Has anyone created a formula which calculates the 3D area of a Z-enabled polygon within ArcPad? Thank you for any help, Paul Lohr

Hello Curtis and Duncan, There is a long history with ESRI technical support on this issue. The case number is 01619965. Of course most folks won't be able to read the incident history aside from ESRI employees.

I've looked through the ArcPad help and searched the forums but have not found an answer to this question. Is there a way to copy / paste the geometry of a shapefile / layer in ArcPad? It would not matter if the attributes would carry over but it would be great if they did. Thank you for any help, Paul Lohr

Marko, Have you tested Collector with a 3D-enabled feature class to find out if it will capture an elevation value? There is the sxBlue III GNSS which I've not used but is supposed to offer cm accuracy and work with the operating systems that Collector lives on. SxblueGPS > SXBlue III + GNSS

Sara, thank you for the question. It is quite broad so I can't cover all of what you will need to know to get started. Hopefully this gets you going in the right direction. I use the Trimble Positions for ArcPad extension. That is likely to be needed if a straightforward solution to the best accuracy is desired. Most of the settings above will be handled by this extension. Other settings within this extension will help you obtain the best possible accuracy. If someone has found in the Trimble Positions documentation what the best accuracy possible is, please share that with us. I have not found it. The only references to accuracy that I found include no support for centimeter level accuracy and RTX is supported but not RTK. But I am pretty sure that RTK is supported in spite of the documentation. My guess would be decimeter (0.33 feet) accuracy is possible. Keep in mind this is a guess. http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-527441/022516-043J_GIS_ProdSolns_Comp_BRO_US_1015_LR.pdf If you have Terrasync centimeter edition, that is the shortest path to centimeter accuracy. But you asked about ArcPad so this may be irrelevant. Have a great day, Paul Lohr

Hello Edith, I had the same message appear. This is with Desktop 10.2.2, ArcSDE 10.2.2, and SQL Server 2008 R2. The feature class I was attempting to edit had different permissions than the feature dataset. Once I set the correct permissions at the feature dataset level, the error message no longer appeared. The link below is to a help page that states 'All feature classes in a feature dataset must have the same user privileges.' The privileges were not the same - that was the problem. ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2) The Change Privileges dialog allows me to attempt an altering of the privileges of a feature class even though it is within a feature dataset. As mentioned above, this is not supported. Since an error is not returned by the Change Privileges dialog and the feature class can be added to the dialog, I begin to think that the practice is acceptable. Why would the program go along with changing privileges of a feature class within a feature dataset if the idea is not supported? There may be a reason that I haven't learned of. Paul Lohr

I've tried what Curtis suggested with version 10.2.2. First of all your metadata has to be in the ArcGIS format (before running the XSLT Transformation tool). After running the XSLT Transformation tool, you'll need to use the Metadata Importer tool (Import Metadata did nothing). Then the geoprocessing history has been removed.

Jakub (or anyone else interested), I like your idea about raster to point then use the topo to raster tool in order to merge two separate point elevation layers into one elevation raster. If we created an elevation raster with 10 sparse / precise points and 500,000 dense / imprecise points, wouldn't we end up with small peaks or depressions where the 10 points occur? We are improving the accuracy at 10 locations but we still have many points that are imprecise. Thanks for any help, Paul Lohr

You might contact one of the United States ESRI offices to ask about licensing for Portal. The link below shows licensing for Portal available perpetually or through a fixed time period. Pricing | ArcGIS for Server The question about building ArcGIS Online functionality without Portal is interesting.

Curtis, If it is the case that normally we shouldn't need to determine the Z limit, perhaps it would help to have this added to the help page linked below? ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2)

Hopefully this will help someone else since I've seen it happen a few times. Using ArcGIS Server 10.0 and Desktop 10.0. Using a mapServer type service on ArcGIS Online, features cannot be identified on a certain layer within the service. We know that ArcGIS Online sends a URL to our local server as part of the identify operation. Going into Chrome's developer tools, then copying and pasting the identify operation URL into a new browser session results in an error 400, with no helpful details. The mapServer service comes from our local instance of ArcGIS Server. As a test, I added the mapServer layer to ArcMap and tried to identify a feature. Identify operations work in ArcMap. But not in ArcGIS Online - strange. In an attempt to fix this, i restarted the service, removed and re-added the layer in the ArcGIS Online map. Still, cannot identify features. Same error 400 is returned. Using the same layers, I rebuilt the MXD, created a new service, then added it to the ArcGIS Online map. Now identify operations are working just fine. Since the rebuilt MXD solved the issue, I am guessing there had to be corruption in the MXD. This same series of events has played out several times. At least we know how to correct the problem.

Hello, I am using ArcGIS Desktop 10.2.2. Has anyone has success in reprojecting the vertical coordinate system of LAS files using the ArcToolbox LAS to LAS tool? The input LAS files had PRJ files created for them, with the correct horizontal and vertical coordinate system. The horizontal reprojection works fine but the vertical coordinates remain the same. I am trying to go from NAVD 1988 meters to NAVD 1988 feet. Really it is just a conversion of units. Thank you for any help, Paul Lohr

What is the deal with encoding URL parameters? The ArcGIS Online help page linked below states that URL parameters must be encoded. But the link provided by Mike M. works without encoding. http://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/create-maps/use-url-parameters.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_907DD20534E143DEBF352CDA0F1AB938 From the page linked above: All query parameters must be encoded. URL encoding ensures that valid characters are sent to ArcGIS Online. Encoding replaces invalid characters with % followed by their hex equivalent.
