slider function works (yay!), but the layers draw much too slowly, so it goes blank in between layers, and then draws the layer in jumps and starts. Should I try sharing it again, but instead of selecting the Feature option, do a tile or vector tile format? Another issue is that the time-slider function won't allow me to do custom time periods, but I see other's with the same problem on GeoNet and no solutions yet.

I'm sure your answer is correct, but I am also sure that I did try to share as a web layer and it didn't work. But that may be due to another problem. I'm suspecting the projection issue. When I get back to the office I will see if I can figure it out. But thanks very much for your help! Hopefully I won't be back on here next Tuesday with more questions. I wish there were a hard-copy of explicit instructions, I find navigating online help very frustrating. I keep coming across the same pages over and over, but they never solve my problem.

Oh dear, I could have sworn I did the Share Web Layer. Maybe that was an earlier attempt. I will have to wait until I am back in the office next week and just try again. Thanks for trying to help.

One thing that may be the problem, after talking with my colleague, is that the projection isn't correct. I didn't know that AGOL doesn't project on the fly, so even though it allowed me to publish the layer, it won't be openable online because of the projection problem. Does that sound likely?
