I can't figure out how to upload a shapefile. Do I need to upload it somewhere before trying to add it to my map? Using the story builder doesn't seem to allow me to upload anything, just choose a map from various online places with which I am not familiar. The first option, My Content, seems a likely place to upload something, but I don't know where that is.

I've been using the Align Edge tool in topology toolbar with success, but all of a sudden it is not working - instead of aligning the edges of two polys, it deletes one of the polys. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Yes - it actually truncates the digits. Yes, it is long integer, not short.

Sorry, I partly solved this (I was accessing the wrong shapefile in ArcCatalog), but there is still an issue with long integer fields sometimes not allowing more than 5 or 6 digits.

Suddenly I am unable to create a long integer field with precision greater than 5. I've tried multiple times, and sometimes when I'm in ArcCatalog it will show 8 as the precision, but when I open in ArcMap, it shows 5 (and allows only 5 when I try to enter more). Any ideas? (I'm using shapefiles instead of a geodatabase because my employer requires it.) Thanks!

Thanks Jennifer - there's nothing more to tell at the moment. I will need to get back on ArcGIS (on Friday) and pay attention to the various steps I take before trying to edit to see if I can notice a pattern. I'll report back if I can figure it out.

The reason I like to edit in Activated Map mode is that I'm doing detailed floor maps of buildings and it's easier to get things aligned properly when the straight lines are horizontal and vertical, instead of askew when in Map view. Also I can use the guides in activated map view to make things straight. Anyway, I think I may have got it down, it seems to have to do with the order in which I highlight a feature - I have to do it before I go into Layout view. If I try to highlight a feature in activated map view, sometimes it gives me a little dropdown menu to choose which feature I want to edit, but not always. Instead, it acts like I'm not selecting anything. It just won't select. But I think Maribeth is right about taking chances doing it this way.
