If you are in an MXD, after you perform the join, right-click your layer and click Data -> Export Data... The new shapefile should have the join in it and permanent. Or you could use this tool, to make it permanent.

I don't know to be honest, did you look at my attachment? I think when I did it, it worked.

I got the error when I tried to save my output in a geodatabase, which might have something to do with this. Did you try to save the output as a shapefile or as a feature class in a geodatabase?

Mike, I was able to successfully merge it. Just make sure you save your output as a shapefile (in the output box type merge.shp) I have attached the successful merge. Tim

I put both shapefiles in a MXD, ran a merge and looked up the error number which states: "A value could not be added to the output field. For example, text values cannot be added to numeric fields, and text values cannot be added to text fields if the values are longer than the field length." You can rightclick each field in the attribute table and see in properties what type of field it is.

Mike, the issue lies within the field "bench_cond". In one of your shapefiles it is setup as a string field and in your other shapefile it is setup as a short field. Meaning it can't combine your words into the number field. Rename one of your fields (add a new field with a new name and calculate the new field with the old field and then delete the old field). Or setup both fields to allow numbers and strings, if you need them combined. The same thing happens with your "through_con" field. It might be all your condition fields actually, since in one shapefile they use numbers as conditions and in the other one words. Tim

I think the best you can do is what I have posted. It seems, as you said, it has been made through a program like Illustrator.

Mark, First transform you contours into a raster using this tool. After that use this tool to create the effect you want. Hope this helps! Tim

If you use ArcGIS Desktop, you can use the attribute assistant straight up. Only the field crew can't use it since it is an ArcGIS Desktop add-in.

Tom, you don;t need to do anything in Arc SDE, just build a gdb create the domains and layers you want. Once that is created open an empty mxd, import one of your layers and setup the symbology you would like (create some example points to setup the symbology). Once that is done follow the steps of the link. Make sure to only check feature service and uncheck tiled map. Once in Collector the user will be able to place a new point and choose, from drop downboxes the domains you have set up.

Tom, how to upload a feature service is described here. You can't however automatically populate attributes through the collector app. You might be able to write a javascript for that, but I am not sure. What I would do is calculate those fields at a later time, via the attribute assistant, once the field collection is done. Tim
