Hello My previous question had to do with QuickReport template, but I am trying to combine the functionality of the two and am working simultaneously on both to get them to where they are actually ready to be combined. I plan to use the MapPage from MapViewer as my landing page in the QuickReport template and have almost got it to function in the way that I am intending for the app that I am creating. I have run into two issues. First, is there a way to remove the measure tool from the header bar? I have placed visible:false under the ControlIcon for the measure tool icon, however it does not disappear. When I remove code for the measure tool within the page I run into two issues; (1) the legend for the feature within the map stops working and/or (2) the MapPage opens on the measure page and no other buttons work. Second, is there a way to declare what attributes I want to appear in the legend window when a feature is selected? I only want three things to appear. If so, is there also a way to order them? Thank you.

Hello I am slowly making progress with this steep AppStudio learning curve. It is definitely challenging, but that is a good thing. I am trying to deconstruct the Quick Report Template as I only need to be able to do the following: add a point from the users location, attach photographs, and populating an attribute table. If I look at the StackView from the QuickReportApp.qml file and run the template, I only need the Select Report Type (PickTypePage.qml), Add Location (RefineLocationPage.qml), Select Media (AddPhotoPage.qml), and Add Details (AddDetailsPage.qml), and the Thank You page (cannot find that qml file). My first hurdle, is understanding how the PickTypePage.qml is configured. I cannot figure out how to have only one point option. Where is the list of points stored? Even when I open the SubTypePicker.qml file I am unable to discern how this list of options is stored. Alternatively, I thought about using the ReportGalleryPage.qml instead of the PickTypePage.qml since I could add some text to the choices. However, I am having the same issue in that I cannot figure out where or how you can change the details of the choices presented. For example, how would I only have the first option "Wildfire Response Points"? And, if I can get rid of the line and polygon options, how do I change the text contained within? I should note that the feature layer that people will be adding their observations in the field to will only be points. Once I can figure out a more intuitive and elegant way to simply add points I am sure I will have a barrage of questions to follow. Thanks Garrett

Hi Erwin Thank you so much for the note. I think that my largest frustration is that AppStudio is touted as an easy solution to app development and I would say that it has a much steeper learning curve than advertised. Even for the templates, it still requires a fair amount of coding and code dissection. Even after watching all the videos from the workshop and working through some of the examples included in AppStudio it is rather difficult to know what is actually going on. Moving forward I would suggest adding more comments into the template files so that people know what the code means and what it is doing. For example, when I do data analysis in R, particularly for a published article, I include comments in every line so that people can replicate it rather easily. There is no context for much of the code and I think that adding these comment lines would not be something that is difficult to include. I do think that there is promise for AppStudio, though I would probably not advertise it as an easy option for app development.

Hello Everyone. I am trying to combine some of the basic functionality of the QuickReport and MapViewer templates. I would like some simple functionality from the QuickReport template, that is allowing people to take pictures and populate an attribute table in the field as well as some of the simple functionality of the MapViewer template where users will have a map that can be used to navigate to the places where the pictures and attribute data were collected using the QuickReport functionality. I have watched all the AppStudio 2020 workshop videos and completed all the demonstrations and feel as though I have hardly scratched the surface when I compare those exercises with the amount of coding that is happening in the templates. Which is to be expected since it seems like coding is a necessary skillset when trying to decipher these "template" apps. Even looking at all the coding that is present in these templates, before even getting to the page, is a bit overwhelming. My issue now is that I am not sure what the most logical path is to take with the development of this app. I thought about literally combining the two templates and whatever I do not need would just sit unused but I cannot figure out how to create subfolders in Qt Creator. My issue with not being able to combine them is that they both have different folder structures and names. Same for starting from a blank slate. Even if I were to copy and paste from the templates I would need to set up these sub folders, and it does not seem like Qt Creator has an intuitive way to do so, especially on a Mac. I have about three weeks to get a somewhat functioning version to my client and I am willing to accept any advice about what is the best route to take with this. Each day goes by with me staring at and trying to decipher the code in the templates and it has not really worked out for me thus far as it can all become a bit overwhelming. Thanks and sorry for the rant.

Hello Thank you so much. I am going to start watching them now. I watched a video from 2019 where you had the Angeles Crest 100 as an example. I am also an ultra runner and feel like the development of this app will be like running a 100-mile race. If nothing else, running long distances teaches one to try and keep moving forward.

Hello I am trying to combine functionality of Quick Report and Map Viewer templates, or alternatively create a new custom app that will allow me to pick and choose the functionality contained in both. When I watch the configuring videos online about both Quick Report and Map Viewer I am left wanting much more detail than simply changing logos, photos, and/or linking to web maps. I would really like a more in-depth understanding of the architecture of the apps when I open them in Qt Creator. When I look at the Quick Report project in Qt Creator I have a list of files and folders. I would really like to understand what these files and folders do. For example, I have a "pages" folder. Are these different pages in the app? If so, how are these pages called up? I think that it would be very beneficial for me to understand what is happening in the background so that I can make this app that I am creating functional for its purpose. It would also allow me to also provide other apps in the future that can solve my client's needs. Ultimately, are there books, websites, instructional videos, etc.. that focuses on this background or the Qt Creator side of app development? Thanks

Hello Erwin Thank you. I am going to start development with Quick Report this weekend. I like your suggestions and I think that they only functionality from Map Viewer will be the pop up attributes, particularly since there will be photos attached to the points that people can use for identification. Will people be able to see the map at all times when using Quick Reports and also be able to navigate to those points? Or is this something that Map Viewer will need to be used for? I should note that navigation does not mean step-by-step directions, rather it would place the point on a trail that is available on the basemap. People could use the location of their cell phone once they get closer. That is is the only way that I can think about doing directions to a feature, unless there is another solution. I am sure that I will have more questions, but thank you for everything thus far.

Hello I am working on a Survey123 project where there will be five to six study areas where field data will be collected. I am interested in how to best identify the study area where the data was collected when I am exporting the data. The survey will be used by a group of volunteers so I want to ensure that there is consistency in the study area reporting. Here are some options that I have considered, though I am not sure if they would work. Using a basemap that has the predefined study areas loaded on them and then make that one of the questions on the survey. Downloading the data into ArcMap or ArcGIS Online and then counting the number of observations by study area. Exporting those results by location (study area). These are just my initial thoughts but I hope that there might be a more elegant solution available. Thanks

Hi Erwin Thank you so much for all the correspondence. Would you suggest starting with one of the two templates, Map Viewer or Quick Report, and then building off of that? I would assume that more is already built into the Quick Report template. Though, I was wondering if it is possible to use the Map Viewer template and then to have a button or something of the sort that would allow the user to capture a photo (feature) while they are using the Map Viewer template based app in the field. When the camera is used, there would be an affiliated form that users can fill in. I think that a button or something of the sort would be a more elegant way to integrate Quick Report into Map Viewer, but I am not sure if that is possible? From what I understand, the Map Viewer template would also have to have a feature layer where these photos could be linked to in order for this to possibly work? Does that make sense? Thanks again

Hi Thanks for the suggestion. I am trying to deploy this app, for free, to the general public or members of our community. It looks like AppStudio player is more tailored to organizations working with smaller groups? I want users to have both key functions in one location and not to have to switch between the two apps depending on if they are collecting data or using the map to navigate in the field. Does that make sense? Maybe I will have to do some code combining to accomplish my task.

Hello I know that this question has been asked before, but I have yet to find a satisfying answer and since there was an update to AppStudio recently I thought there might be a more elegant or easier solution. I am creating an app that will utilize the key functions of Map Viewer and Quick Report. I am aiming to have people go out in the field and collect observations (features) that will include photographs and other attributes selected from a form (Quick Report). I would then like to display these field collected features on a map so that other users can navigate and locate them (Map Viewer). There are areas that users will be going without cell phone coverage so being able to have offline maps is another important function. I envision that most users will be using the Map Viewer functions, while a smaller number will be using the Quick Report functions. Based on the fact that most people will probably be using the Map Viewer functions, I think that I should build off of that template, adding the Quick Report functionality that can be accessed from the map. What I am confused about is how to integrate the two templates, as in where would one be able to even start to combine the two? Do I open and copy the code that I want from Qt Creator? Alternatively, would it be better to start from scratch and use the code from both in Qt Creator? Another goal of this project, though later down the road, is to have the field collected features integrated into an online map/dashboard/story map. From my understanding the features collected in the field are automatically updated? Hopefully this all makes sense and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Erwin Thanks for the response. I am thinking about combining two templates, Quick Report and Map Viewer. As I understand it, I will have to do some coding in QT in order to combine them. A little background on the project might help out. We are interested in documenting locations of historical Arborglyphs (carvings on trees) in our region. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Basque and Irish sheepherders would carve initials, pictures, and other insignia into trees. As these trees reach the end of their lifespans, mostly 90-100 years, these artifacts are in danger of being lost. We envision the app that we develop as a way to both document these carvings through photographs and geolocations. We hope that users will have the ability to both take geotagged photographs of the carvings and also be able to navigate to locations where these geotagged photographs were taken. As part of the project, we also want to have a dedicated website where people can view a map that will also include the locations and pictures of the carvings. As for the initial questions I will be a bit more detailed below. 1. I do not want to do this automatically. Rather, I just want the ability to delete inappropriate photographs, if they are taken. I imagine that photos are saved as attributes of a feature so I could just delete that feature. 2. With Quick Report, people can record observations in the field. I then want people to be able to navigate to those observations as well. I was not sure how immediate observations would be recorded into map viewer? So if I was out in the field and recorded an observation, how long would it take before it was uploaded to the map viewer side of the app? 3. Thanks for the Dashboard recommendation that will definitely work for the website. 4. Thanks for the idea, it might be above my pay grade, so if it gets too complicated I will probably just get the Developer license. Thank you again for the responses. I think that I will be starting the project in the next couple of weeks and will definitely be active on this forum since there are a lot of questions that I will have. G

Hello Everyone. I am embarking on the creation of my first app using AppStudio and I am sure that I will be interacting with this community frequently throughout the process. I will more than likely be using and combining the Map Viewer and Quick Report templates as I want people to be able to collect field observations that will be able to be navigated to by other users. There are a few questions that I have before I start to develop. 1. Is there a way to ensure that photos that are taken are appropriate before they are posted onto the app (i.e., that there is no adult content uploaded). 2. How are the field observations integrated into the app so that people can navigate to them in the future? Does it update each time an observation is taken or does a manager have to update it? 3. Can you integrate the app so that the data can be displayed on a dedicated website, maybe something like a Story Map or a Dashboard so that people that cannot go out to the field can view them from a computer/tablet/mobile device? 4. Without a developer license, can you still post the app on the Apple and Google app stores? Thanks so much and I look forward to this journey that I am about to embark on. G

Hello All I hope all are safe, healthy, and sane. I am developing an ArcGIS Online map that I will be hosting on a website. Is there a way to have certain layers displayed when the map is first viewed? For example, if I have ~10 layers and I would only like 3 of them to be shown initially, is there way to do this? Thanks and have a great one.

Hello I am trying to create a pseudo heat map from a points data set (trailhead locations) that contains the number of visitors in various years at these locations. Since I am not concerned about the density of points, what is needed for a normal heat map, but instead the number of people at the trailheads, this is not a traditional trailhead. I have tried to create a grid of hexagons and use spatial join but this does not give me the results I am looking for. The only way that I have come up with is to use the graduated symbols. However, I want to create a gradient of colors for the different symbols, is there a way to do this? Thanks
