Thibault, Maybe this and this will answer some questions? It looks like they use the census data. Hope this helps! Tim

Jason, I use a composite locator myself with the same styles you use and I don't have this problem. Do you need both SufType1 and Suftype2?

John, this is only possible with later versions of ArcGIS. You can however change the order of your attributes in an MXD. Right-click the layer in your TOC and click properties. Go to the "Fields" tab and then on the left side you can move fields up and down to rearrange them. Tim

Pierre, you could right click the Clip tool in your Arc Toolbox and then click "Batch" to clip multiple features at once. Or if you are a little handy with ArcPy, this script can do it for you.

If you can't come up with a different solution you might want to create a new point layer and then use, Create Random Points along your lines using, a field in your line layer that identifies how many points there need to be? Another place to look might be working with representations?

When you say "editing a map" do you mean the layers in a map? Anyone can open an MXD and save it. The same goes for layers (shapefiles, geodatabase) The only way to limit editing is if you have a SDE Server.

Michael, you are right this is the only way at the moment to label. You can do the same thing if you have an organizational account without a local ArcGIS server, but this will cost credits.

Christopher, I know there is a standard provided by NENA that is used nation wide. I don't know why everyone follows that standard? It would make it a lot easier to share data between agencies, counties and even nationwide. I know we are sharing data with our surrounding counties and it helps a lot. We recently switch to a new mapping software, that is largely based around ESRI geodatabases and MXD's, which makes customization a lot easier, without relying on vendor support. I assume you are a dispatcher at the moment? I'm glad that you start familiarizing yourself with ESRI technologies, since I see a lot of mapping vendors moving towards that. Just to let you know, I am a GIS Analyst for 11 dispatch centers, so if you have any more questions feel free to ask! Tim

Julian, You could use the intersect tool, to cut your line whenever it crosses a polygon. You can then calculate the length of each feature. After that you could do a Spatial join, with which you can bring over the length field of your lines. That should be the amount each county has to take care.

You can create a new field and then use the field calculator, via python, using if statements to return values. i.e. if it is more than 20% return 1, if it is less than 20% return 2 and if it is exactly 20% return 3. You would then be able to use this field identify what you need. I'm sorry I can't help you with the code, but you maybe should ask in the python forum here to get the code you need. I know this is not exactly what you want to hear, but I'm just letting you know it is possible 🙂
