Mr. McGregor: When you download AGX 2500 you get an ArcGISExplorerDownload.exe file. Right-click on this file and use either 7-Zip or WinZip to Extract the files you need to install this application (see attachement). Mark's initial post will make sense after you have unpacked the exe file.

John: Try the new Collector for ArcGIS app (10.2.2). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.esri.arcgis.collector Then, at a browser on a computer, load your zipped shapefile into your My Content area and be sure to make it a Feature Service. Go to the new shapefile feature service details page and enable editing. Open a new map, add your shapefile feature service, choose a map background then save the map. On your Android device, open the Collector App and log into your ArcGIS Online account and find your new map. Edit your points.

Marianne: In AGX 2500, have you tried using the URL with "\rest\" in it? AGX can use REST addresses. http://server.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services Also, have you seen this forum post regarding secure services? http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/92042-Unable-to-add-service-ArcGIS-Explorer-2500?p=327710&viewfull=1#post327710

Russ: Thank you very much for the clarification. My map's Offline Mode was Disabled and I thought that I needed tiled basemaps. I removed a Map Notes layer from my map table-of-contents and my map is now Offline Enabled! Thank you.

I have an ArcGIS Online for Organizations subscription and would like to test using the Collector for ArcGIS 10.2.2 app in a disconnected scenario. I have created a map with a hosted feature service in the TOC, but cannot "Enable??? the Offline Mode in the map properties since I don't have a tiled basemap. Following the Take Maps Offline help topic, I am trying to add the ???tiledbasemaps.arcgis.com/arcgis/rest/services/World_Topo_Map/MapServer??? service to the My Content area in my subscription. I am challenged for a username and password in the process (see attached). I used my AGOL credentials, which are an ???enterprise??? UN and PW, but I get an ???Error generating token??? message. How do I add an ArcGIS tiled basemap service to My Content in AGOL for use in a Collector map?

Mark: Are you trying to add the map service from within a map in AGOL (>Add >Add Layer from Web) or are you adding the map service in your My Content area? Try going to the My Content window and using Add Item to add your map service. I had similar behavior adding secure services. Can't to it within a map, but can do it in the My Content window.

Russ: Thank you for this information. Esri is pushing ArcGIS Online mapping in the cloud, hard. It's a great platform and we have bought in. The capability to leverage our Active Directory Federation Services with AGOL is wonderful. However, it seems that legacy software (ArcMap and ArcGIS Explorer Desktop) and web store apps (Windows/Android/iOS) have not been updated to allow for enterprise login to AGOL. I'm wondering when (or maybe I should ask if) Esri plans to update these software and apps to allow enterprise login to AGOL. Sometime in 2014? It seems like a critical missing piece for communication between AGOL and desktop/mobile applications. Thank you for your time and input.

The last build of the wildly popular ArcGIS Explorer Desktop (AGX) application (build 2500), was released February 12, 2013. Since its release, many users have supplied input to the Forum and technologies have advanced. Just over a year later, we are still wondering when the next build of AGX will be released. Responses to user questions regarding a release timeframe have included: "The next release of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will be 10.2 and the timing of future releases will fall in-line with the ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) releases." "This will be fixed in the next release of ArcGIS Explorer desktop. It is just taking longer to get an update out than we had originally planned." "We are planning to have ArcGIS Explorer desktop ready for release with ArcGIS Next. Q3 at earliest ??" No disrespect to the hard working members of the development teams, but does Esri's AGX team develop under the Agile Method or Waterfall Method? With releases once a year or longer and no intermediate builds with bug fixes, it appears that development is driven by the Waterfall method, which puzzles me. Scott Morehouse, Sud Menon, Jim McKinney and others gave a talk at last year's User Conference and they described Esri's use of the Agile method for development. ArcGIS Online is getting updates every three to four months, which fits with the Agile method. ArcGIS for Desktop and Server get patches and service packs throughout the year between major releases. I think that many of us are wondering why AGX is not following a similar Agile path with updates and releases. Are we tacitly being turned away from AGX desktop and steered toward ArcGIS Online for Organizations? Sincerely,
