I received the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and fired it up. I was unable to use either of two Google accounts to sign into Google Play, Gmail or the Chrome browser on the device. I tried with two factor authentication turned On and Off, App services passwords and many other suggestions found on the internet. I sent the device back. I'm done trying tablets with the Android OS. It should not be this difficult to sign into an account on a tablet and use Apps. When the Windows version of Collector is released, I will try it on a Windows tablet. Thanks to all who provided advice.

Alice: Thank you for the input. I am encouraged by your experience. I, too, purchased the tablet with WiFi-only. Looking for a device that won't break the bank or bum me out when it is broken in the field.

Update My trouble with the Dell Venue 7 may have been this: "It turns out that as shipped, both Venue tablets needed an update to Google Play Services before anything would work correctly. I’ve never seen this before as on ARM tablets as this is part of the ROM image for Android. Apparently that’s not the case with Android for the Atom processor. I had to manually update Play Services, and then discovered that 22 apps on each tablet needed to be updated. These were all the Google apps that make up Android. Once all the updates were installed on each tablet, everything ran fine with one exception I’ll describe later in the review." Source: http://goo.gl/d038Nw I returned the Dell Venue 7 before finding this article. I have since ordered a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.

Hello: I would like to try Collector for ArcGIS on a 7-inch Android tablet. I bought a Dell Venue 7 only to find out that it is not compatible with the Collector App. Does anyone have a suggestion for a 7-inch Android device compatible (ARMv7 or x86 processor) with the Collector for ArcGIS app? This device would be used in the field, so it doesn't need to be super high-end, shiny and expensive. Thank you in advance. Joe

Zachary: Neither Bing Maps, Esri's ArcGIS Onine maps, nor Google maps can be "downloaded" and stored on your server to be shared with others. These are all streaming services. Esri's gallery of background maps can be used directly for free in ArcMap, ArcGIs Explorer Desktop and ArcGIS Online. Bing maps are available for use in ArcGIS applications (see link, below) by obtaining a Bing Maps Key from Microsoft and then applying that key to the software or services of your choice. http://downloads2.esri.com/ArcGISOnline/docs/bing_faq1.pdf

Stan: Fantastic widget! Can this widget be used in the ArcGIS Online version of WAB? I'm guessing not. Thank you, Joe

Try lower-case "arcgis" in the URL. Like this: http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services

No, I guess it doesn't matter. Are your ArcGIS feature services loaded into your map via the Add button from the table of contents or added into the My Content space first then into your map? Just a thought.

Ann: Server-side: At 10.2.2 one is able to enable "Sync" in the map service at >Feature Access >Operations Allowed. Could that be your issue? Are you using ArcGIS for Server 10.2.2 or 10.3? I found this helpful, also: http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/publish-services/windows/prepare-data-for-offline-use.htm

Mark: This is a fantastic response to my questions and I thank you so much for sharing this information with me and the user community. Communications such as this and your response above are what we look forward to as we plan for our own “road ahead” with new releases of the wonderful products that you and others work on to make our lives more productive and our jobs more exciting. We have built quite an ecosystem around Esri products and ArcGIS Explorer for Desktop is an important part of its success. I have enjoyed working with you and other engineers at Esri. I always look forward to meeting you in person at the UC and talking shop. I understand your commitment and Esri’s commitment to users and their needs and that is what gives me reason to hold you and Esri in such high esteem. I appreciate all the hard work that you do and cannot fathom all the technological hurdles you must climb to make the products work well with all the other moving parts coming from other corners of Esri and all of the platforms to consider. Thank you for your time and information regarding the future of ArcGIS Explorer for Desktop. See you at the UC. Sincerely, Joe

Mark: Thank you for the thorough response. If I may speak for the AGX user community – We look forward to March/April and the release of a new build of AGX. You mention that the March/April version of AGX “…is a continuation of the AGX that you know”. Question 1: What was that AGX-like Windows 7 desktop application (ArcGIS Viewer?) that I saw in “beta” at last year’s UC? Is that a modern AGX replacement that dovetails better with Windows 8/10, ArcGIS 10.3.x and ArcGIS Online? Is it the new build of AGX that you speak of? Is it real? Question 2: What do you mean when you say regarding the next build of AGX “…it will still lag behind ArcGIS online, particularly webmap support.”? Mark, the other applications that I mentioned above (ArcGIS Pro, Desktop, Server, Online, etc.), are being used by some staff when the need reaches that level. We try to “Right-size” the tools that we deliver to staff to meet their needs. We typically walk up the stack of AGX, AGOL and ArcView. We have nearly 200 staff total, nine (9) of which are full-time GIS staff using ArcGIS Desktop Advanced. We have invested in ArcGIS for Server Advanced and use it extensively. We have purchased a Level 3 subscription to ArcGIS Online. We have Explorer and Collector apps on iPads and smartphones. We’re “All In” with Esri products and we love them and couldn’t do business without them. AGX Desktop is a wonderful, easy to use, easy to deploy tool for users to consume, display and query map services and other geospatial data in order to get their jobs done. When I walk around our office I see AGX open on many staff desktops. All I’m asking for is that Esri please work on keeping AGX current with the rest of the ArcGIS technologies and make some major bug fixes more frequently. I see where AGOL is going in the big scheme of things at Esri and I like it and I pay for it. But, in a lot of cases, AGX is all many of my users need. AGX has been left in the dust while other Esri technologies have cycled through multiple updates/upgrades. Please don’t leave the AGX community so far behind the rest of the Esri technology world. Some of us depend heavily on that tough, often overlooked software application. Thank you for listening and responding.
