i ran the crash dump through our analyzer. Caveat--I'm not a developer so could easily miss something important. There's no obvious fault, and in fact is pretty bare-bones as a crash dump goes. The only thing I see is that the last instruction includes "NauticalDesktop". Do you have any extensions/apps installed? Maybe try uninstalling them one by one and see if you can stabilize your main ArcGIS installation. Melita

I would hope so, but we have been going back-and-forth internally about when unit conversions should be done outside of actual transformations. I think we turned them off for vertical data because it was causing another problem elsewhere.

The first transformation converted from grads to degrees, even though the geographic/datum transformation wasn't set. On the next reprojection, did you mean to use point1 or point3? Point1 doesn't have an input VCS, so there's no way to change the units. Melita

If I understand correctly, sure. Try using azimuthal equidistant and customize it so the center point is the center of the crater.

Any type of reprojection is going to mean resampling the cell values so there will some changes. What kind of analysis do you want to do with the data? Or is it more for visual effect? For equal areas, equal earth or Eckert IV. For a compromise (not fully equal area or conformal), Robinson or Winkel Tripel. I don't know if you've already visited it, but check out PIGWAD (I think the name has changed), which may have some suggestions or data products. Melita

The big question is whether they used the other UTM parameters, in particular the scale factor = 0.9996 or instead used parameters like those in the South Africa Lo system, which was every 3 degrees. The scale factor is 1.0, and the false easting/northing values were zeroes. If it looks like the false easting/northing values match a South UTM zone (false easting = 500km; false northing = 10000km), use the UTM 35S. Melita

Partially the software is inconsistent because there are multiple teams who are responsible for the various parts. Some teams are able to incorporate new functionality faster. It'll also depend on which version you're using. For instance, the Add Geometry Attributes tool does support geodetic/geodesic-based lengths and areas. Melita

It is probably EPSG:21781, CH1903 / LV03. The coordinates you posted are southwest of Geneva. There are 2 other possible Swiss projected coordinate systems--but those coordinates don't fall within the country if you use either of the other projected coordinate systems. Melita

Hi Mitch, There isn't an easy solution. You have to take into account the data accuracy, currency (how recent is the data), and so on. Current "WGS84" data (really ITRFxx, unless you're military) is about 1 m offset from the various NAD83 realizations. Can you match the WGS84 data against the HARN data with the 2 transformations? Which one fits better? Melita

Yes, one of those transformations should have come up. One possibility is that the CSRS definition doesn't match Esri's close enough and we're not recognizing it. If you look at the layer properties, and see a WKID of 0, that's would confirm it. Another possibility is that there's an issue with the data extent. That it falls outside of the valid area of the transformations. Can you post a sample coordinate pair for the data? Or if you add it to ArcMap / map in Pro does it line up correctly against a base map? I'm leaning towards this second option because just missing/not applying a transformation shouldn't cause the data to display wildly off. Melita

Hi Kaitlyn, The data's using feet (international), and it's very close to a State Plane North Dakota South zone like 2266 (NAD 1983) which uses NAD 1983. It may be on a latter realization of NAD83 like HARN or 2011. There may be something else that has modified the state plane zone, because particularly on the west side, the city boundary is offset versus the airport so there could be a rotation applied. As Eric stated, it's best to go back to the data provider and ask about the coordinate system and whether any combined scale factor or grid-to-ground adjustment or rotation/north angle was applied. I don't know but I know US surveyors seem to divide between lat-lon, a local system, or state plane. Control networks are likely to report latitude-longitude plus ellipsoidal or geoidal/gravity-related heights and/or 3D Cartesian (XYZ or ECEF - earth-centered-earth-fixed). GNSS natively reports lat-lon-h (or maybe XYZ), not projected coordinates. Melita

Hi Kaitlyn, The coordinates look like they're in a state plane system, but I've tried NAD27 Montana North, Central, and South plus NAD83 in meters and feet and none obvious match the data. Can you tell which city it is? You can email if you want, mkennedy at esri dot com. Melita

Sorry, Neil Ayres you can go from an unknown to a known. If you have known points or can acquire known points in both systems, you can take a look at georeferencing the DGN files to a 'known' coordinate system. Another possibility is trying to determine a custom coordinate system based on Local or RSO (rectified skew orthomorphic) but that's a lot of repetitive work to fine down the parameter values. Can you post any sample coordinate values where you do have info in 2 systems or a location (like an address) for a local coordinate pair? If you send me an email, I can send you a document that discusses local/CAD data and how to find or define its coordinate system. Melita
