Hi Don, Welcome to Esri Forums! Thank you for posting your question here. I don't think it is possible to modify the background color of an ArcGIS Online basemap. I assume you are referring to the standard basemaps set in the map constructor? One option for you would be to publish your own custom tiled map service as a basemap in ArcMap. Another option, probably less desirable, would be to set the transparency of the basemap using the ArcGISTiledMapServiceLayer class, so that another layer may show through more easily. Hi Tom, Yes, this is a bit confusing. The reason for this difference is that while FeatureLayers are graphics that can be modified (renderer) on the clientside, DynamicMapServiceLayers are graphics that come from ArcGIS Server (a PNG or other raster format), and can be modified on the serverside. I think the SimpleRenderer is able to be set for DynamicMapServiceLayers because it is changing all symbology to one new symbology, whereas the ClassBreaksRenderer is actually requiring some processing and decision making, so it requires a LayerDrawingOptions method to do some work on the serverside. Typically, we recommend customers work with FeatureLayers when there is a need for end users to interact with clientside geometry and attributes immediately, such as with the ClassBreaksRenderer. In thinking this over some more, I think the issue is related to the way the renderer is applied. Hi Alex, Are you sure that the service requests are going through the proxy? Both Firefox and Safari have pretty good CORS support, even going back several versions, but IE 9 does not. I do not have any other ideas regarding IE9 right now, but I would be curious to see the results of using a more recent version of IE. Thanks, -Noah ... View more

Hello Luci, Hard to say what the trouble is, but it sounds like the proxy may not be configured correctly. Have you confirmed that the proxy is healthy by testing a valid URL in the browser? example: http://pathtoproxy/proxy.ashx?http://www.esri.com Other things to consider: 1) If you watch the web traffic when the application loads, do you see successful calls to the proxy page? 2) Is the path to the proxy page correct in the JavaScript code?
