Jamal, This is the SQL Server administration, not the ArcSDE administration as from within ArcGIS. You can probably change the password for an already existing SDE user in here somewhere, but this is not where you initially set it. See below. You set the SDE user password upon creation of the geodatabase structure in your SQL Server database. It is done in the Create Enterprise Geodatabase tool that you ran from ArcToolbox. If I look at the "q.pdf" file with screenshots you created, I see an entry line in that tool for "Geodatabase Administrator Password", this is probably the SDE user's password. The dialog seems to default to a 6 digit password, which corresponds with the "sde123" password the ESRI instructor gave you. I guess "sde123" is just the default password filled in by ESRI / the Create Enterprise Geodatabase tool, and you forgot to change it. It would have been better if there was no default password, and you were forced to enter one yourself, that way, you would have been aware of setting it, instead of running into the issue with a wrong / unknown password like you did. Thank you Marco the prompt reply. This is very useful. I do absolutely agree with you. I couldn??t be able to know how the ArcGIS could take the password for the sde user by default! And why we are not able to change the user name (sde) in this case? At the ??beginning of life?, how the sde login is created? is it ceated even before using the "create enterprise geodatabase" tool? At the the level of security? Hi Jamal, Good to hear you got it up and running. However, since -p is the ArcSDE database admin password, as in: sdemon -o start {[-i {<service> | <port#>}] [-s <server_name>] | [-H <sde_directory>]} [-p <ArcSDE_admin_password>] I understand you entered "sde123" as the SDE user's password in SQL server or during ArcSDE install. That is of course fine for a quick personal test setup like you are probably creating, but anyone reading this may prefer entering a strong password for more serious applications. Thank you for the elaboration Marco. This is helpful. I??m not sure at which step of the installation of the ArcSDE we are required to enter the users name/password. For example, during the installation of the sqlserver, there is a dialogue box at which we determine our user name and password as shown in the screenshot below: How about the ArcSDE? Does such dialogue box exist in the ArcSDE while being installed (I can??t?? remember)? And then where might I have chosen the user name/password for the ArcSDE to be sde/sde123 respectively?

Hi Jamal, It appears you may have the 'sysadmin' role applied to your SDE user. You can revoke this in SQL Server Management Studio by going to the Security folder > Logins> right-click on the SDE user > Properties > Server Roles. Uncheck 'sysadmin'. Thank you Jake for the answer. It works. , Best Jamal

The physical location of oracle and sqlserver database on the hard drive, It is wonderful that in case of sql server database, we are still able to store our mdf database in any location of the hard drive, all what we need is to attach this mdf file to the sql server then it will be seen when making connection through the ??database connections? in the ArcGIS as shown in the screenshot below: My issue now is related to Oracle. How can we choose the physical location of the database to be in a particular location and still we can manage to make connection to it from the ArcGIS? Is the folder ??orcl? can be saved anywhere on the hard drive such that we can make connection to it from the ArcGIS? , Thank you for the help, Best Jamal

Marco - While it is probably wise to populate the services file in port order, it certainly isn't required. The only thing that's necessary is a terminal newline (otherwise the last line in the file is discarded). Empty lines are legal (and ignored, just like lines with leading octothorpes). - V Hi Vince, Thank you for the answer. Could you please elaborate more regarding the ??terminal newline?? What should it contain?

Don't know if this is the issue (I don't have ArcSDE at hand right now), but I did notice that in the screenshot of the windows "services" file in notepad, that you copied the "esri_sde 5151/TCP" line at the end of the text file. If I remember it well, the line needs to be inserted in the rising order of port numbers, so in your case in between two other port number entries of the file. Thank you for the answer Marco the ??esri_sde 5151/tcp? is copied onto srvices file in page number 52 in the attached pdf file and also shown in the screenshot below: if the place of ??esri_sde 5151/tcp? in the service file is an issue then where should it be positioned?

That's a standard Windows error that appears whenever the ArcSDE service has been misconfigured in any way. Unfortunately, you didn't provide any of the information which would be necessary to help you: RDBMS product, version, and service pack/patchset ArcSDE version, service pack, and any additional patches The output from 'sdeservice -o list' The contents of your SDEHOME/etc/dbinit.sde file Any error messages from the SDEHOME/etc/giomgr.log An architecture description (the OS type and relative location of the ArcGIS Server, ArcSDE, and database components) All in text form, not as graphics, please -- It's important to place error messages in the message text block, because that's how others would be able to find your solution. In fact, if you had searched on the key words of the message ("arcsde service started then stopped"), you would have found a number of useful postings. - V Thank you for the answer Vince. Please, find attached the steps (powered by screenshots) that show how I configured the application server. I??m sorry not to provide these steps in text format as I wanted to let the screenshots to speak out themselves. ? I??m using Windows 7 64 ultimate, sqlserver 2088, ArcGIS 10.1 (advanced), ArcSDE 10.1 (Enterprise) ? sqlserver 2088, ArcGIS 10.1, ArcSDE 10.1 are installed on the same machine named m-pc ? The dbinit.sde file contains nothing ? The ArcSDE is installed in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcSDE ? The sql server database is physically saved in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA Hope that this is sufficient to lead me to my problem and thus I can get the service started. What about the ArcGIS Engine? Is it separate software? How about Felx/ silverlight? Are they ESRI products? how about the ArcFM? Thank you best Jamal

Jamal, Your request will definitely be considered for some future version. It turns out there are some ideas already floating around for zooming to pixels, although not quite like you (from a table selection). Thanks for the feedback. Best, Eric Thanks Eric. Yes, please consider it. Best Jamal

Hi Jamal, Zoom To Selected is short for Zoom to Selected Features. Using your screenshot in the original post, what would you have us do if you selected value = 2? There are 25551 pixels. Where do you want us to zoom? The rows in a raster attribute table are not like rows of discrete features in a feature class, nor is there a shape field containing geometry for easy query. It's not like there is a property within a raster dataset that stores the minimum bounding geometry for each value in the raster that could be used as a zoom extent. The case where the count is 1 is the only time you have a discrete record in a raster attribute table. I would argue its quite uncommon from all the data I've seen over the years. Zooming to selected pixels would have to make sense for all cases to even be considered. There are multiple ways to 'find' this pixel. 1. As stated earlier, convert to features. 2. Create a new raster with just that one pixel. There are several ways to do this one. Raster calculator, conditional statements, or if you want to make it easy just use Extract by Attribute from spatial analyst. Best, Eric Many thanks for the contribution Erci. still, I don??t see any problem to have the ??zoom to? working for cells! It is the same as we do it for vector when we select more than one feature and apply the ??zoom to?! zooming to many cells or many features should be the same! if i understood all the posts correctly, i recently tried something similar. i went with a raster/numpy-array approach. it works, but not nearly as fast as linda´s approach (hoping for her code/approach to be posted here as well)...i just slightly modified my stuff and timed a random 250x250 cell raster @ ~20s.
import numpy as np
import arcpy
def chkNeighbors(arr, x, y):
try:
left = arr[(x-1, y)] if x-1 >= 0 else 0
right = arr[(x+1, y)] if x+1 <= (np.shape(arr)[0]-1) else 0
top = arr[(x, y-1)] if y-1 >= 0 else 0
bottom = arr[(x, y+1)] if y+1 <= (np.shape(arr)[1]-1) else 0
hVal = 3
if all() \
and left == right == top == bottom:
return top
else:
return arr[x,y]
except IndexError:
print "error@", x,y
def doanalysis():
arr = arcpy.RasterToNumPyArray(r"C:\Default.gdb\Reclass_test500")
print np.shape(arr)
itemindex = zip(*np.where(arr))
i=0
for i in range(0,len(arr.flat)):
arr[itemindex] = chkNeighbors(arr, *itemindex)
ras = arcpy.NumPyArrayToRaster(arr)
ras.save(r"C:\Default.gdb\testraster")
Hi all, I would be very highly appreciated if you help me with writing up a code for the following statements: 1. IF the cell is water, THEN no growth is allowed at this cell. 2. IF the cell is road, THEN no growth is allowed at this cell. 3. IF cell is residential OR commercial, THEN keep this cell the same without any change. 4. IF the cell is either forest OR pasture OR row crops AND there are 4 commercial cells in the neighborhood, THEN change the cell to commercial. 5. IF the center cell is either forest OR pasture OR row crops AND there are 4 residential in the neighborhood, THEN change the cell to residential. Many thanks for the help, best Jamal
