Using 10.3.1, I only see the alias in Identify. What version are you using?

Just noticed the same problem: user can edit attributes but cannot create a new feature. All versions are public. SQL Server/SDE 10.1 Desktop 10.3.1 Advanced SQL Native Client 2012 The version in question is the child of one I created yesterday with a database authentication login. The editing user is using an operation system login, so his version when editing is prefaced with "DBO" not "SDE". We were forced into OS authentication recently due to security rules.

It does not sound like you need subtypes; I would just set up specific domains in one database and populate them. Next step is to associates a field or fields with a domain. So once the mushroom feature class is set up, assign the mushroom type domain to mushroom type field. I usually do this with the geoprocessing tool, but it can also just be done in ArcCatalog using the Fields properties screen.

I think I get what you're asking. At some points in your selections, you will want to "select from curren selection" not just "create a new selection."

Don't. SharePoint is slower than direct access, often unreliable, and does not really have a directory/subdirectory structure (it is more list-like), which is a huge factor in organizing your data logically and securing data. It also does not really link to files--it requires uploading them. There are databases behind SharePoint, and storing databases within databases is not a good practice, IMO. Security and version changes that will come in the future could break it easily; there aren't good conversion tools for IT to use to solve conversion and restoration issues. The only real advantage is the subscription/feed feature that can tell you when people edit something, and the announcements. So when my portals worked better, I mainly used it for Excel and Adobe fillable forms, announcing data changes, and documentation such as the very limited Wiki tool. All was lost due to a security upgrade; but not all SP portals are that bad. (My environment is highly secure and changeable, and my IT support is variable, so your results may be a little better.)

You would only need as many MXDs as you have page layout map sizes or orientations. I usually add a field for map size and orientation, do a definiton query on it in my 2-3 MXDs and export those selected pages. It is easy enough to combine PDFs if needed, although Adobe Pro is not that friendly to different layouts either.

The multiple-editor situation is not the only reason for using versions. Versions can provide some protections that allow you to not process changes, for example, until they are approved. I have had some annual updates to somewhat controversial data that could not be published anywhere until vetted. They were hidden in a version other than Default; I don't have references in standard maps to any version other than default. When it is time to publish edits, posting changes is pretty foolproof, while, for example, keeping changes in a file GDB and bringing them into SDE might not work so seamlessly. You can also back out changes or do other restores easily by getting data from other versions (not edited). On a day to day level, simply being able to use version-compare tools is useful when you are interrupted constantly as I am. Also, you can post at the end of/beginning of the day, so viewers don't see changes flashing at them while they are trying to work.

Correction: Technically, software can be uninstalled without losing the ESU, but reinstalling would require finding a good unused ESU. And, when you don't know who has which license, that can be tricky.

(not sure why this is tagged popular now, but I have an answer for those of us who do not have full admin rights. ) See also message 89515 from 2014 in geonet. The fulfillment ID can only be linked to the ESU no. by calling ESRI support. The FIDs are really long, so I would take a screenshot of each one. The ESUs should show up in MyEsri if you are authorized to see licensing for your account. However, if the single-use license systems still have the software installed, it does not take administrative rights to deauthorize them. Users can do this themselves; or a sysadmin could log in as them and do it. They will lose ArcMap until they get a new concurrent license set up, which again a sysadmin could set up for them pretty quickly if the license server is up and running. As they are deauthorized, the ESUs/licenses will disappear pretty quickly (an hour?) from MyEsri, so you can infer who they belonged to if you have people e-mail you when they have deauthorized. But if you want to do the deauthorization without disturbing users, I don't know the best way to do this. ESRI can deauthorize/release licenses for you, but they should only need to do this if someone uninstalled the software or if a system dies before a single use license is deauthorized. So make sure everyone is trained not to do the former; the latter situation is inevitable.

One of my feature classes, a large file (50K records), cannot be appended to because there is no spatial index. The metadata and geoprocessing history shows that there was an index last spring, when it was last updated. Any reason why this would disappear? I see there is tool to fix it, but all of our SDE privileges are messed up, so I can't run this tool. It is a 10.1 SQL Server-base database. Could this indicate an integrity problem with the database overall?

You can save the fields you want to see/don't see in a .lyr file. If you really need to customize the Information tool beyond field choices, that is what an HTML Popup is.

This is an example of why you cannot safely use ObjectIDs for relationships or joins; they can have gaps due to editing and the gaps will be missing or different in another feature class, or if rows are deleted and reloaded. This gap problem is even true with the outputs of geoprocessing tools. In our conversion to SDSFIE 3.1, we added a business table key. This can be set to the ObjectID or the ObjectID plus/minus some number, but it will never change unless you need it to. It has the same field name in the feature classes and business tables, and the same name across features and tables, so it is easy to work with. If you have a safe key that won't change, your coworker could add the new points with the safe key field, clear out the related object, and add the changed ones in as new. You should be able to export the related table from your edit version. Without seeing the data, I am not sure about the best way to tackle this; I would personally do lots of staring at the data, summarizing, and joins to analyze what is in which file before proceeding.

Long term, you may want to look into routes. Each trip is really just an event associated with your base road line. And there are probably other features that would be associated with the route. You could copy your road into a new route feature class. This is the way our DOT works with road assets and related features.

Don't get the easier to set up point. It takes 15 seconds to set up a FGDB. Although you do have to think about what to call it. However, I don't believe shapefiles support templates, which makes setting up a new table with standard field names and defaults much easier. I also really hate that shapefiles never seem to have geoprocessing history in their metadata, something I have to use often when investigating old files I did not create.

I am attempting to align feature classes to a new standard (SDSFIE 3.1). It seems that occasionally I can completely remove the subtype, but most of the time I cannot. The subtypes are empty and the data is in SDE tables. I can delete other fields. Is there any way to get rid of these fields without reloading to a new schema?
