While adding a script as a tool, I'm specifying parameters for a Python script. One of my outputs is a feature class; it cannot be a shapefile since the field names are cropped and the script will fail. Specifying the data type as 'Feature Class' still allows the user specify a shapefile as output, how can I ensure that the only possible output is a geodatabase feature class? In the Parameters tab of the script tool properties, you can specify Shapefile as the output data type. This should work.

If you right click on your script tool .. create variable .. field argument. This will create a model element for that script tool argument. then in your model you can connect that model element to the next tool (assuming it's a field object). An annoying issue is when the input is a string (say the name for Add Field) you sometimes need to convert the type - this can be done with the Calculate Value tool which can be set to return an object of specified type. (ie a Field object)

I'm using the Point Distance tool to calculate the distance between points in 2 datasets within 1 km of each other. However, my output is in (I'm assuming) decimal degrees even though I specify km or m. I have tried projecting in several different coordinate systems (State Plane, Behrmann, NAD83, etc.) with no change. I read a previous post on the same topic and the suggestion was to change the projection, so does anyone have another suggestion? Sarah - make sure your projection is "taking". I think the best processing flow for doing this interactively is 1- set the data frame in arcmap to a coordinate system that is appropriate for distance (say, UTM, state plane) 2- right click the layer for each data set in tern and export to a temporary feature class or shapefile, be sure and choose to export in the data frame coordinate system 3- open the point distance tool and open "Environments" to make sure the coordinate system output is default 4- go ahead and run the tool.

Sounds like the download is corrupted. Please try installing it from the ArcGIS Desktop installation disk. Warning to all!: Do NOT install Python 2.6 - the version you should use is on the install media in the Desktop\PythonWin folder. (2.5.1 for arc 9.3.1, 2.6.2 for arc 10.0, etc).

The 10.0 online help recommends this in extreme passive voice: When creating tools that will be shared later, it is best to store a copy of all your base materials (toolboxes and Python files) locally for safekeeping without any password protection. This means if you have a toolbox with half a dozen script every time you do an update you need to right click on each script tool to import the updates. It would be really nice to right click on a toolbox and be able to "import all scripts".

Thanks, it looks like I had forgotten to check out the Spatial extension on my 9.3 geoprocessor object. (I had checked it out to my arcpy object in the test script -- and forgot to do the same for my "gp" object.) It's working fine - good to have that legacy support while we move to the brave new world of arcpy -- just in case we need it!

I have an old script that uses MOMA and want to be able to run it at 10.x until I get around to doing it the new, (better) way. I tried import arcpy...
import arcgisscripting
gp = arcgisscripting.create()
gp.MultiOutputMapAlgebra_sa() # error ("<s> not found") and get an error that the tool does not exist. The docs talk about legacy access to MOMA inside model tools, but is there a way to get to SOMA and MOMA in python?

It would be great if regular users (with no privilege access) could change product (ArcInfo Float/ ArcView Float/ ArcView Fixed etc) AND change the license server for concurrent licenses. This information is currently (9.x, 10.0) stored in the registry where only power users and administrators have write access, so you need an administrator do this essentially user experience task.

Thanks for sharing your experience - I think this was a firewall issue. I have tested 9.3.1 client on the same machine as a 10.x license server and it works - just like Billy reports - with Desktop Admin's Availability report saying zero licenses available, without any extensions listed. UPDATE: I learned a fix for this will be included in ArcGIS 9.3.1 SP 2 -- so Desktop Administrator will "see" license availablity on a 10.x license server. Yay! If you're on a 9.3.1 machine, there is a workaround to check availbility, even if the the 9.3.1 client can't talk to the new license server: get a copy of the new 10.x lmutil and run lmutil -a -c @my_arc10_license_server and you get the details: lmutil - Copyright (c) 1989-2008 Acresso Software Inc. The 10.x licenses and license manager will support 9.x Desktop and Workstation software. The 9.x and 10.x license managers cannot be installed on the same machine. Badri, this sounds fantastic, however it is not working for us. (We're using 9.3.1sp1 client, 10.0 PR1 license server). When I use the 9.3.1 license manager and point to the 10.x license serve,r I get this message: The computer you chose is not a valid license server or is running and older version of the License Manager. Are we going to need new 10.x-style 9.x keycodes to do this?

We (like many others I'm sure) would like to serve 9.x AND 10.x licenses for a while. Can they be served from the same license manager, or do we have to run parallel license managers at once using different ports?
