Why do basemaps disappear?

It seems that the ESRI basemaps either disappear (go blank) or display a message about Data Not Available Yet when the ArcGIS Online map is zoomed in very closely. Why is that?

Which basemap and region are you looking at when that happens? Since the basemap is created cached, sometimes there is no cache available if zoomed in too far.

This happens with the Streets, Topographic, Terrain With Labels, Light Gray Canvas, and OpenStreetMap etc. for the area below South Georgian Bay, Ontario (Stayner, Creemore, New Lowell, etc.).

I may need to create and use my own basemap layers to continue to see streets zoomed in closely?

I have the same problem. I have other vector and raster layers added to the map but when I go from an aerial basemap to a street basemap, subsequent operations blank the basemap. I have to click again on the streets map from the gallery to show the streets basemap. Did you ever find a solution to this?
