Hi Stuart, First, let's tackle the background information: What is ArcGIS Online?—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS What is ArcGIS Enterprise?—ArcGIS Enterprise | ArcGIS Enterprise ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop So, after reading through that, you should have a much better understanding of the 3 products. The TL;DR, ArcGIS Online is a SaaS offered by Esri. ArcGIS Online is a cloud-based mapping and analysis solution. Use it to make maps, analyze data, and to share and collaborate. Get access to workflow-specific apps, maps and data from around the globe, and tools for being mobile in the field. Your data and maps are stored in a secure and private infrastructure and can be configured to meet your mapping and IT requirements. ArcGIS Enterprise is an on-premise or cloud based single tenant WebGIS. ArcGIS Enterprise puts collaboration and flexibility at the center of your organization's GIS. It pairs industry-leading mapping and analytics capabilities with a dedicated Web GIS infrastructure to organize and share your work on any device, anywhere, at any time. ArcGIS Pro is the essential application for creating and working with spatial data on your desktop. It provides tools to visualize, analyze, compile, and share your data. It is a desktop client, with hardware requirements: ArcGIS Pro 2.2 system requirements—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop Now, as far as hardware is concerned, depending on workload, a laptop with a GPU will be more than enough to satisfy most users. your power users will be better suited with a desktop machine, or even a virtual desktop on a server with a GPU and a lighter weight laptop. Hope this helps.

disappointing, this is definitely something I'd submit as an Idea! I'd also recommend working through your Esri rep and submit an enhancement request.

I was recently helping a customer with RDP access and exposing the GPU to the RDP session. By default, Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 do not enable the GPU for rendering over RDP. Changing a Group Policy can easily change this. As of Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016, you can enable GPU usage remotely as both operating systems natively support DirectX 11 / OpenGL 3+ over RDP. It is as simple as setting a toggle in the group policy correctly on Windows 10 / Server 2016: Open the Edit Group Policy tool from Control Panel or use the Windows Search dialog (Windows Key + R, then type in gpedit.msc) Browse to: Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment Then enable “Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions” Doing this activates DirectX/OpenGL and the GPU over RDP. You can confirm it's working by launching ArcGIS Pro, opening a map, then hitting Shift + E, this will display the rendering information for your ArcGIS Pro session. DirectX OpenGL The RDP client you use to connect must also support GPU, So you'll have to be on Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016. For more specifics from Microsoft, check out: Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 10 AVC/H.264 improvements in Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview - Micros… ** Edit ** Minor revision to indicate that both OpenGL and DirectX are supported.

You could add the layer again, symbolized as you'd as a separate layer to the service.

Jonathan, I'd suggest you post this to the appropriate Developer Communities group. This group is more for practical implementation for the ArcGIS Enterprise technology stack.

You'll need to go into your Portal admin page as the primary login and go to: System Properties—ArcGIS REST API: Administer your portal | ArcGIS for Developers Then, update the PrivatePortalURL and WebContextURL to the Load Balancer DNS. This will tell portal that the new DNS entry for the Load Balancer is the correct URL. you'll want to do everything through these URLs going forward.

Michael, The load balancer (ALB) should forward to the Web Adapter over 443, then the Web Adapter should take over from there. now, on the ALB settings in AWS Console under EC2, click load balancers, click your load balancer, click listeners. Then under Rules, click the rule for 443(80 may be the same rule), click the Health Checks tab, and confirm the following rules are set for ArcGIS Server and Portal for ArcGIS: Portal: <Your_Context>/portaladmin/healthCheck ArcGIS Server: <Your_Context>/rest/info/healthCheck

the easiest thing to do is use an AWS ALB as a pass-through to your Web Adapter host and let the ALB manage the SSL.

Hi Jeff, I'm an Enterprise Architect with Esri Professional Services. You sound like you're fairly technically savvy already, using Chef is a fairly good indication of this. Unfortunately, when you get into deployments of this size, it becomes much less of a theoretical exercise to a much more practical one where you need to carefully look at your required workflows and use cases to come up with the right answer. I'd be happy to answer some specific questions, but I think you'd be well served by reaching out to your Esri team and schedule a call with an architect in Professional Services as a preliminary step to help determine a level of effort to assist you.

Yes, only PostgreSQL Database tier authentication is supported. Further, using AD with PostgreSQL can be facilitated through direct LDAP connections to AD. I do not think it's something we support natively.
