While both applications are very similar, they are still evolving and more functionality will be added over time. ArcGIS Explorer Online is meant to be more of a data exploration and viewing tool. For example, there is a new feature called Dashboard that allows you to compare the attributes of different features on the map and graph them. Explorer Online also introduced Presentations, and it's still the app you use to author them, but people asked to be able to display these from the ArcGIS.com map viewer too, so we added support for them. Explorer Online also requires the Microsoft Silverlight plugin in order to run. This can be a stumbling block for some people. Explorer Online is map focused. It doesn't allow you to manage other kinds of items you upload to ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS.com has a lot more tools for managing your content. You can upload different types of data, such as packages, and desktop files like MXDs and LYRs. In reality, these are just two of the client applications that can connect to ArcGIS Online. We also have an iPhone application, Android application, ArcGIS Desktop, and have a few different APIs that allow you to develop your own applications that use content in ArcGIS Online. Hope this helps, Mike

We don't display the data in our contents tab. You can click on a feature on the map to see it's attribute values. There are two issues that will be fixed with an upcoming update to ArcGIS.com. The first is that the color of the polygons should be blue, as defined in the KML. Also, the popup display is quite slow, so be patient. ArcGIS.com symbolizes the KML exactly the way it is authored. When you author your kml, if you change the color of individual polygons, that should show up. Thanks, Mike

Yes, the security is the problem. ArcGIS.com map viewer doesn't currently support accessing secured services. Thanks, Mike

What application are you using to view this? It looks like it may be a caching problem. If you are using a web browser, try clearing your web browser cache. If you are in ArcMap, try clearing the tile cache on layer properties. Mike

This error will be fixed in the next update to the website. If you need to access the map template, here's an updated version with the fix to the legend. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=c456062635b2417192c0e2b4be9d1705 Thanks, Mike

There is an error in the Chrome Two Panel Template. We'll need to fix that. I assume Explorer Online has a similar issue. I'll let them know. Thanks, Mike

No, unfortunately it can't. If you're a developer, you could write your own application using the JavaScript API... http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/ Thanks, Mike

No, none of these settings are configurable. Since web maps open across different client applications and don't really have client specific settings stored in the web map, we could probably expose some settings on the arcgis.com application (maybe as part of your profile) so that whenever you open a map, it opens with the TOC and overview map showing. However, this setting would be associated with your profile for arcgis.com. If someone else were to open the map, the map would open according to their settings. Would this satisfy your needs? Thanks, Mike

Well, from the arcgis.com map viewer we don't show map notes in the legend. We viewed map notes as annotation, not necessarily real features. Like you might draw an arrow to point at something and you really wouldn't want to show that arrow in the legend. If you choose one of the other layer types when creating features, these will show up in the legend. However, as Rupert points out below, Explorer Online has a layer property that allows you to turn on the legend for the map notes layer. This option is not exposed in the arcgis.com map viewer (an inconsistency we should address). Mike
