Ah! sorry I just realized I can't put a path in that function's argument. Ok but anyways the setting up workspace option is not working either. import arcpy ... sourceWorkspace = "C:\\Users\\tx8p90\\Desktop\\Lesson2" ... targetProjection = "C:\\Users\\tx8p90\\Desktop\\python excercise data\\Lesson1\\contourlines.shp" ... arcpy.env.workspace = sourceWorkspace ... listDataSet = arcpy.ListDatasets() ... try: ... for x in listDataset: ... outputDataset = sourceWorkspace + "\\projected_" + x ... arcpy.Project_management(x, outputDataset, targetProjection) ... print "Reprojection successful" ... except: ... print arcpy.GetMessages() ... print "failed" What could be the problem then?

Hi I actually tried setting up the workspace already although I think its not necessary as long as you give a path in the ListDataset() function. Anyways even doing that hasn't made any difference. I get the same syntax error. Regarding the arguments, since I need to change projection for all the files in that folder irrespective of feature type, I don't need to set any arguments like starting letter or feature type. Is that not so? Salman

By shapefile that you have already uploaded do you mean you uploaded another shape file before? Was it zipped with all its contents? Did you not upload it the same way as you did this new shape file?

I have started learning Python for ArcGIS last week and have a simple script to reproject all the datasets in a folder. The script says "syntax error- invalid syntax" but I can't find anything. Can someone please have a look? It seems something very basic but I'm pretty new so I don't see it at the moment. Also running this in ArcGIS prints "failed" right away. And the files are in place in the right folders. I have already checked. import arcpy ... sourceWorkspace = "C:\\Users\\tx8p90\\Desktop\\Lesson2" ... targetProjection = "C:\\Users\\tx8p90\\Desktop\\python excercise data\\Lesson1\\contourlines.shp" ... listDataSet = arcpy.ListDatasets(sourceWorkspace) ... try: ... for x in listDataset: ... outputDataset = sourceWorkspace + "\\projected_" + x ... arcpy.Project_management(x, outputDataset, targetProjection) ... print "Reprojection successful" ... except: ... print arcpy.GetMessages() ... print "failed"

Hi Kelly, Thank you so much. This was my mistake. I just uploaded a layer file and then a layer package and was not able to open it up in the map viewer. Now I will upload it as a shape zip file as a feature service. Then it should work perfectly.

I have a very similar question- Can maps/layers created in ArcGIS desktop be opened in the online Version? I uploaded one of my ArcGIS desktop layers online. It was successfully uploaded but I see only one option to open it 'Open with ArcGIS desktop'. Can't I open it with online map viewer? Or is this too great a Task for the fragile online platform? lol

I want to create a walkability network for the city of Dortmund such that it includes all the line features that are walkable like footways, pedestrian streets etc. I downloaded OSM shape file from Geofarbrik website and now I see that there are a lot of inconsistencies in the roads data. Lots of streets are not classified as highway or footway or anything. Lots of footways are not present at all. Names of streets are missing and many more things like that. Now ofcourse I am aware that this is a consequence of using open source data and we have to deal with such inconsistencies that are a part of publicly sourced data almost always. But I just need to know if there is a better way to create a such a walkability network which could achieve some standard of accuracy rather than now editing all of the data by myself by adding or correcting all walkable polylines in this network using may be google maps or something to see if there is actually a footway in a particular street or not or if its walkable or not. That is gonna be one hell of a work. Phew!

I created a choropleth map for Portland showing distances from the city center. Now the problem is after I set any symbology to the map, it dissapears when zooming in after a certain extent. Show map at all scales option is checked in the layer properties. So I don't understand what else can effect this dissapearance. It is a problem for me because the same thing then happens in layout view and I cannot print out my maps with zoomed in view. Please if someone can think of a solution it would be great.

Hi, I creataed a simple service layer polygon in network analyst(ArcGIS Desktop 10.2) with no heirachies set in the street network. Now I don't udnerstand why is this polygon created along some particular streets? Why isn't is properly spread out? For example why doesnt the polygon cover the areas/streets I have marked in red?(obviously those marked areas are also within 1km atleast, then why not form there?) The impedence is 1km and 2kms respectively. The streets are also well connected individual line elements as you can see the junctions. Thanks alot!

Hi David, I think I now perfectly understand the difference. Defining is just telling ArcGIS which cordinate system the file already has. Using the project tool is the actual thing, I mean changing the projection to a projected cordinate system. You examples were very helpful. Thank you.

Hi, Even though I work a lot on ArcGIS it is still not clear in my head. What is the difference when we project a shape file using the 'projections and transformations' option in toolbox and if we do that just by right clicking in catalog-->XY coordinate system-->and select the required projection. 1. A file already having a GCS does not get projected just by doing the right click method? 2. A file with no spatial reference does not get projected by the right click method? Then what is the use of this right click thing (defining)? Im so confused! Plz explain someone.
