Hi, Are you using ArcGIS Explorer Online or Desktop? In the case of ArcGIS Explorer Online - you should take a look at the help on Query Layers (http://explorer.arcgis.com/help/hh_goto.htm#basics_query.htm) and use the Parameters tab on the Query dialog to create your reusable query. In the case of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop, out-of-the-box it doesn't have the same concept of parameterised queries as ArcGIS Explorer Online - because it can support richer and more varied interaction with the data. In the imminent 1500 release there is a new query tool - it's certainly worth taking a look at that. In the mean time, before 1500 is released you could take a look at some "Add-Ins" that have been created as examples: N.B. The following URL will run a search on ArcGIS.com for ArcGIS Explorer Add-Ins: http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=Explorer%20Add-In&t=content. A couple that you could look at specifically are: Query Features: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=187ece93958e4e7a86f918a00df0f36b Query Plus: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=86d1eb20b0564b9f8a528e0e723ae3e6 Regards Mike

Robert, Thanks for the test service - I have just tried this in the imminent ArcGIS Explorer 1500 and the layers seem to display fine. I do not know the details of your WMS but I do know we have fixed an issue relating to WMSs which return specific fixed image sizes so possibly that has resolved the issue. Keep an eye out on the ArcGIS Explorer blog for news of the release! http://blogs.esri.com/Info/blogs/arcgisexplorerblog/default.aspx Regards Mike

Daniel, This is down to the elevation layer within whichever Basemap you have selected. You'll find if you clear the Basemap (on the ribbon click Basemap > Clear Basemap) you can zoom in beyond that. You'll then need your own DEM/DTM (if you want elevation) and you'll need to add some other content to display, either as regular layers or you can create your own Basemap. 1. Add other basemap-esque content e.g. ESRI Imagery: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=483b230c56a44c33beb13f9b9ab9f88d e.g. Bing Imagery: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=25c3f49d4ce3451e8a7f5b5aebccab48 2. Save as Basemap: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200//en/command_save_as.htm Regards Mike

Loren, You might also want to take a look at the new ArcGIS Explorer version 1500 which will be released shortly. There is some new functionality for querying layers (including Shapefiles). It's not a straightforward "search" as such but it is does provide a more powerful query capability. Regards Mike P.S. If you try http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=Explorer%20Add-In&t=content you will see all the ArcGIS Explorer Add-Ins currently on ArcGIS.com.

Achilleas, I have just tested your sample data in ArcGIS Explorer 1500 (due out very soon) and it appears to display in the correct position (as far as I can tell). Here are the steps I took: 1. Open ArcGIS Explorer 2. Set the Basemap to Bing Aerial imagery 3. Click the Explorer button/pearl in top left corner 4. Choose Map Properties 5. Select 2D Coordinate system tab 6. Pick ??Greek_Grid? from the drop down (via <More...> option) 7. In the Geographic Transformations box choose GGRS_1987_To_WGS_1984 8. Click OK 9. Click Add Content > Raster Data... 10. Browse for ??n.gonia_sdian63_58apo1.tif? 11. Click Open 12. This looks OK to me? Regards Mike

Bonnie, 1. The System Requirements for ArcGIS Explorer 1500 are likely to be the same as 1200. I am not aware of any advances in the spec required, although it is always possible that the the specs will be increased slightly at each release - please check http://wikis.esri.com/wiki/display/agxpsr/Home once 1500 has been released. 2. ArcGIS Explorer 1500 will also require OpenGL 2.0 (or greater) support. 3. There is no announced release date but 1500 will be released shortly. As soon as it is released announcements will be made via the ArcGIS Explorer blog (http://blogs.esri.com/Info/blogs/arcgisexplorerblog/default.aspx) and likely Twitter will pick it up too. Regards Mike

Achilleas, RE: Basemap updates: Bing:- You can get the latest info on the Bing update programme here: http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/maps/archive/tags/Content+Updates/default.aspx. ESRI World Imagery:- I am not aware of any published info on anticipated updates. More info on this service can be found here at ArcGIS.com (http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=10df2279f9684e4a9f6a7f08febac2a9) and in the ArcGIS.com Help (http://www.arcgis.com/help/content/esri/contributors_wi.htm). N.B. You could also consider the ESRI World Topographic Map which is updated via the Community Basemaps Programme: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/community-maps.html and http://www.arcgis.com/help/content/esri/contributors_wtm.htm RE: Sample Data If you have a small sample of the data you can send it to mbranscomb@esri.com Regards Mike

Hi, Out of the box ArcGIS Explorer does not offer an export to PDF option. However, there are several free and paid-for PDF converters availabler which you can call programmatically within a custom Add-In (e.g. you might write an "Export to PDF" Button Add-In). I recommend typing, for example, "free PDF converter C#" into your favourite internet search engine - this will reveal some options that you could look into. There are a number of ways to share content with ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1, which are improved again at the imminent ArcGIS Explorer 1500 release - for example through the sharing of Layer Packages. I suggest watching out for this new release rather than invest too much time now in trying to find a way to share content between Explorer and Desktop. Regards Mike

Joshua, I would usually write some code to verify the user input first... so for a string input such as name I would probably do the following (examples in C#): 1. Check that your Textbox.Text is not "" (empty) e.g. if(myTextBox.Text == "") return; OR e.g. if(myTextBox.Text == "") throw New Exception("Please enter some text"); 2. Check that your Textbox.Text is likely to be a valid name string (double has a TryParse() method which returns true if the input string can be cast to a number) See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/3s27fasw.aspx e.g. double tempDouble; if(double.TryParse(myTextBox.Text,out tempDouble) throw New Exception("You entered a number"); 3. Perhaps check that your Textbox.Text is not too short or too long e.g. if(myTextBox.Text.Length < 2 | myTextBox.Text > 100) throw New Exception("Please check the name and try again"); Then because I'm throwing Exceptions above I'd put the whole lot in a Try/Catch statement (in C#): e.g. Try { ... (code above) } catch(Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } Testing the input string like that means you can test possible erroneous scenarios before submitting the query. When you say <null> field or empty string do you mean in the dataset returned from the query? I hope that helps some. Cheers Mike

Bonnie / Bob, A colleague alerted me to a potential drawback with the Intel GMA 965 you mentioned below. I've just been looking into this: if it is the "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family" the Intel website indicates this only supports OpenGL 1.5 rather than the later OpenGL 2.0 required for ArcGIS Explorer (http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intelg965/sb/CS-023713.htm). I don't believe a driver update would move the support up to 2.0 but it's worth trying anyway. You could try checking for a more recent driver: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm. The Intel website also says "Also, exit any running background applications or programs that run in the Windows task bar". Regards Mike

Nicholas, The ArcMap > KML/KMZ shift sounds like it could be a projection issue between the coordinate system you are using in ArcMap, perhaps any transformation you have set for the data frame and the client application (presumed to be ArcGIS Explorer based on the forum), it's coordinate system and again any transformations that are active. However, the Buffer tool click point shift sounds odd - it should capture the point exactly where you click. My guess here would be some issue between capturing the screen click point and converting it to real world coordinates. Perhaps a screen/dpi issue? Regards Mike

Judith, In principle that's exactly what you would do. There is a GetBitmap() method on the MapDisplay class (http://resources.esri.com/help/1200/arcgisexplorer/componenthelp/index.html#/_/0003000001t6000000/) which will perform the same task as the Copy To Clipboard button on the ribbon. This image could then be added to any document you like - which could include documents templates. Bear in mind that the exported map will include the attribution (copyright), scalebar, and navigator. The navigator could be considered a North Arrow though and the scale bar is generally desirable, although if required it can be switched off. It will not be possible to remove any attribution/copyright text. Regards Mike
