The current release ArcGIS for AutoCAD already support AutoCAD 2015. Early tests show that ArcGIS for AutoCAD 350 also works unmodified on AutoCAD 2016 although the next release due this summer will be certified on 2016.

The World Imagery and other maps found in the Esri Maps gallery are a map services. Map Services in ArcGIS for AutoCAD are optimized for fast background dynamic display. Based on your screen resolution ArcGIS for AutoCAD is going to fetch an image that looks good on the screen. When you zoom in you get a higher resolution image to cover your screen. When you zoom out you get more area covered by the same resolution of image but at a different scale. If you want to stop the Automatic residing of the image you can zoom in and then set the Map Services properties to display ON DEMAND rather than DYNAMIC that way no matter how far you zoom in or out you'll have the same image size and resolution. You may want to cover more area. In that case you would need to make a separate reference to the same map service to also set it to ON DEMAND and have it cover a different area. All of the Esri Maps Map Service can also be found here by making a connection to the Online Server ( server.arcgisonline.com /ArcGIS/services/). Here is another ArcGIS Online server you can connect to...(http://maps1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/services/) each with lots of useful content. There is a bonus tool on ArcGIS Online and companion video on YouTube that automates this process to cover larger areas with multiple map services at higher resolutions.

Tim, Map services when set to display DYNAMIC-ly will re-size to the "current" Viewport. You can have multiple references to the same map service in your drawing. You can set each of these map service references to draw ON DEMAND. You can then zoom into each viewport one at a time and then request that ONE of those two map service intances redraw to fill your viewport. Then go to the other viewport and REFRESH the OTHER map service instance in that viewport. Then you will have the same map service (although two different instnaces of it) filling the two different viewports in your layout view.

I have updated the Bonus tools for ArcGIS for AutoCAD to include the functionality to create a mosaic or set of map tiles at higher resolution... These bonus tools are found in their normal location on ArcGIS Online for free download: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=103f4d42de804f4ab42ff498026d9ddc

John, The hope is with the next release of ArcGIS for AutoCAD in the spring… April/May is my best guess. Contact me directly if you’d consider being a beta site before then. -Don

Karl, Sorry no. That is a great suggestion and I'll consider that in a future revision. My thought is that it should then honor the current settings on the ribbon when you label, right?

Yes, my suggestion would be to add the imagery twice or in your case a grid of 9 or more images. In the past I had created an AutoLISP routine to build the matrix of these maps automatically, but you can do it manually. To cover the 9 square miles you’d need nine, 3 square mile maps. Or possibly more to cover you 10 sq mile area… Each you would set to “on-demand” and you would have to keep track of the view to zoom in on each and refresh them individually. You would be building a matrix of adjacent map services of the same map service. World_Imagery, World_Imagery1, World_Imagery2, etc… Its probably time to rewrite that lisp routine and make it available to people as a sample again.

No problem, you need to set the map service property to On-Demand. Then it will not refresh unless you request the map service to redraw. You can set the map service properties by right clicking on the map service entry in the [GIS Contents] pane. Then you can zoom into the imagery resolution you want and then refresh the imagery. You can actually add more than one of the same map service and cover a larger area at higher resolution by using this technique. If you do have two of the same map service you will have to control the refresh of each image independently again from the context menu of the map service in the [GIS Contents] pane rather than the REFRESH all button on the Ribbon.

ArcGIS for AutoCAD 350 should allow you to access your secure services on ArcGIS Server 10.2.2. You may need to remove the connection in ArcGIS for AutoCAD and recreate it if you've added secure services after saving your connection in ArcGIS for AutoCAD.

When ArcGIS for AutoCAD is loaded any existing links in the drawing are refreshed. If you are having difficulty with a service, there may be a chance that that service has changed, name location etc... You may need to delete the reference and add it again. I'd be interested if this one of the map services from your server or from ArcGIS online? (The XREF manager will be just pointing to an old temporary image... this is also the .TMP reference you see when ArcGIS for AutoCAD is not loaded.) The map service normally is refreshed dynamically when ArcGIS for AutoCAD initializes when opening the drawing.

Yes, just copy the entities back to the feature service layer. However, this ONLY works if you are adding new features. If you want to allow someone to modify feature service feature classes (even outside your organization and disconnected to your network),as long as they are using ArcGIS for AutoCAD to make the edits they can leave them as FEATURE SERVICE layers in the drawing and whenever you get the drawing back you can SYNCHRONIZE. Feature Services DO work completely disconnected. When adding to new features as long as the schema's match you can move entities in a local feature class to onto an AutoCAD layer of the feature service and that will add the attributed feature to the feature service when you synchronize. -Don

In that case I would suggest using the .DWG not shapefiles. Just wondering, why are you using shapefiles instead of the native .DWG support in ArcMap?
