With the following set up: MS SQL 2008 R2 A versioned feature class Windows ACL Group "Users" mapped to DBO and full control of all tables Users in "Users" can access and adit the FC through Arc Map SQL Geodatabase successfully registered and validated in the data store Arc GIS Server Windows Domain User Store Windows Domain Role Store Authentication Tier = Web Authentication Mode = Web The "Users" group has been granted access through web-based ArcGIS Server Manager to: A map service a Geodata service IIS Anon Authentication Disabled Windows Authentication Enabled A folder called "Folder" to which the "Users" group has been granted access This setup has worked well for non-SQL-backed map and geodata services. Here's the problem: I create a simple flexviewer app (3.2) with the feature service, using http://localhost/arcgis/rest/services/CRGIS_EDIT/ In the "Preview" tab I can successfully view and edit the data, everything works peachy config.xml reflects "localhost", so in order to see the app from another computer, I edit config.xml to read http://[FQDN]/arcgis/rest/services/CRGIS_EDIT/FeatureServer/0 Which returns the following error: Architectural Survey Line layer failed to load: Fault code: Channel.Security.Error
Fault info: Security error accessing url
Fault details: Destination: DefaultHTTP
Research suggests I should be using Crossdomain.xml, which I've copied to just about every single folder there is, same problem. When using http://[FQDN]/arcgis/rest/services/CRGIS_EDIT/ to define the operational layer in the Flexviewer builder, using the ArcGIS admin account or my windows account will allow access to the service. I can view http://[FQDN]/arcgis/rest/services from any browser, any computer, no problem. Clearly I'm missing something obvious here, what is it? We cannot use local security per organizational policy, it's Windows AD or nothing. Thanks!

I have the same problem: relating any tables on fields using GUID's, is not visible to ArcGIS server. Shows up in the REST directory with a relationship ID, but cannot query across the relationship. Kinda wish ESRI would have included this restriction in the help documentation. Adding objectID's to these tables is not an option or a workaround.

Thanks Robert! Tried that, set it to 0, same result, change relationship cardinality to 1:N, republished everything, same result....

I have a feature Layer: RoadCenterline_Ground_and_Above_1K (ID: 10) and a related table Layer: Route_ID (ID: 148). Within a file geodabase a1:1 relationship exists between the two using the ROUTE_IDENT field, and inspecting the relationship works flawlessly in ArcMap. Standing up <url>http://grsmgis.nps.gov/arcgis/rest/services/Base/Base/MapServer/10</url> using a Flex Viewer also works fine. As soon as I add <relates>
<relate id="148" label="Route_ID" enableexport="true" enableprintgrid="true"
icon="assets/images/i_flag.png" printtitle="Routes">
<fields all="false">
<field name="ROUTE_IDENT" />
<field name="RTE_NAME" />
</fields>
</relate>
</relates>
the search results indicate related records but the related record datagrid does not populate, nor does clicking on the related record icon return anything. Yes, I have confirmed that there is indeed a related record for each feature. This is on Arc GIS Server 10.1, SP1, Flex 3.1.

The only way to do this is with xquery (xml-sql query), as field alias' live inside sde_items (or something similar). Your xquery would have to find the right xml node and update. Hard, but doable, and worth it only if you have to do millions of FC's. by the time you're done writing the xquery syntax, you would have been long done doing it through arc cat.

Can your force a hint on the spatial index within the query? I forget the exact commands, but there are some tools out there to investigate SQL Spatial queries, which, in SQL 2008, have HORRIBLE performance because of lack of honoring spatial indexes in some scenarios. Are you able to see the query execution plan in management studio?

I'm sure someone has figured this out....how can I depict one-way travel direction indicators as a symbol (inside a cased street symbol, for example)? This is in 10.1, with geodatabase data providing road centerlines, with a one-way (from-to, to-from, unknown) attribute. In addition, we are also using route shields and road names.

Mark, this is incredibly frustrating. IT won't roll out 1750 knowing that a new release is due out, but you keep announcing delays of a new release. Meanwhile we have a non-ArcMap user base (large) that is increasingly dependent on access to basic GIS data. We're not in an ESRI testing lab, we have computers with very restrictive hardware and software bottlenecks due to corporate policies, T1 connections that are firewalled down to 128K, so all the "Bling" web services, ArcGIS online, and 3D "extras" really aren't in high demand. Explorer desktop is a great tool for us to deliver enterprise GIS products to lower-tier GIS consumers. I suspect that many posters in this thread share the same issues. Like a previous poster, all we want to do is push out feature classes and shapefiles so people can do their jobs. They're not going to sit in their (service/patrol) vehicle and wait 2 hours for 1m resolution air photo to load in 3D over a broadband connection. They're just not interested in that. Is there a threshold at which all the extra speed and features, which are really used by a small portion of Explorer users, can be shelved to a new release and the rest of us can move forward with our (ESRI-Based) GIS architecture build-outs?

SQL transaction logs are automatically truncated with a full backup. Doing a tlog-only back up means you're doing a differential backup. Pros and cons to that: with differential, your backup media storage is cheaper, as well as backup time, but recovery in case of a failure is horrific in terms of complexity. A daily full backup suits most SDE installations, as well a pulling a full before significant data changes. Ask you're whomever is maintaining your SQL to pull a full back up in either case, and see if that error goes away.

What Database are you using? I'm assuming SQL, you should specify that when posting to the SDE forum. Usually taking a FULL (not differential) backup will clear that, as well as rebuilding/reorganizing any indexes on FC's that have seen heavy edits. Finally, you might want to consider moving the log file to another disk array.

adding my voice to the masses as well. However, on the hypocritical flip-side, the more we push for an on-time release, the more liklihood of there being show-stopping bugs, which is usually the case with a major version release of ESRI products. It will be real disappointing to raise all this fuss just to find that it only runs on quad-core dual processor machines with 4GB video cards (the reason why we can't deploy 1750 is because of serious hardware incompatabilities).

I suppose there's a really easy answer to this, I just can't find it! I have a 3D line FC with Z values, for which I need to derive the midpoint using 3D length. This is in very, very mountainous terrain, and the 3d length is substantially different from the 2 length. I tried adding a X and Y midpoint field, to later convert to a point FC, but that is only using 2d values. The split tool in the Arc Scene Editor Toolbar also (surprisingly) splits on 2D length, not 3D, as verified by determining 3D and 2D segement lengths after the split (2D was the same for each line half, 3D substantially different for each line half). Wishfully hoping there's a tool or script that does this, but a method of calculating 3D mid x and y will get me what I need. THanks!
