So we do OD analyses all the time and it's time to make a model but I'm running into problems... 1) I need the user to input: Start time, origin points and destinations points so I set those three variables as parameters and it seems to work..SOLVED (mostly - issue with an additional parameter of output OD layer name) 2) But I need specific fields to be mapped (field mappings) for future steps. I need to be able to set the "Name" of the Origin and Destination points. Preferably programmatically - I want to model to fail if these fields don't exist. NOT SOLVED 3) As I'm trying to do this step by step before I run the whole thing I want to just make the OD cost matrix layer and add the origins and destinations and that is the end of this part of the model but I have NO idea where this layer now lives and how to get it on my display. I have "add to display" checked off for each step but nothing shows up in my Network Analyst (or regular) TOC. I see the layers when I run the model in the drop down for selecting input locations but I can't see or delete...I think they are stored in the mxd but I can't access or view. Doing my best to explain the steps I need to do. Thanks...

The ideal is trying to replicate what Microsoft MapPoint did... Put in a list of addresses (csv - just explaining that will be a trial) and get a map and print it - all points on one map - sometimes labeled and sometimes not. Real estate survey maps - options, competitors, etc. Aerial or tiled map map. OR Put in a list of addresses (or lat/longs from another source) and make an image of each point separately (like a map book in ArcMap). These are also real estate survey maps for offices all over the country and some international locations. These people are not GIS people and are not going to, for the most part, use an alternate service to get lat/long and one by one geocoding is not very useful either when you have 30 locations and the broker wants it yesterday (which is why I'm trying to find a solution for them). The ESRI geocode is fine and we'd have to accommodate for the ridiculous credit usage system if this were to be embraced by our employees for these "simple" maps. I know I sound maybe defeated. I've been using ESRI products for something like 18+ years and I'm a fan but this current iteration and the move back to the credit system on top of everything else is frustrating. Plus, my company isn't buying into this completely so I'm cobbling stuff together and I don't know everything about everything ESRI Programming is useful but it just doesn't stick with me (believe me I've tried!) and there is no one else here who can program for us and we can't hire anyone... But I will keep exploring and trying to learn programming!

Tim - I definitely will... the idea was to try to allow a larger number of non-GIS like people (via AGOL Org) the ability to geocode and make simple maps (a la MapPoint) to put into other documents (usually PowerPoint or Word - sad to say). It seems counter-intuitive that I would have to create an App to allow my internal employees to place points and make a print out. But if that's what it takes to do this simple thing without ArcServer I'm game to try it out. The telling moment will be if I discover that I can map an app from which they can print but they can't import and geocode points. But perhaps that's my inability to program shining through Thanks for the suggestion...

So frustrating. We have 3 people. And we have AGOL Org, BA Desktop, ArcMap and a few extensions. That's not a small amount of money. And every time we try to do something that we *used* to be able to do with the products we replaced or have become obsolete we can't.

And what if we do not have ArcServer? Many, many of us do not have that and did not expect to need that to merely print something in a usable format... I guess this is still a problem a year and a half later...since most questions like this have no answers or point people to ArcServer.

It would seem that ESRI is silent on this issue. Unless you have also purchased ArcServer for another upteen thousand dollars and have someone who knows how to use it for your 2 or 3 people. I thought AGOL would be a useful replacement for Microsoft MapPoint (which is being retired) but I'm finding that is not the case (at this point). I'm disappointed and sorry that I don't have an answer for you (or me as I'm having the same problem).

I see the variations but I second the "print it" suggestion. There often seems to be a lack of "clearness" when viewing graphics items or even vector items in the layout view in ESRI and in the pdfs.

So before the upgrade we could click on the little mailbox and browse for the necessary table on our computer to geocode with no problems and post upgrade we have to add the table to mxd and then geocode? That seems like a regression in functionality. Also, the error implies that there is a query or selection set attached to our desired dataset when in fact we can't actually access our dataset (at least as we were used to doing). There is no dataset yet when we get this error.

Do I maybe need to (but please please no) make my own network for these cities based on the fancy BA streets network that we are using?

Thanks for the response - I've just recently seen your page regarding GTFS and ESRI streets networks. Very excited to check that out. Regarding using distances rather than "walk" times - I'm still not sure I think that will work... I got to thinking about it and pedestrians can walk anywhere (well, sort of ) and one-way restrictions do not apply to them. Many of my analyses are done in cities - even if I do distance it will be the distance that a car would take not a pedestrian. So, one-way street are the biggest problems. Any way to turn that off? This would still have been a problem using the old, non-traffic influenced dataset. I just hadn't realized it. And to say that the analysis Setting of "walking" ( "Walking" is a restriction attribute that simply prohibits travel on certain roads that are not appropriate for pedestrians. ) is sort of counter-indicative when compared to the other "restrictions". This may be the case but it doesn't seem logical. When I select "Driving an Automobile" I've assumed that Network Analyst thinks I'm driving an automobile. So when I select "Walking" I'd like to assume that Network Analyst thinks that I'm walking but I've seen nothing that backs up either of these assumptions. Any thoughts?

Hi - I've spent some time with a great ESRI customer service rep on this topic but so far we have not found a solution so I thought I'd try here as well... I'm using ArcGIS 10.1 (lowest level - whatever they are calling it these days) and the NAVTEQ Q411 streets data that comes with BA 10.1. So, with the prior version of the streets network (the *.rs) file in order to get a walk time polygon we'd change all of the street speeds to 3 mph and we'd get a moderately valid walk time polygon. The new version of the streets network and the new Network Analyst interface which utilizes (so far yet mostly undocumented) historic traffic speeds (for driving), and some vague sort of average for non-time dependent driving analyses. There is an option under Layer Properties>Analysis Settings to set a "restriction" to "Walking" The result of this shows that I can walk approximately 3-4 MILES in 10 MINUTES. Nope. No go there. So the question is: 1) What am I doing wrong? 2) How is NA evaluating walking? Please help me!! A lot of things hinge on my obtaining correct walk times OD and "trade area" polygons. Thanks, Nif

Nathan - Yeah, that's what I was wondering. However, we have 3 GIS users and there is no way that our company is going to buy us a server. AGO just seemed so promising. The three potential solutions I see so far are and none are ideal, two allow the data to just be out there: 1) Not searchable, but public. Accessible via AGO by login (Organization) or by specifically shared link. 2) Not searchable, but public. Accessible via AGO by login (Organization) or by password protected link. 3) Not public. Have some user level so that each client has their own organizational login to the products made for them but we would not be charged for each one of them as a separate user. No reason we'd buy a 200 user license if only 3 of us are actually using the product and the other 197 are just viewing products. It turns out that if you don't put important (i.e. logically searchable) tags into your tags your item will most likely not be found except by those with whom you've shared the link. However, any maps, applications etc you make will show up in that most recent maps section of the home page - meaning someone can scrape that page and get anything they want. It's not that I think that there is some malicious person out there scraping for important data but that it can be done. And our clients do not want their confidential information out there.
