Dan this may be my misunderstanding of the tool, but wouldn't that really only be beneficial for large features ie: political boundaries or large water features? the features are not large themselves, the total area that the feature encompasses is large. so I'm not sure of the logic under the hood for dissolve just doesnt like the fact that I have 800k "small" features spread out over a large area. for example, fire hydrants, not large features, but a lot of them and spread out all over the state. you'll find most of them in the big cities but they are everywhere. im just not sure the logic with dissolve is built for that to be efficient, or I guess one could somehow group them into small subsets in order to create smaller dissolving task at first. thanks Dave

We were lucky that we were at the point of considering the push to 10.5.1, we have been in your shoes many times where we weren't ready to make the jump to the latest and greatest. good luck! dave

All, Desktop Version 10.2.2 I was curious if anyone else has run into this particular issue before... we have about 50 layers within a file geodatabase that we do a compare on, lets call it "old vs new" and we only want to point out areas that have new or updated data. we only care about changes and nothing else. we create a feature envelope around each feature that is considered "new", we then take those 50 layers and merge them into 1. within that newly created merged layer we have approx 800k features....you guessed it, time to dissolve. unfortunately, from time to time it appears that the dissolve process fails. we have logging in place and we never get any notification that the process has failed, we just go days (we are currently sitting at 2 days) with the last line in our log stating..." dissolving "merged layer name"" the features themselves are not large features, but the area that encompasses all the feature is statewide and not all of the features are within close proximity of one another. is there a more efficient manner of dissolving all these features? any thoughts? dave

Tracy, we were opening Catalog within ArcMAP. the behavior was very sporadic between users and one action would fix one users problem and not others. we were using 10.3.1 and most of our users were using either sql14 or sql16. after talking with esri support and realizing version support we decided to push our timeframe of having all users upgrade to 10.5.1. once we upgraded to 10.5.1 all of our issues were gone. im not sure if that is a solution for you or not. thanks dave

All we have some users have recently had to install sql server(2014 and/or 2016) on their new machines as well as ArcGIS for Desktop. It appears that they have 2012 native client installed on their machine as well. When they double click the "add database connection" within catalog, ArcMAP crashes. any thoughts? thanks Dave

I was going to create a web app where a team of folks could view the data that resides in a virtual environment. This was being done in order to make the process of access the data a little easier for them and they would be able to identify and query information as needed. thanks for the help dave

All, i will admit AGOL is not my best area right now... i have a map in desktop (10.2.2) with 3 features: Addresses (gdb), Roads (gdb & shp), boundaries (shp) the roads and boundaries do a pretty good job at displaying in AGOL (minus labeling issues) but the addresses are EXTREMELY slow to render in the map, sometimes never rendering. im not sure if there is something im missing that could help with the rendering time need for addresses or if its the fact that the addresses are from a gdb. thanks dave

I believe this will be the final update. we have been informed by ESRI that the way were doing things successfully in 10.2.2 is no longer supported in newer version releases. So in short, we will have to redo our python scripts to update map services and locator services. thanks dave

Wanted to provide an update since it has been awhile... as far as geocode services are concerned we found that we had to stop them in a particular order. we found that if there were any composite locators using other locator services, the composite locator needed stopped first. this wasnt any issue in 10.2.2, not sure if that release was just "dumb" and didnt care, but we have noticed in 10.5 and 10.4 that we had to change the order in which our python script went in when stopping services. after we resolved that problem we noticed another....go figure. when stopping/starting services we noticed that at random the service becomes stuck in state where the "real-time" and "configured" states dont match (ie: real-time = started, configured = stopped) what happens then is our script stalls b/c the server never responds with the successful start message to allow our script to move onto the next service to start. the only way we have found to fix this issue is to restart the esri server, and this takes anywhere from 1-5 restarts, not exactly a pretty or acceptable solution. dave
