This is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I would place it in the legend as "AP (Airport)" If the resulting legend becomes too big, I would add a notes text item such as "Notes: AP = Airport" and any other abbreviations you need to explain. Regards

RickCheney, You can use the union tool for this. Add an attribute column to each shapefile, and populate it with a unique attribute like "Water" for your water shapefile and "Background" for the other. Run the union and leave the "JoinAttributes" option as "ALL". Then use a definition query such as "(your column name)" <> 'Water'. This will give you your background with the water polygons punched out. Regards

You need to choose a feature attribute hierarchy. What you create with overlay analysis requires this as a follow up process, as it will return the overlap as a separate polygon. If you can not create a hierarchy, then run a union analysis, and display the overlap as a different symbology to indicate your area of uncertainty. Regards.

I am not certain I fully understand your needs. I have created a copy of a feature class in the map, set my symbology to reflect what I want in the legend, set a definition query to FID = -9999 (which returns no features). Then I used that item in the legend instead of the more complex feature class. This allows you to customize the symbology and text in the legend, independent of the actual feature class symbology and text used in the display.

RhettZufelt has provided the correct answer. If you are still having issues, be aware that having the excel file open in Excel puts a lock on the file and prevents ArcMap from interacting with it. In addition, another instance of ArcMap that is open and points to the Excel file will put a lock on it, preventing interaction with it. Closing these links should enable access to the Excel file.

Thank you for your response, Bert. Do you know the unit performs under moderate canopy and close proximity to structures? Jim Cousins GIS Project Scientist S.S. I have been looking at this myself. I am still trying to get the real costs and specs, but the Trimble Catalyst seems a possible solution, for my needs anyway. It is certainly very affordable, but this depends on your collection needs. It is basically an antenna ($350) that you connect to your smart phone / tablet. You acquire a subscription to the "Catalyst service" which has a stepped cost depending on level of precision needed, from $40 to $350 per user per month. This subscription can be annual or "on demand". Still figuring this bit out, and an accuracy assessment for different collection environments, like amount of canopy cover, and building shadow. I am interested in what your final selection is. - Jim

You need to enable "jump lists". Right click the taskbar, and select "Taskbar Settings". In the next window choose "Start", and at the bottom, enable "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar". Regards, Jim

I have imagery collected by the USDA FSA, and have the associated meta data. I see under <Dataqual> <lineage> <procstep> <procdate> "<procdate>20130926<procdate>" Is this the procurement date, or the processing date? Link to metadata: ortho_1-1_1n_s_de005_2013_1.sid Thanks much! - Jim

Ashley Peters, any additional information? What type of layer is it, or is it all layers in the map? It sounds like you have addressed any potential problems with the ArcMap installation. Does this behavior occur in other map documents, or just this one? If just this one, you could run MXDdoctor (in your start menu under ArcGIS) against your map and see what it comes up with. Regards, Jim

David has a point. If you have not added the 2007 Office drivers, an xlsx file is not readable in ArcMap. This link addresses the .xlsx format: Understanding how to use Microsoft Excel files in ArcGIS—Help | Documentation Regards, Jim

there is a tool ArcToolbox >> Data Mangement tools >> Features >> Add XY Coordinates that will add and populate X Y columns in your shapefile. Beyond that, what do you mean by "Is there a way to read out the coordinates of individual points on Arcmap?" Regards, Jim

Layout Error 1 displaying the preview as very blurry / pixelated may be an indication of communication issues with your plotter. Have you successfully used this plotter from arcmap before? It almost appears that your preview is showing an extremely small area. If you check the dataframe properties, do the x/y location and width and height make sense? What happens if you set up a new map document, and then copy/paste your layers into that? If the issue is still there, try a different printer just to test printer communication. Any printer regardless of page size - just to test display under a different configuration. Regards, Jim
