If you are learning GIS by using the lessons and exercises in the "Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Project Workbook" then this discussion forum is for you. Welcome! For many years, users of Esri's GIS and mapping products and technologies have found these discussion forums to be a great way to connect, share, and learn with others around the globe. Likewise, the "Understanding GIS" series of books have been a great way for many thousands of people to explore the power of GIS. These tools help us better model and visualize our surroundings spatially. Better map data plus better analytical tools equals better decisions for improving how we interact with our world. As you come across questions or have comments about the Workbook, or questions about the GIS concepts in general as you are learning them, post them as new threads here. Or if you see other questions and comments, feel free to jump in and share what you think. Others who are using the Workbook will jump in and do the same. Esri Staff will also watch this forum to see how we can help. Let's learn together!

I'm going to move this from the MapObjects forum into the Land Records forum. Seems to fit that better. Plus, not quite clear which product is being used here. I strongly suspect it doesn't have much to do with MapObjects.

Hi Friends, I am new to the ArcGIS resource center. I am trying to workout the samples for PanZoom in VB. But i am facing some issues, can any one will help me please? Thanks, Amol I could be wrong, but it seems you are using the ArcObjects SDK rather than the MapObjects SDK, so I'm going to move this thread over to the ArcObjects forum.

yet geoprocessing is suffering and the General tab is increasing with both geoprocessing and python stuff...kill general or institute the "Check/Look here first" sticky Ok, let me work on that. What would the sticky say? "Before posting here on the General forum, please check to see if there is a more specific forum that better fits your question or discussion." (?) Ok, I'll weigh in again. We cannot remove a General forum unless every more specific topic (within reason) has a home, a set that makes it intuitively obvious to users of all levels where their post should go, and that's probably not practical. There are users who don't know enough about the terms or the software to know where to start. There may be niche areas that can't really support an active set of users with their own forums. There may be discussions that are general and overarching across ArcGIS. We cannot control where users make posts. We can provide a list, we can provide instructions, stickies, but in the end folks will use the forums the way they want. On the other hand, a sticky couldn't hurt, but a better solution is better moderation (ie., moving threads). We need to improve on that.

Sounds like it has been a success, and it was really good that Esri implemented the new forum category. It's good to see a lot of activity in the Python forum. Having a Python forum to discussion Python issues sounds like a no-brainer (and it is), if one only looks at one side of the problem. The risk on the other side was the added confusion having a Python forum might cause on the other forums which may have discussions which may include Python to some degree; like "where do I put it?". Seems that is happening to some degree. But at least the complaints to me have completely stopped, so I take that as a good sign that many are happy with the change.

If you are using MapObjects, take a look at this forum thread here; particularly this single post: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/3584-Get-points-from-shapefile?p=10804&viewfull=1#post10804 However, based on your question I'll take a better guess that you're actually coding against ArcGIS's ArcObjects. If so, then take a look at this forum thread here: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/3619-fastest-way-to-parse-points-in-polygon-feature-class Going along with this better guess, I'll also move this thread from the MapObjects forum into the ArcObjects forum. -jb

To complicate matters, it seems that things that were posted originally at arcgis.com (with or without the code to go along) have made their way into the Code Gallery. I was all set to complain that people were using this Code Gallery incorrectly and then noticed that my own application (which I'd posted as a Web App) shows up there. I certainly didn't post it as a code example, because I didn't include the source code when I made my entry. I think the new pages are forums are very unclear about the best place to post code and the best way to access it. I took advantage of all the samples in the previous forum and I really miss being able to readily get to the code! In the end, ArcGIS Online (ie, the "My Content" tab on ArcGIS.com) is the place to share web and mobile apps and code. The galleries that are in the ArcGIS Resource Center for the web and mobile APIs are nothing more than a filtered display view of apps and code shared on ArcGIS Online. It's just a view. For example, the ArcGIS API for Flex Resource Center has a Code Gallery, which is a filtered display view of shared content on ArcGIS Online. If you're on one of these web or mobile API galleries and want to add something, the link toward the upper-right "Upload your app" is going to refer you to instructions on how to share what you have on ArcGIS Online. Some of the Galleries on the Resource Centers are still using their own storage and display mechanism (like Geoprocessing, ArcObjects .NET, Java, etc.). Once ArcGIS Online can handle that kind of content, those will be deprecated. What we're trying to move toward is to make ArcGIS Online be the one place to share things, create groups, control access to your maps, apps, and data, and so on. I'd really like to see the Code Gallery actually contain CODE! Whatever happened with that? In the previous resources set up, the code gallery contained example of source code so that users could see how a particular functionality was written. Instead it seems to have become another place where people can post their finished projects. It all depends on what folks choose to share. With web and mobile apps, it could be a Ready To Use app, a Configurable app, or a Code Sample (see attached screen shot). The first two may or may not have the code along with it. Owner's choice.

Thanks for your input! The community spoke and we listened. You wanted a Python forum. Here it is. At one level it makes sense. I'm using Python; would be nice if there was a Python forum to ask and help folks with Python questions. Before today there was no single place for users learning and using Python to discuss issues and learn techniques for getting the most from Python. Now there is. But what if? A bit of a risk we're taking is the possible fragmentation of the groups of folks that are using the forums. For example, there are already forums for software products and functional areas that make use of Python (e.g., Map Automation, Geoprocessing, Spatial Analyst, etc.) If you have a question to post and it involves, say Geoprocessing with Python scripting, where do you post it? Geoprocessing? Or Python? Our recommendation is for best exposure and best results, decide for yourself the primary nature of the question. If your issue is about really about Geoprocessing whether or not Python is involved, then go with Geoprocessing. But if your issue is really about your use of Python as a programming language and scripting environment, then try here. Let's give it a go, and let us know what you think.

Ok, here comes the Python forum. I certainly hope it's as useful as 85% of the active voters believe it will be. If not, you bet I've got my Nomex jacket and socks ready... I expect to take a lot of heat for this, but it's worth it. But seriously folks, thank you all for your input. I'm sure you all have much better ways to spend you productive time, so the fact that you invested in this issue to help the community in the long run is greatly appreciated. BDFL? Nah. I serve you all, not the other way around. But as long as I can, I'm here to listen to what you want and act on what's best to evolve how things work out here.

Way to go, Mr Jim Barry, seems a bit crazy that this hasn't been finalized yet, but then out of 31,744 members on these forums there are only 79 replies, seems like a no brainer on NOT implementing a new forum. Seems like the new forums were a replacement for the old forums, but if we keep adding new forum threads, aren't we going to end up with the old broken forums, I don't know, perhaps we should just have a good tagging system, and quality search, with a few generalized categories, however, I do see the ability to search by a specific category as useful, but if tagging is done successfully, this would be a bit redundant. Close, but not exactly the same thing. With the old forums, if someone wanted a new forum they just got it. No one was there to look at the big picture, nor ask those who use and rely on the forums. Untended gardens get overgrown with weeds. That isn't the same thing as saying that if adding or splitting a forum has a strong justification we shouldn't do it. Extensions are the example I keep going back to as one forum splitting into 12 with the strongest justification there could be. And it's working. But your point is clearly taken about slippery slopes. I agree with you there. We just need to be smart, know they're out there, and avoid those where possible.

I am getting conflicting reports, you jb, says the above. This is what I got from Jack Dangermond at the user conference. "at the heart and soul and center of ArcGIS is Python, a scientific programming language. Python, which not only gives a nice scripting and programming language but also connects to the open source world where there's interesting statistical tools and mathematical tools and modeling tools and it also opens up ArcGIS tools to that world, as well." nuff said. Sigh, come on Ryan. My "just a scripting language" was in the larger context of the paragraph, comparing a scripting technology with the functional capabilities you can drive with it. It's not the same meaning as a standalone statement as you pulled it out to be. Let's go folks. I'm trying to serve your needs and do what needs to be done to make the forums better and more useful. Dissecting my statements to imply a different meaning isn't helping solve the problem. We all know what Python is.

@Jim: Didn't mean to razz you too bad about "GIS in General". A little bummed that some get their suggestions acted upon right away, while others have to work a little harder and wait a bit longer. Gotcha. You're right. But... Some ideas are easy to do, are unanimous or lowly-contested, and are low-no-impact on any other part of the system. I don't mind doing those right away. But, hehehh, some ideas and issues are none of those things. To deal with them fairly, we really need to sort them out well. ...even with the proposed Editing forum vote. Have you voted? There aren't any 'No' votes yet ;). Looks like a no-brainer. I'll give that one another week. If isn't a wave in the other direction nor any deal-breaker argument the other way, we'll make an Editing forum. Hey, if we stay on this track, we'll find all of the major "functional" categories that GIS pros really use and the General forum will waste away. We can hope.

I think a forum for python scripting would be good for new companies that work with python! Well in a way sure. Folks clearly want to ask, answer, learn, and help others with using Python. But that doesn't seem to be the heart of the issue of how to organize the forums. Really what the issue seems to be is this. Should there be one Python forum for everything you can do with Python, or should the forums continue moving toward being functionally-based? Meaning, if you're doing Map Automation with Python, use the Map Automation forum. If you're doing other geoprocessing related tasks with Python, use the Geoprocessing forum, etc. In the end, Python is just a scripting language. Bottom line: a. Is there demand for a Python forum where the techniques of coding in the language are discussed in the abstract? b. Or is it more important for discussions to include Python in the context of what you're actually trying to accomplish with the scripting? I'm concerned that those who are just quickly jumping to "I'm using Python, there should be a Python forum" might not be thinking it all the way through. Again, I'm trying to stay out of the fray and keep my opinion out of this. But I don't want us to live with a decision that hasn't been fully thought through.

I am not sure about that, it will probably end up being moved to the newly proposed Data Editing forum http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/17451-Do-you-want-an-EDITING-forum Good point. Perhaps I missed it when I asked before, but as for those who believe there should be a separate Python forum, I'd like to hear what they would say to these two questions: 1. If I am performing GP functions by coding Python and I have questions, would I search/post in the GP forum or the Python forum? 2. If I am using Python for Map Automation, would I search/post in the Map Automation forum or the Python forum? I'm not trying to stump anyone here. If you're trusting me to make the best decision on what you all want collectively, I need to make sure I have as much relevant info as possible.
