Here's what you can do without doing any programming... When looking at the map in ArcGIS.com, click Share on the menu bar. This allows you to do two things that may work. One, you can choose to embed the map in your own web page. However, there is no ability to turn layers on or off when embedded in this fashion. Two, you can make a web application that you deploy to your own web site. There are several templates to choose from, some that let you turn on/off layers. Here's what you can do with some programming. You can modify the template you downloaded in option 2 above, and edit the application (all files are included) to do exactly what you want. The templates are build (primarily) with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. We also have ArcGIS API for Flex and the ArcGIS API for Silverlight. All of the APIs (I believe) can read in a map you create in ArcGIS.com. You then can write your application from scratch, but leverage the map authoring abilities in ArcGIS.com Hope this helps, Mike

Just open your web map in ArcGIS Explorer Online to add text over the map (Explorer Online currently supports this, but no the map viewer in ArcGIS.com; we're working on it.) I don't know about whether you can add text over the image with photoshop; hopefully Sarah will reply. Thanks, Mike

the ArcGIS.com map viewer is not able to measure area...yet. It's something we're planning on including in the future. However, you can do this with ArcGIS Explorer online using the measure tool. http://explorer.arcgis.com. Thanks, Mike

Yes that is the rumor... It is on our list of things to do. As to when it will be released, I can't give you an exact date. We have a long list of enhancements and things tend to get shuffled around. But it is currently on the list for the next big release... Thanks, Mike

it is possible to add text labels, but you can only add them as map notes in Explorer Online. The ArcGIS.com map viewer doesn't support these labels perfectly yet, there are some issues. You can't add text labels in the map viewer The text doesn't always look exactly the same as it does in Explorer Online The positioning of the text is off, it gets shifted. Hope this helps, Mike

You are correct. ArcGIS.com will not be able to make maps with your WMS services. Thanks, Mike

Ben, I think your best course of action is to contact Esri Technical Support. I don't think we can troubleshoot this effectively in the forums. Thanks, Mike

Tim, You have to host a feature service on your GIS server in order for everyone to be able to edit the features. Map Notes do not support this type of editing. Thanks, Mike

It sounds like your GIS server may be behind a firewall. While at work, since you are inside the firewall, some operations will work, but others require external access by our servers. However, the URL you entered would work in arcgis.com, but typically if you type the URL in a web browser, you need to include the "rest" part, like this: http://myserver.com/arcgis/rest/services So try the above from an external machine. This is strange. Can you share the URL your map so we can try it out? If you don't want to share it publicly on this forum, perhaps you can create a group in arcgis.com and you can invite me to be a member of so I can see it. Thanks, Mike

On your GIS server, you have a folder named "2011". You need to rename this so the name begins with a letter. For example rename it to "Year 2011", "a2011" or anything that begins with a letter. Thanks, Mike

Looks like you should contact technical support. What they will probably need is the exact time you are noticing problems and with what service so we can cross check it with the log files on our server... Thanks, Mike

If you have your own ArcGIS Server, there is a way to publish mobile maps to it that can be consumed in the iOS app. These maps can have secured services in them. Here is a link to a document: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgismobile/10.0/apis/iphone/AppGuide/Maps.pdf These maps are not hosted in arcgis.com but rather on your own GIS server. I don't know, however, to what extent editing of features is supported. Maybe it just works...maybe someone else who reads this forum can comment... Hope this helps, Mike
