Actually ESRI (the guys from the Developer Summit 2016 say, for best practices, to have MIN Instance set to MAX if its a service that is heavily used. when min is a low digit (e.g. 1) and max is a larger one (e.g 5) when the demand is there, takes time for ArcSOC to build the instance... thus Min = max = fastest possible availability.

The URL would end up on the right side of the domain... ags.mycampus.edu/[APP] agis.mycapmus.edu resolves to the machine... there are other tricks that can be done by NLBs... Netscalar / F5 / Kemp appliances... etc.

More than likely they would run into the same issue that I have... Unable to duplicate the issue.

You can see what exactly is going on by manually running c:\Program files\ArcGIS\Server\framework\etc\scripts\startserver.bat ... you will see exactly where the hangup is...

The example provided does not work because one is still able to hit http as seen here: http://irenevanwinkel.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=35158fa5622444a8ae4f614a254dd5e7 Matthew can change the setting so that Anonymous is not allowed as seen here under My organization >> Edit Settings >> Security... The above will work for Matthew There are of course other ways such as URL Rewrite on IIS (portal Web adaptor) to always rewrite http with https.

from 10.0 to 10.1 there was a huge change on how to access ArcGIS Server... Local connections (AGSConnection()) are no more... I am sure you have found that out. As per others questions, it depends on what you are looking for. It is through the REST/SOAP service API? Is it to create SOIs or SOEs ? ( Server object interceptors / Server object extensions )

10.4 would more than likely be fully released sometime 'after' the Dev summit. This is the trend.. after the dev summit, before the User Conference.

The web adaptor runs in IIS. default is arcgis. and would be placed under the Sites>>Default Web SIte IIS would use 80 or 443 from the outside into that machine. This is done by using Bindings to bind which port to the Web Site, along with the Pool. note that 443 requires adding a cert. You need to be familiar with Internet Information Services (windows product) and use IIS Manager. All those ports you mentioned, are needed on the ArcGIS Server machine, NOT the web server machine where the adaptor runs on. When you installed the web adaptor, you would have then applied the 6080 or 6443 LINK to the web adaptor to arcgis server... thus, the web server just needs to be able to SEE the machine where ArcGIS Server is hosted. (FQDN). You should not be opening any of those ports on the web application server, where the Web adaptor is hosted. ArcGIS Server needs those ports opened, only on the machine that AGS is installed on. If the web adaptor just happens to be installed on the same machine... so be it.. but it doesnt change anything. You dont need to open 6443 if you are not running HTTPS (SSL). this is set on arcgis server end -under /admin. Has this not been architected to understand what is all needed? (there is a lot involved here). Im a bit nervous on what is being done here... would make any sysadmin or network guy scream! (Poking holes in the firewall = more screaming) It also seems like you have not done any architecture planning either...which would make the business scream!
