We're doing a deep dive on VHD setting (M$ Hyper-V) for tuning ArcGIS Server performance, and wondering if anyone has experience/insight on this. With the out of the box VHD settings in Hyper-V, we're seeing horrible performance with disk throughput, and I'm not even yet into GIS Server load testing. To the question: For a standard GIS Enterprise deployment, let's assume an equal traffic load of people publishing services and consuming them; A hosting server and a data store; a "few" federated servers; a dedicated tile server What disk settings are working best for you? We suspect setting block size at the OS level might yield the best results. We don't have a lot (any) control over the SAN hardware: What the vendor sold us is what we're using, and we've exhausted vendor support (what they did resulted in some performance increase but not enough). Nor do we have the luxury of moving VM's to underutilized hyper-v hosts, as utilization changes constantly. I recall an ESRI white paper on this but can't find it.

Would Multiple-machine deployment with ArcGIS Web Adaptor—ArcGIS Server (Windows) Installation Guide | ArcGIS Enterprise allow for bringing one machine in the site down for an upgrade?

In Arcmap, as part of the publishing process, you can add a dymanic workspace : In Pro, no such feature. Having to go into the service definition after publishing, which is many extra steps, is not a solution or a workaround.

When publishing a service to an unfederated server with ArcMap, you get something like; Or With Pro, at least you get the project is was published from, but not the map within the project. I manage a team of folks publishing stuff to many servers, and often, the only way I can find the publishing source is to go into the service description and find the path and name of the mxd. It looks like I'm unable to do this with Pro. As I look to migrate several hundred services to a new server farm, I'm not comfortable republishing everything from Pro if I can't get to the exact publishing source. Example: I open the .aprx shown above, and it has 15 different maps related to special use permits. Which one was used to publish the service?

Funny you mention that Paul Hoeffler! We're determined not to allow "rogue publishing" to the hosting server, and are now testing a custom role with unchecked "Publish server-based layers". unchecked, and making that the default role. In testing, I am able to do everything a publisher would expect to do in PTL (publish hosted services), but with that role, I cannot register a datastore, nor can I fire hose the hosting server with services.

David, it would be helpful if you could get a case going as well. There are very data/environment specific issues that TS will collect with SDE Intercept and SQL Trace that will inform development specifically where performance issues are, and as you can tell, Pro is getting a lot of shade thrown on it for performance issues. I don't quite have a reproducible case as you two do. Reference this thread with TS, it will help them know what troublshooting has already been done. Same for SDEIntercept, it is best that TS walks you though how to set it up, I only look at how fast the trace files are being generated, only ESRI can interpret the file contents.

Where are you publishing the service? PTL, AGOL, GIS Server? What is the source data? SDE, FGDB? Are you publishing a map or a feature service?

Can you provide more detailed steps to reproduce? What tool(s) exactly are you using to create the graphic? I'm dropping lines and polygons in a layout and not seeing that behavior, which suggests there is something specific to your video card that may be causing this. Is your video driver up to date?
