At the 2019 UC, I attended a session about story maps, and there was a "fun fact" given about the amount of time people are likely to spend on a traditional web page (xx seconds?) vs. something interactive like a story map (xx minutes?). I didn't get those jotted down, and now I'm wishing I had. Is there anyone who could answer this? I would much rather have an actual number, rather than using the watered down phrase "people like these, and will look at your content a lot longer!".

I've started digging around in my Control Panel > Event Viewer too, which I'm not that savvy with interpreting. I get similar errors to Ethan An error occurred: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ...... and so on and spotted one that sounds like a permission error: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160} and APPID {9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276} to the user (suppressed my ID here) SID (S-1-5-21-3219648850-738124763-203175933-125472) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. Now, I don't have administrative privileges with my account, but I shouldn't have to for this sort of work. I went back to the requirements page, and I see there is one version of Office 2016 that is known to have problems: Caution: *With Microsoft Office 2016 version 16.0.6326.1010, ArcGIS Maps for Office backstage controls do not function as designed. All other Microsoft Office 2016 versions are supported. I checked, and this is not the version we have, which is 16.0.4849.1000

Ethan, I went the other way, as you see, from 64-bit to 32-bit and neither worked. I'm starting to think it just doesn't work! I had a co-worker start completely from scratch, no prior history with previous versions of the add-in. He hasn't been able to get it to work either.

I feel like this ties to my question about not being able to load my worksheet of county data. I have publisher permission, so that can't be a solution for me. Good tip, though for the future, since not all my users will have publisher permission. I would have expected them to create content within Excel, and that Publisher would come into play as they shared out their content. I need to think through the various permissions people will need. I understand the need for a named user account, but just because a user can create their own content doesn't mean I would want them to publish it to Everyone.

I realized that when I updated my add-in from 4.0 to 5.0, I had downloaded and installed the 64 bit version, when I needed the 32 bit. I remedied that by uninstalling the add-in and installing the correct version. I thought, "Surely that must be it!" But no. I am still not able to create a basic shaded county map from a simple Excel spreadsheet. I tried a 2nd table that came from a completely different source, thinking the first one was corrupt somehow. Still no luck. This 2nd table also had a column for city name, which gave me another for generating some sort of layer on my map. I was able to successfully map US cities as a set of graduated circle symbols. My county column is called County. I added a field for State. I have tried using Cell Range as my input and I've tried creating a table out of that same range. In an older version of the add-in, creating a table helped instead of using cell ranges, but for this version, still nothing. I've actually used this add-in a few different times successfully in the past, but it's been a while. I have a different computer, running Windows 10 now, which would be a difference.

That doesn't make much sense to me, and it didn't work. Selecting County Subdivisions, it does complete, but it only looks to be matched to county names that are unique to Missouri. The other counties that get shaded are sprinkled around the country. And if I need to do something like append "..County, Missouri" to my county names, for County Subdivisions to work, that needs to be clearly shown as a tip. Don't make me dig into the documentation for something so rudimentary. My goal is to have this be an easy entry starting point for all the users in state government who need to just make some county shaded maps. I continue to be completely hopeful but disappointed with this platform, because for all the apparent "easy of use" there are some glaring gaps. I want to be able to recommend this to dozens of state employees, but I can't, because of issues like this. I stopped by this area at the UC last week and we had a brief "I don't know why more people don't use this" conversation. But coming back into the office and trying just a few things, I'm reminded again, "Oh, this is why you can't recommend it to everyone, it doesn't really work as well as it should". I'll update the software, but I'm back to thinking I can't recommend this for the general masses.

I have a table of county data with just a few columns, name, state, count, rate, etc. I can't get this to load onto a map. It starts to load, counts up to 1% and then disappears. This data came from another staff, who I suspected copy and pasted from something that left some strange formatting. I saved to tab delimited and brought it back in. Same issue. Question 1: What am I missing?! This is really plain data! Question 2: I'm not getting any errors, just something that doesn't load. Are errors being logged somewhere I can look up? Question 3: (Not all that related to this question) Why are the prompts for updating the version of the add-in so inconsistent? It prompted me earlier to update when I wasn't ready to, but now that I'm having problems, and thinking the update might help, it stopped asking me. I even rebooted, thinking I could get it to come up again. I know I can go and get the download, but that is the most user-unfriendly page to navigate and I'm a 30 year ESRI veteran!!!!!!

Is there some known bug for the optional text size for the comparison template? I would like to add optional text for map 1 and map 2, but no matter which size I choose for either, Map 1 is always displayed as a smaller font than Map 2. I have completely exited out of AGOL, closed and started a new browser window, but I'm never able to have the changes I make 'stick'. I always reverts back. Is this one of those "known bugs"? It seems like such a basic thing, I'm surprised it has been discovered and fixed long ago.

I would agree on principle, there in my perfect world. In reality it's pretty common to find companies that haven't addressed these kinds of connectivity issues. You would think that more companies would figure it out, then use it as a major selling point, "Hey, we figured out how to consume all that great data you have already on your ESRI platform ..."

I've been working through the various geoprocessing examples that use the Geoprocessor class. It has helped me to understand the input/output both through the services page, but also with the extra Help URL that most of them have, when they contain a screenshot of the original model. At the moment I'm specifically looking at the hotspot analysis, which filters 9-1-1 calls, both to show only the calls that fall within a range of dates, but also to generate a raster image of "heat". This is the extra Help URL https://sampleserver6.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/directories/arcgisoutput/911CallsHotspot_GPServer/911CallsHotspot/911CallsHotspot.htm Unfortunately it doesn't have the model that most of the other samples do. I know this isn't a new example, but any chance of someone at ESRI being able to share what the underlying model looks like?

I've recently been posed the same question. Tableau seems to be gaining a lot of traction in our organization, but I hate the idea of having to extract data so that it can be consumed in Tableau. At this point, we have way more data in ArcGIS Server, and I'm not interested in creating a parallel data system. I see there is a generic REST connector, but I have no idea 1) if it works at all, or 2) if it works with ArcGIS Server REST endpoints. If checking WMS when we author our services, that would still be OK. It's great there is a company that has a product that has a solution for sale, but I'm not ready to recommend that we have to buy something in order to make this work. The only thing I found from ESRI was from the local government forum, dated 2015. That's now rather dated and I'm curious if there is anything new on the horizon to make this easier. Even the Python script mentioned to generate a Tableau Marker Layer is still a "dump and load" solution.

We're working through a similar process now. I used Windows PowerShell for all of it. Apparently whatever is supposed to happen when you simply double check the appx files has been disabled on our system. I had to do all using an alternative account we have for just temporary admin rights for certain tasks. It acts like I got through the various VClibs, and then I ran the same add-appxpackage on the appxbundle. It acts like it deployed, but I don't see anything. I temporarily connected via my alternative admin account, but I still don't see any Collector for ArcGIS installed. Once I've gone through these steps, shouldn't I be seeing it under my start menu?

My spreadsheet contains a column of counts and rates. When the data is not statistically significant, the data originally had an * to indicate this. Because the column now contains characters, I am not able to use any of the styles that are based on numeric data. I changed the cells to be 0 instead, plus I told Excel these are Numeric, but I'm still only able to see classification and single symbol. Is there some trick for this?
