Layer files don't contain any data, so they often can't be drawn in arcmap, unless you have access to the source data the lyr references. So if you work at the same organization as someone sharing the lyr file and the source of the lyr is a geodatabase that you can see, the layer will draw. However, if you don't have access to the source, it will appear as a broken layer. If the source data of the lyr file is a map service, then it should display fine. Since you are trying to display world imagery, am I correct in assuming that you want to find basemap layers? Here's a link to the basemap layers that Esri provides. http://links.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/en/arcmap931/layers Hope this helps, Mike

It is quite cumbersome isn't it. I'll write up an enhancement request and we'll see what we can do. By the way, you can just type in the current date too...that's much easier than clicking through the calendar. Thanks for the input, Mike

Are you saying you've added the world transportation service as a layer in your MXD in ArcMap, then you serve that MXD up using ArcGIS Server? If this is the case, it's better to keep your operational layers separate from the basemap and use the client application to combine the layers. Basically take out the basemap from the MXD. If this is not the case, perhaps you can explain more on what you're trying to do. Thanks, Mike

Is the data you're trying to add a public item? Can you share a link to it? What type of item is it? Thanks, Mike

I see where I went wrong initially... I missed that you are running OSX 10.6.7... I was trying on my PC and everything was working fine... We can reproduce the problem... Thanks, Mike

It isn't bound to this server and we do have a JavaScript API you can use independently. It might be interesting to actually animate movement, like shown on this map. http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=dfa1e187310c4c7a897e4c919dd3f781 Here's a general link to our JavaScript API reference http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/ Here is a reference to a specific sample that shows the coding pattern, although this sample is meant for a mobile device. http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jssamples/mobile_geolocaterenderer.html Hope this helps, Mike

ArcGIS.com can't edit features on an internal server currently. It's a browser limitation. Thanks, Mike

In the ArcGIS.com map viewer, you click the feature once to see the resize handles, then you click the feature again to see the vertices. Now, right click on any vertex to delete it. This works in all browsers, except IE9 right now. I just tried IE7, Safari, Firefox, Chrome and they all work In Explorer Online, I think you've found a bug. You should be able to hover over a vertex and click the Delete key on your keyboard to delete it. For me, however, it deletes the whole feature, not just the vertex. I'll report this. Thanks, Mike

Enabling popups is exposed on the sub-layers of a service layer. So you need to expand the layer by clicking on it to expose the sub-layers. The popup options are on the context menu of the sub-layers. Popups are not supported on image service layers. If you don't see the popup options it may be that the "shape" field of the service layer is hidden. You can check on the service layer by clicking on the Description option in the context menu for a sub-layer. You should see a page like this: http://atlas.resources.ca.gov/ArcGIS/rest/services/GeoScience/California_Fire_History/MapServer/1 Look at the Fields section to see if Shape field is visible. If it isn't then you can't enable popups. However, if you control the service itself, you can enable the shape field and refresh the service. Thanks, Mike

Can you provide a little more information on what application you are using? Are you using the ArcGIS.com map viewer, ArcGIS Explorer Online? Are you editing a feature you've added to the map or a feature service? Thanks, Mike

I'm guessing you need to click on the layer to expand it to reveal the sub-layers. So keep clicking on the layer names until you get a context menu with the enable popups option. Thanks, Mike

The web map supports popups. You can make a very short popup by defining it explicitly, then it would sort of resemble a map tip in arcmap. Thanks, Mike
