Layer packages are primarily used for packaging up data, thus, it's not typically used to reference services because they don't have data in them. My suggestion to create a layer package with just one shapefile was to validate that the process does work by removing other variables that could be causing the process to fail. So are you able to upload that layer package with one shapefile up to arcgis.com and then download it again successfully? What other types of layers were you trying to include in your layer package? Perhaps you can tell me what your end goal is. Are you just trying to put downloadable data on your website? Mike

No, there is no public roadmap for these products. Probably the best way to give feedback to us is through this forum or the new ideas site, http://ideas.arcgis.com/ideaList?category=ArcGIS+Online With the ideas site, other people can vote on suggestions, so it may be a better place to rally support for your ideas. However, if you post some of your ideas here, I can give you feedback on them, where I can. Thanks, Mike

You are correct that ArcGIS.com doesn't really support the workflow you describe. There is only one map author and only he/she can edit the map. Here's an idea you could try... The different people in your group could create their own version of the map by doing a "Save as" then sharing the new version back with the group. As long as people created versions sequentially, all the edits could end up in one map. Not the ideal solution, but it could achieve your end goal. Thanks, Mike

Michael, Perhaps you can try packaging up one layer based on one shapefile into a layer package instead of many. I was also a little confused by the inclusion of ArcIMS layers. As these layers are already services you don't really need to package them up. Creating layer packages is more about moving your data to the server. Another idea would be to try to do this work from another machine. Maybe there is a problem with the machine you are using. If none of these help, I'd suggest calling ESRI technical support. Thanks, Mike

So you are trying to add a reference to an ArcGIS Server map service? And it works in Chrome but not FF or IE7. Very strange. I don't know what could be happening here. What is the URL to the map service you are trying to add? Is it a public service that I can access? Thanks, Mike

Currently, there is no way to dynamically make a map service out of a map or layer that you upload to ArcGIS.com. We are, however, currently working on the ability to "web enable" layer packages. This will likely be a premium (for fee) feature. Thanks, Mike

Hi Alan, You might want to try posting your question to the Geoprocessing forum. You'll likely get a better response than you will from this forum, which mainly deals with questions about accessing and sharing resources online. Thanks, Mike

We are looking into this issue. It appears to be specific to one machine. If anyone else is having similar problems and had a previous beta version of ArcGIS 10 installed on their system, the first thing to try is to go to another machine if possible, and see if you can sign on on that machine. If so, then it's the particular machine that is the problem. If you have previously installed ArcGIS Desktop beta versions and modified any registry settings, you'll need to clean those up. Open the registry and delete this folder: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\ArcGIS Online THanks, Mike

Patrick, While you can upload an MXD to ArcGIS.com, you need to remember that the MXD doesn't store any data, but rather references data. So, if the person you want to download your MXD has access to the same data (e.g., they work with you and have access to local directories), they will be able to access the MXD from ArcGIS.com, download it and open it. However, if the person doesn't have access to your local data, then you need to include the data with your upload. At 9.3.1, you can upload a layer with it's associated data, creating what's called a layer package. To do this, right-click the layer in ArcMap's TOC and click Create layer package. Remember that the data will get packaged up inside the layer package, so if it's a large data source, the layer package (.lpk) file will be large too. Once you upload your layer package, you'll need to share it within ArcGIS.com so others can access it. You can share it with everyone (make it public) or share it with other members in a group. (Note: make sure you change the setting on the website at the top of the page to "Show:All Content." ArcGIS 10 has the ability to create Map Packages that package up an entire map. One last point... Layer packages are not viewable on the web, for example, display over the ArcGIS.com map. For this, you need to reference a map service. To learn more, search the ArcGIS Desktop help for "layer package" Hope this helps, Mike

Michael, It would be good to get a baseline of what works. Perhaps you can try creating a layer package from a simple (small) data source and see if that works. It seems like the problem is with Desktop being able to create the layer package at all. If Desktop can't create a valid layer package, then the upload/download from ArcGIS.com won't make any difference. Once uploaded, if you plan to share with a group, make sure you have the setting at the top of the application set to "Show: All Content" otherwise it will appear that the layer package is not getting shared with the group. Thanks, Mike

The way to upload any data is to create layer package. To create a layer package, right-click the layer in the TOC of ArcMap, then choose Create layer package. This will allow you to create a file (.lpk extension) that you can then upload to "My Content." Just browse for the .lpk file. Mike

There isn't a way to store items you don't own in "My Content", nor add them to your groups. The only way I can think of now is to store it as a bookmark or favorite in your browser, since each item has a unique URL. We have considered adding user "favorites" to ArcGIS.com, which would address what you're trying to do. But we currently don't have any short term plans to implement this feature. Thanks, Mike

Hi Michael, From our side, it looks like your upload got interrupted for some reason (maybe your internet connection was lost?). I've tried to reproduce your problem here by disconnecting my computer from the web, but have not seen any error message. Please let us know if you see this problem again. Thanks, Mike
