@james-rae the api does consider the the symbol size (including size impacting stuff like visual variables that are applied shader side), and should be precise. It just uses a large hittest radius to make it "easier to click," esp. for mobile where it's hard for users to be exactly click on something. We're thinking though that maybe we need to vary this for mobile / desktop, using a smaller radius on the latter.

@james-rae the hittest uses a distance of 6 pixels for the test. Thanks for the feedback regarding the tolerance being too large, I think we just need to provide a way for this to be specified externally. It's a balance between making things precise and "too hard to click," that I think app devs would probably best be deciding for themselves. I'll put in an issue to discuss this. The returned results are unordered. Are you currently using orderBy for your feature layer? We're planning to document/define that behavior for 4.24 and sort returned features top-down.

@LucasScharenbroich for the flag, just use esriConfig instead of dojoConfig.

FYI @RyanSutcliffe, we talked with the server team, and apparently this happens on some backends where the count can unexpectedly take a very long time to return. They've added a different API we can use to get the approximate count, and we're evaluating whether we can move to that for 4.24 (not this next release, but the following one).

I can check whether or not this is the case if I can see what's going on, but upgrading your server to something more recent might also help here. I know there were some PBF issues for earlier version of server... that's the only major difference in terms of querying for server that I can think of ATM.

Another thing that you can also try is disabling PBF mode: Disable PBF (codepen.io)

Yes like @KristianEkenes mentioned, if you can provide us a repro, we can take a look. I'm not aware of why it would be making more requests, all of the layers are AGOL hosted?

Also I don't believe spatial reference and what not gets encoded into VT payloads to begin with. That's in contrast to Feature Tiles where the transformation does actually get encoded into the FetaureSet pbf payload. arcgis-pbf/FeatureCollection.proto at main · Esri/arcgis-pbf (github.com)

Sorry @JINANYI, that's probably as far as I can dive into this ... I think georeferencing in this context is probably something specific to GDAL -- e.g., maybe you can add an image and map vector tiles onto it.

Whoops didn't see your response @JINANYI. These forums get a little borked when reply chains get long. I posted above what I think the reason is.

Bit of a rabbit hole - never used R before. But it looks like the sf library uses GDAL, and the MVT driver for GDAL appears to flip the y on decoding: gdal/ogrmvtdataset.cpp at master · OSGeo/gdal (github.com) Are you seeing any difference between how mbox and esri vtls are handled, and that's causing this question?

Ok I think I see what you are asking. Basically you are wondering why you don't need to flip the y coordinate of the geometries parsed by the st_read method of the R library you are using?

@JINANYI not sure that I understand your repro. The coordinates after you convert them back to map space have positive y up? That would be expected. Positive y being downward is only in tile coordinate space (0-4096 for VectorTiles).

Hi @RyanSutcliffe. Hmm, a MapServer taking 30+ seconds to respond to a count query definitely would cause an issue with the snapshot logic. Would like to take a look at the service and see what's going on. I take it that if you have millions of records, you are probably using a definitionExpression? If a count query without a definitionExpression is massively faster for large MapServer datasets, we potentially may need to add a special path for MapServer to avoid querying the count with it. You can currently disable the snapshot logic with the featurelayer-snapshot-enabled flag. See Disable snapshot (codepen.io). I would highly recommend adding some kind of cache in front of the service though when you have millions of records.
