Without discussing the details of the inner workings of ArcGIS Server, I can say that both are required to provide application server functionality and the ability to host web services.

Scott, You will first have to save your web map. With the map open, click Share and you should see an option for Make a Web Application at the bottom. It will be greyed out until you share your web map first either with a group, your organization or everyone. Hope this helps! - Daniel

The javaw.exe processes provide basic application server functionality and the ability to host web services, they are started automatically when the server is started. Seeing two of them is expected. You can tell that a javaw.exe process is associated with ArcGIS Server by looking at the Command Line column in Windows Task Manager. If the path includes the ArcGIS installation directory, you know it's a process associated with ArcGIS Server. You can derive further information about each process by examining its full command. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//0154000003p4000000 Hope this helps! - Daniel

There have been intermittent issues with hosted feature service publishing and related work flows this morning, you can monitor the status on the ArcGIS Online Health Dashboard (http://status.arcgis.com/). The issue is being addressed and should be resolved soon, my guess would be the behavior you're experiencing is a result of this. Thanks, - Daniel

Alberto, If this user belongs to another organization, you can invite him to join a group and you can share the items with that group that you'd like to provide access to. If they do not belong to another organization, you can invite them into your organization. If your concern is that you don't want them to be able to create content, you can limit their role to just "user" rather than "publisher" or "admin" Hope this helps! - Daniel

If you have it open in ArcMap, you can right click on the layer in the table of contents > Data > Export data. However, adding it as a zipped shapefile to the ArcGIS.com map viewer will not give you good results, it is a large amount of data (130,000 records) and will not perform well in your web browser.

The link you referenced takes you to page where you can download the layer package or open it in ArcMap. If you open it in ArcMap, you can export the .sdc file into a shapefile or geodatabase feature class which can then be published as a hosted service. However, as the extent of the data covers the entire world, publishing a tiled map service may not be feasible as it would require potentially millions of tiles. Furthermore, publishing a hosted feature service is not feasible either as there are over 130,000 records in the dataset and it would not perform well dynamically. You may be better off using the lat long grid from the second link your referenced, this is a simple map service hosted on http://edumaps.esricanada.com that performs fairly well. Hope this helps! - Daniel

Tony, As DEM's are raster datasets the most viable option would be to publish them as hosted tiled map services assuming you have a subscription for ArcGIS Online. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/#/Hosted_tiled_map_services/01w10000003r000000/ http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/#/Publishing_a_hosted_tiled_map_service_to_ArcGIS_Online_using_an_ArcMap_document/01w100000052000000/ Hope this helps! - Daniel

Dennis, I would make sure that the data in your map document is sourced to the same database connection that you've registered. Try manually registering that database connection either in Catalog or Server Manager by importing it and navigating to the folder where you know it's stored. Also, create a new map document and add the data from the same database connection in the same location and try publishing again. Thanks, - Daniel

Matt, Is your service URL using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN)? For instance, this is an example of a FQDN: ServerName.domain.com/arcgis/rest/services This example is not qualified with the domain name: ServerName/arcgis/rest/services When outside your domain you'll need to use the FQDN for that resource to be located. Another comment in this thread mentioned using the IP adderess which is also an option. IF you take the applications out of the equation, can you simply reach the REST endpoint for that service URL? Thanks, -Dan

The work flow for exposing your services externally with ArcGIS Server 10.1 is to install a component called the Web Adaptor which will integrate your existing web server and forward requests to your GIS server. For more information on the Web Adaptor you can refer to this documentation: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//01540000028p000000 Thanks, - Daniel

Lyndy, You can think of a tiled map service as a cached map service. When you create a map cache, the server draws the entire map at several different scales and stores copies of the map images. It's much quicker for the server to return a cached image than to draw the map each time someone requests it. For more information on map caching, you can refer to this resource page: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/What_is_map_caching/01540000048q000000/ Feature services have the underlying data exposed and allow for editing; new features can be added and existing features can be deleted or updated. Tiled map services cannot be edited as they simply provide images of the data. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/What_is_a_feature_service/0154000002w8000000/ Thanks, Daniel

You may be running into a bug. NIM087311: "Map labels do not work in a map service if the feature class resides in an ArcSDE database and is joined to a table." This bug is listed as resolved in version 10.2. Documented workaround: Publish a map service using ArcMap 10.1 with no service pack to ArcGIS Server 10.1 SP1.

This issue has been identified as a bug: NIM080606: "An ArcGIS Online hosted feature service can only be overwritten if it is located in the user's root content directory" This is the documented workaround: 1) Save a Service Definition file to the computer (instead of overwriting an existing service). 2) In AGOL, go the existing Service Definition file's description page and select the Update button to overwrite it with the new Service Definition file on the computer.

Is your map document in layout view or data view? It needs to be in data view to publish. You can either use the icons at the bottom of the data frame to toggle back and forth or go to View > Data View.
